this reminds me vividly of playing this piece in orchestra...i remember playing that high violin harmonic and just wanting to be a cello...not even to play one...just to be one...
You know something is incredible when it pulls you in and you aren't even a string player. (horn player) I can't stop listening to this piece. I need to get this recording!! Makes me curious though how it would transfer to a brass choir. The articulations change some things but I think the blend would be very close.
Boult and the London Symphony is the definitive recording. The interpr and playing are stunning! Yet I also love this recording. The conductor and orchestra are ______?
I'm not sure about this performance, it is indeed very very good, but whether or not it loses something in the YT translation I don't know, but at 2:40 ish, it just (to my ear) sounds a little subdued, I'm sure its probably a combination of YT and my PC though, it just doesn't sound as clear and perhaps "sharp" as I like this piece to be.
Try to listen to this on a cold Sunday evening in mid December, looking out into the frost, maybe venture out for a second leaving the door open so you still hear it..take a few deep breaths,go back in and take a sip of your wine....an amazing piece which embodies all that is good in the world
This piece is the most heavenly and yet dark piece of classical music I have ever heard! There is NOTHING that compares to this! This is the soundtrack of life!
This is the most beautiful piece of music ever written. (And believe me, I have listened to a LOT of classical music) If you had to describe emotion to a stranger, this is what you would use. It makes you think of rolling green hills, seas, mountains, people you love, everything. Hooray for RVW!
@mrturveydrop23 As stated before this piece has English countryside all through it. It reminds me, in a very vivid way of my old home. Amen to you for your comment " Hooray for RVW". Englands' adopted son and rightfully so.
@mrturveydrop23 I heartily agree! I probably listen to it at least once each night, right here on youtube. Another outstanding work, one that evokes many emotions & one that you undoubtedly know well, is Barber's seminal masterpiece, "Adagio for Strings" ! Here's to good listening!
My orchestra just played this tonight at their first concert . and im upset cause i couldnt go see them and this is my favorite piece from them , & they played this song with another orchestra too . :/ ughh . lOl
In addition to the cd on the magazine cover..there was also a programme about how and why Williams did it the way he did. Fortunatly I recorded it on video tape, I don't know if I still have it, but I wonder if it can be converted to DVD?
Yes, this is absolutely the definitive performance and recording. It was available on a free cover CD on the BBC's music magazine at the time. It's by far the best, recorded in the cathedral for which it was written and with the orchestra divided into main, echo and soloists and arranged accordingly. A superb recording of the most haunting and remarkable piece of music.
Absolutely wonderful!! This is my favourite piece of classical music and you are right that this recording really is beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Yes. It really is the best recording. Anyone know if Sir Adrian Boult made a Gloucester recording? Also is this version available as a commercial release? I see somebody has posted the video layer of this recording too.
outstanding

Painfully beautiful & powerful.
Tears at my nonexistent soul.
BTW, how can some miscreant dislike this?

It makes me think of the great British countryside. I think that was the general idea. It is British through and through.

@mrturveydrop23 How about Villa-Lobos: Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, Aria (Cantilena), - I think it is at least as good.
kungfumonk007 1 year ago
@kungfumonk007 How strange you make this comment. Because the ONLY other composer whom I rate as equal with RVW is Heitor Villa-Lobos

@mrturveydrop23 It is a great piece, but I think that conclusion would be a little drastic.
