im a muay thai guy but the potential for sanshou is higher as it includes lots of wrestling/takedown moves aswell as solid striking, MT stand up is alot better but the lack of wrestling skill is like having only a gun when ur opponent has a gun and a grenade
@ganjislammer even shaolin monks now use ONLY sanda to fight, take a look at this real shaolin warrior monk called shifu yan lei , hes bad as hell, hes also one of the real shaolin monks now. So the only advice i can say is that, try to find a good school, dont be conned that easily but some " secret techinuqes" or the "black book of shaolin kung fu" which teaches "deadly moves "etc, but in fact is nothing more than some crap stuff that you waste money on.

@ganjislammer Find a good school and teacher esp a traditional school and learn. Its best to study in a trad kung fu school , those are the type that would teach you deadly techniques that are forbidden in ring fights.

Kung Fu varies, my kung fu school is way better than the others in my area. There are bad martial arts schools always and great ones.

Most kung fu now relies more on fancy/flashy movements which is worthless in real combat. Like i said earlier, sanda is a mixture of various KF styles,so its the ULTIMATE art.

@heavyironmusic Liu Hailong is an awesome fighter. I'm both a sanda and muay thai fan. But the facts are Liu Hailong have only fought in China and only under sanda rules. Buakaw has fought in a variety of stand up rules successfully including sanda. I wished we could have seen Liu Hailong against Nathan Corbett or Tyron Spong under Shootboxing rules. That would have been epic.

Sanda is not a style. It's a venue and rule set. There are a lot of different fighters, from different Chinese styles fighting in this venue. When Shaolin guys fight in sanda, they are using the techniques from their traditional forms. I see a number of classics in this fight.
As far as the best, and most practical, that really depends on the teachers. Wing Chun does not actually turn out many well ranked fighters. Shuai Jiao seems to put out a lot of them.

You even see guys who have been classically trained in Tai Chi on occasion. You can recognize them by how they tend to redirect force, and the types of take downs they prefer to use.
If you actually know some of the Chinese arts, you can clearly see them used individually, not combined into one.

@ganjislammer Sanda or sanshao means Free Fighting and Is a set of rules for competing with each other using different backgrounds. I have a cousin that practice wing-chun and he said, that most martial arts clubs with different styles can register members and get a certificate after doing some form of qualification, and after that you can compete in sanda tournaments.
many teach their specific styles but also train with this sports type with more practical applications of forms and strikes
Styles that seem to put out top quality fighters are Shuai Jiao, Tong Bie, various versions of Shaolin and village long fist (depending on the teacher). guys that do the Hakka arts are devastating. I know some Choy Lay Fut guys that will just tear people up and do very well in competitions.
MT is just one art. In China, they have hundreds. Each one is a different method of fighting. Unless you are well steep in this, you really can't compare any one of them to MT

this fight is obviously unfair for Muay Thai cause its by Sanshou rules, not Muay Thai rules. So throwing is allowed and clinching not for more than 3 secs. Not good for the Thai. No chance of kneeing or elbows. And elbows are padded.

Sanda is a fighting system created by the Chinese government in the 80s. Its not pretty old , its very recent.
It mixes the best most practical things of all Chinese arts into a single system. In the 70's, most of the kung fu people, especially in america, were just formed cuz of bruce lee popularity. I do capoeira, kung fu, and taekwondo mainly. WEll atleast classes, but that brings me back to muay boran which was about actual combat and training. @ThaiBettas What is a general match? The fact is that kung fu is a style that has long term goals. Sanda was made purely because it needed to give young students some fighting ability. Becuase the beginning of kung fu is stances and physical hell. So sanda is purely meant just to let noobs have fighting ability in kung fu. So of course a sanshou fighter is worse, kung fu in the long run is better but sanshou is for students of kung fu. Muay thai has a limit, kung fu's is much higher.

@MechPhantom even kung fu is never perfect , it stil has some flaws in it, now too kung fu is turning more into a sport and even in the shaolin temple, its more performance than a fighting art. You will notice , the more simple the art is the deadlier, like wing chun ,krav maga etc. So yea sanda is pretty good/deadly too. Most kung fu now relies more on fancy/flashy movements which is worthless in real combat. Like i said earlier, sanda is a mixture of various KF styles,so its the ULTIMATE art.

Buakaw has fought in a variety of stand up rules successfully including sanda. I wished we could have seen Liu Hailong against Nathan Corbett or Tyron Spong under Shootboxing rules. And for your info, full contact fighting existed in China for thousands of years. It's not something new developed in the 1980's You can google the comeptitions from 1928 and read the reports of people getting killed and injured in those fights. They had Shuia Jiao fights 2000 years ago.

Sanda is not a style. It's a venue and rule set. There are a lot of different fighters, from different Chinese styles fighting in this venue. When Shaolin guys fight in sanda, they are using the techniques from their traditional forms. I see a number of classics in this fight.
As far as the best, and most practical, that really depends on the teachers. Wing Chun does not actually turn out many well ranked fighters. Shuai Jiao seems to put out a lot of them.

But it's not actually all chinese systems combined into one. Every fighter fights with the style they were taught. Guys of every system get in and fight. You even see guys who have been classically trained in Tai Chi on occasion. You can recognize them by how they tend to redirect force, and the types of take downs they prefer to use.
If you actually know some of the Chinese arts, you can clearly see them used individually, not combined into one.

I have a cousin that practice wing-chun and he said, that most martial arts clubs with different styles can register members and get a certificate after doing some form of qualification, and after that you can compete in sanda tournaments.

Styles that seem to put out top quality fighters are Shuai Jiao, Tong Bie, various versions of Shaolin and village long fist (depending on the teacher). guys that do the Hakka arts are devastating. I know some Choy Lay Fut guys that will just tear people up and do very well in competitions.
MT is just one art. In China, they have hundreds. Each one is a different method of fighting. Unless you are well steep in this, you really can't compare any one of them to MT

this fight is obviously unfair for Muay Thai cause its by Sanshou rules, not Muay Thai rules. So throwing is allowed and clinching not for more than 3 secs. Not good for the Thai. No chance of kneeing or elbows. And elbows are padded.
