When I heard it played fast it sounded so cool and metal as fuck, and then when he played it slow it sounded so beautiful soothing like something I would fall asleep to.
I'm waiting for the day when guitar acrobatics will be part of the competitions in the Olympic games. The guy IS a monster player and though it's not necessarily the player I'd want to be, kudos most definitely go out to Glenn for his mastery and dedication to the instrument.
Dexterity 100%, skill 100%, musical knowlege 100%, hours of practice countless, but is that enjoyable for the listener? Playing complex scales and arpeggios is an awesome way to diplay your talent, but is it music? I know how ghard it it to play that fast and that cleanly, but you know, I think I'll stick with the stuff that's "easy" to play, like ACDC. Angus may only know 3 chords and a few scales, but the end product is much more satisfying and enjoyable. High speed in not.
When I see something like this I am absolutely amazed at the ability and dexterity of some guitarists and yet...
I know I`ll piss a lot of people off by saying this but ultimately what are we witnessing? The result of endless hours of practice but I always end up thinking, where is the music? Where is the feeling? Who benefits most? The performer or the listener?
@PhilipPorter Hence, why it's a "Betcha Can't Play This" segment and not a song in the normal sense. These sorts of segments are no different from etudes or scale exercises on any other instrument. The point of these is for technical facility, not necessarily for harmonic quality. Glenn writes actual compositions too!
@PhilipPorter guess you are jealous about some guitarists abilities not YET acquired by yourself. Trust me, you will play like these guys one day and you will feel everything about. Betcha Can't Play This is just a technique challenge for players. It has nothing do to with music - but, in music, I am sure that we have to have the most perfect technique that we can have, so that we can drop our feelings inside this mechanical and mathematical way of thinking about something that's purely emotion
@PhilipPorter well, i love making music for people to listen to, but ultimately, it needs to please me the most. so if i want to play something "shredy" like this, i dont really care if it benefits the listener, as long as benefits me first. im the one who's playing to begin with. still im pretty sure you can use stuff like this in a musical, interesting way
Like that HEADBANGER guy below is saying too. The speed, accuracy, and how cleanly he pulls it off is very impressive. As far as that goes, he blows a guy like Hendrix out of the water. But you know why Hendrix is considered a Guitar God and Glenn is not? The music. It touches you on a personnel level. It grabs you and pulls you in. If Glenn would focus more on the melodic aspect and not the "shred" aspect, he will attain greatness. He has all the physical gifts to be a all time great.
@PhilipPorter .....I like the way that you worded your comment. I always end up hurting someone's feelings (ego) when I make comments similar to yours. I commend this dude for what he has accomplished and I'll categorize this video as an "exercise". Big ups to you and Mr Proudfoot.
@PhilipPorter remember that music, apart from being an art form, has always been used fot entertainment, and to bring joy, amazement, and good feelings, whatever emotion you want, playing a blues with feeling and tasty phrasing (which is a whole ohter topic, intention, blabla and it´s awesome too, of course) is not the only thing in the world as many guitarist think, coolness in music, is great too. Listen to Tommy Emmanuel and you can see a mix of an incredible guitarist and super showmanship
@PhilipPorter well he did not perform this just to solely please you, didnt he? its not his, or our problem as musicians for that matter, if you or someone else may benefit something from what we do or not. we just somehow enjoy what we are doing. I could so say because i was able to pull off what he just did, and was able to made some improvisations and figured out ideas that branched out of it. you sir is just a frustrated bitch, who doesnt have the balls for dedications.
@PhilipPorter Isn't that the idea? Look at the name of the video. He's playing something technically advanced that most people can't play. He's not trying to play musically. Look up his song "Evangel" on youtube and think again.
@guitarplayer10120 its not a strat its a "frankenstein" guitar comprised of a fender maple neck, a sheerwood body and fender pots also a floyd rose with locking nut
jesus...........talk about pentatonic arpegios

But, your Evangel song is sick, love it.

@PhilipPorter you obviously don't understand music well then .. !! one should admire both technique n music ..
n to me .. this shit was obviously GREAT !!!

@PhilipPorter Life is complicated enough without complicating music as well.
The video pretty much IS a circus act. That is the idea of the whole 'betcha can't play this'.
Enjoy it for what it is, not for what it isn't.

@gingersteve but what is it... thats the point. blues, rock, r&b... make people emote... this just makes me think of a broken fax machine.
matthewrotherham 6 months ago
@matthewrotherham It's a display of skill. That's the idea of a Betcha Can't Play This.
Maybe some people emote to this, and you just don't. Just like some people like certain foods.
If it means nothing to you, then don't worry about it.
