This is the era that got me into motocross. Used 79 YZ125. I always wanted an open face helmet like my hero Bailey but my dad wouldn't have anything to do with it. Thanks dad for making me wear the full face.
@eplatel0704 RJ won the Tokyo Supercross in '82 on board a production '83 YZ250K with Glover finishing second. It was a reverse of how they finished at the San Diego Supercross also on production '83 YZ's.
I remember seeing Smith in a JT ad with the #14 on his plate, on a Honda, in a stadium event. He was supposed to race the 125 class that year on a Honda against Hannah, Barnett, etc. For some reason, that never happened. He turned up at some point on a Cagiva in 1982 & that lasted about one or two weekends.
Actually, Glover was on a "works" bike, Johnson was on a production bike. RJ could've won the whole thing that year, but he had terrible luck towards the end of the season with mechanical failures. He was still a privateer. Honda was quick to recognize RJ's talent and buy him, just like they bought Hurricane Hannah and Ron Lechien.
@sgslim03 This is another 1984 race. Ricky "Too Hip" Johnson rode for Yamaha another entire year (1985) on the White and Red Yamaha's (search 1985 Rodil Cup) before Honda came and got him for the 1986 Season of which he dominated both the 250cc Supercross Series the 250cc Outdoor Nationals (got 2nd in the 500cc Outdoor Nationals) and Won his class at the Motocross Des Nations.
you think wrong dude. Marty was on HOnda in 1982, and he even tried racing San Diego 1983 on a Cagiva but didnt qualify for the Main. I know cause I got the magazine. I collect magazines.
This is great footage! I was a huge fan of D.B. and R.J. through the 80's. Whatever happened to Mickey Diamond?(125 champ) I can't find anything about him.
Supercross has come a long way, the announcer bragged about "computer designed jumps" wow, those jumps were harsh, today's supercross tracks are built much more friendly to the rider and bike, as long as you are clearing the jumps.
why anyone has commented yet? this is great "racertoy"!! its kind of funny and incredible at the same way seeing how things were about almost 30 years ago...stange bikes , gear , track everything! haha if they can only have had the bikes of nowadays who knows what could had happen
70 mph ? 40 feet in the air ? what a load of crap, this guy doesn't let the truth get in the way of his bullshit.

That race is from late in the '82 Supercross season. Johnson and Glover were on '83 pre-production YZ250K models. Not works bikes.

@buckerm Marty Smith was supposed to retire after the '81 season but Honda offered him a ride on their support team for '82.
