I saw Sarah give a reading at the Astor Place Barnes & Noble in NYC in 2003. Afterward, she was signing copies of "Partly Cloudy Patriot," which had just been released.

I didn't have enough money to buy it, so I got a copy of "Radio On" and asked her to sign it. She looked at me like I was an idiot. Sorry, Sarah. :-(

Yeah...I'm a HUGE Sarah Vowell fan, but she isn't joking when she says she's not good with people. I had a similar experience at a reading in Troy, NY. A friend of mine had previously met her at a radio function and thought she was a total bitch (her words, not mine).
