It's simple. The Pirates are horrible and have no talent in their system. In order to set the team up to possibly win in the future, they traded their good players for as much talent as they could. Had they not done that, Bay and the rest would have left via free agency or declined due to age.

The Pirates are rebuilding and attempting to do it the right way this time. I applaud the trades.

with this move, the redsox have a legit left fielder signed through 2009 at less than 1/3 the cost of what manny wants. and we have $20million to play with in the off-season.

he'll be fine playing in left field at fenway, you don't need range to play there, the wall is 310 feet down the line and the wall is 37 feet high.

left field at fenway is like playing wiffle ball, arm strength is not very important when you're the left fielder at fenway. left field in pittsburgh is like a soccer field.

He does hustle when he's at the plate. He runs out every grounder and gets several infield hits a year. He's deceptively quick that way. He also is a selectively good base stealer.

The only thing you need to worry about is the arm and whether or not he can handle the media pressure. He was never big on being "the man" in Pittsburgh. He doesn't like the spotlight...but he doesn't need to be the man in Boston. He'll be good for your team.
