From memory Quakeworld was released very late 1996. Around March/April 1997 it started becoming very popular though in America the netQuake (or normal quake) scene survived on and split the American scene down the middle between QW'ers an NQ'ers. The Europeans came to quake a littler later than the Americans (guys like Thresh were playing quake from the beginning on T1/T3 + connections)

LOL ql, shit, inelegant, newbified air control; over balanced, nerfed weapons (tacticless aimfest ensues); weapon switch delays; footstep sounds; boring weak knockback physics. Two criteria for a popular game: Shiny eye candy grpahics, mediocre anyone can get a kill gameplay.

It's the original Quakeworld that was done by (iD software) to make the original Quake better for online play. It's the game that made online gaming a worldwide popular hobby. All subsequent FPS games are based on it, and it is unsurpassed in terms of gameplay and skill required to master it. Since (iD software) released the source code for it, there have been numerous Open source QW clients offering modern features, and graphics, and bug fixes, ... (character limit reply continues)

It's my first time playing QW/nQuake, and it was great, no wonder it's the granddaddy of deathmatch...

nice programming on the bots too, they were very challenging and very good opponents
