when he hit the wall my blood just froze...but when i saw him running out of there i just started laughing :D joy/amusement...just liek he would grab a new car and say "zomg somebody giev me a new ride ffs i just totaled the first one and i wanna win this" :D
@1D0N Tool? Sorry I mean small petty minded spelling pedant. I'd love to spell check everything you ever wrote on the Internet, but sadly I don't give enough of a fuck.
Stommelen died when the rear wing of his Porsche 935 broke and his car slammed into a concrete barrier at Riverside, so that must have been Winkelhock's accident.
Correct, if I'm right F2 races were held until 1983 where the last 1000km race was held at the Nordschleife as well with Bellof's fantastic 6:11.13 qualifying lap.
From 1984 on they raced on the new GP circuit.
This crash happenend in 1980, caused by a little touch after the start in the first corner (the old 270° righthander). Manfred damaged his front wing there
Surely that's a great idea. Just after I asked the question, I remembered there's no excuse for ignorance now that there's wiki. Sorry for my stupid quetion. hAHA!
The fact that cars had a habit of frying you in-situ in the 70's and 80's meant if you were conscious and could still move, you got out.... and quick! It focuses the mind.
i guess he caught some air then? 2 things that were freaky. 1 is as you say how did he climb out but i suppose back in 1980 race car construction was still adequate (obviously) for this crash. look at it. It may look horrific enough to cause death but the front
wing touched and absorbed so much of the crash, because it made the car go to the ground mega quick. It was cartwheeling and rolling. If it didn't roll it could have been a gilles villenueve. and then when it rolls on the ground it didn't impact the fence bank
until it slowed right down and even then the wheels rode the bank. A very good outcome and lucky escape. 2 even if it is f2 how could it flip with a rear and front wing. Yes it may have been on the brow of the hill which obviously enough but gilles villenueve and patrese and more recent only flipped when they made contact.
He was lucky that the car didn't hit the wall too hard. The energy was killed by the "soft" rolls. The car rolled along the wall instead of smashing into it. I'm sure it was still pretty hard though.
Wow! He jump out the car before it even stop rolling good! Amazing that he wasn't killed! I guess that's one reason why formula cars don't race on the mountain course anymore.
I guess the wings on the car have escaped your attention? In fact it looks like one of the front wings is damaged, but either way, cresting a rise like that is still risky. Back from the good old, bad old days of catch fencing!
HE WALKED AWAY FROM THAT!!!!!.... HOLY SHIT! and during those years crashes like that would result in a fatality or a near fatal, career ending crash. really amazing!
After the accident, he said "little crash"... My father knew him. :)

IM sure he got out so fast because he knew the risk of the car exploding from leaking fuel onto a hot engine or exhaust.

to gdgdgfdggfdfg - HI! time ago while
surfing through YT I could watch a footage about a 956 Porsche going off track (suspension failure apparently).
It was for sure Winkelhock or possibly Stommelen's fatal crash.
Alas I have never been able to get it again on YT: if by chance you'll find it out
I'd feel thankful if you'll let me know. Thx.
