  • I Love Ubuntu

  • I really wish people would stop mistaking this for Chrome OS...

  • gOS is nice because its fast and runs on low hardware requirements AND doesnt have all of the extras that make ubuntu run slower. I always find ubuntu to bulky and doesnt support my video card easily.. but Linux mint and gOS do....

  • I tought gOS stands for GoogleOS made by google... I learned something today!

  • @bravo3000pirate lol you learn something everyday lol

  • its really nice...but what sucks is that you cant use ubuntu repositories like in others ubuntu based OS like Linux Mint....

  • I dun know how to use it.

  • so u cant use apps like microsfot word or play games?

  • Yes you can. You can install ms office 2007 in Ubuntu, but it will require some skill with Linux OS. You can also install plenty of Windows games in Ubuntu, but not all of them, and it also requires some degree of Linux CLI knowledge. Google out Wine, and you can find a list of games that work 100% and there are others that work partialy or buggy. All-in-all, its not point'n'click installation of MS Windows apps, but it is easy enough if you are familiar with Linux based OSes.

  • Another way to put it.. Debian is like the constitution of the debian release. And Ubuntu is the one funding the railroads that will connect this great land and permit the freedom of transit and such..

gOS, looks more like one of those towns near the railroad track with those high facades to make the town look a bit bigger than what is really there..

  • I wish they would cut all the extra little bs linux os's and focus on the good ones. I can think of a few but lets see ubuntu, fedora, suse, red hat, puppy, gentoo, and cent. If they focused on a few then linux would take the market.

  • a linux OS is basically just a set of packages created by linux community (independent of existing OS's only on number of users). But the great number of OS's is good too cause are some OS's good for some usage while others are good for other types of usage. It's not like Windows: it has only 2 versions :server and desktop and if u don't really get to chose which kinda sucks

  • Windows has to many os types. You have like 6 for vista. Windows is a joke and will continue to losse its strangle hold on the market

  • Well they have classes of Vista, like Vista for porn, Vista for game and such.. Then they have 64-bit vista and 32-bit vista, which I've heard 64-bit is a rewrite.. But one thing for sure is they are trying to close up the "open pc" architecture.. I think Microsoft thinks their ass is getting kicked too much to be comfortable so they've got to saw off PC compatibility to only Vista.. They don't know how much trouble they are borrowing.

But there are a lot of fools supporting them too.

  • gOS is an opportunisitic attempt to cash in on the "google OS" hype. It is only a repackaging of Ubuntu distro on the Enlightenment window manager. Summed up, IT IS A THEME, A SKIN, A CONFIGURATION OF DEBIAN PACKAGES WITH CUSTOM ART, disguising as a OS.. It would have been better to call it Geez, that gOS.

  • actually gOS is a very good idea cause it's free and on their site they specify that is made after Ubuntu 8.04.1. And some users like Ubuntu how it is, others prefer a lighter OS and easier to use (Ubuntu is easy enough, too easy i could say, but for a Windows user seems kinda complicated) and this doesn't affect Ubuntu THAT much, just some users will stop using Ubuntu and start using gOS maybe but all developers will create their programs for GNOME too (usable by Ubuntu)

  • and at the same time Ubuntu is a repacking of Debian like many other Linux OS's and every error found by Ubuntu is posted on Debian's forum and all errors found in Debian and whatevuh patch is made for the error works on Ubuntu too. Same with other OS's too

  • Then why do they provide Google web apps with it as part of the interface, and use a green background on the desktop, and use the acronym "gOS".. Could they be attributing the popularity of google with it and the hype that Google uses a version of Ubuntu internally? gOS was made popular about that time too.

    Debian is open source only.

Anyhow, It's branding.. I was in the dot-com's during the 90s I know a sales mind fart when I see it. Javascript wasn't Java, afterall.

    Canonical funds coders.

  • I serriously doubt that gOS funds anybody.. I believe they just show up at shows hoping to cut a deal with someone to share their brand popularity with some platform.

BTW, Ubuntu has it's own netbook package..

The other main difference.. Mark Shuttleworth made his money off open source, he utilized public key encryption technology to setup a certificate authority, which binds legal representation to businesses, to permit people to sell stuff over the web. His company was "Thawte".

  • the ideea is that Windows users can find the interface too different and is good to have from where to choose (when i first used linux 4 months ago i knew nothing about distributions or not even that it was free so only by luck i choosed Ubuntu (and glad i did) all those distros got me really confused so it's a good part and a bad part in this)

  • will gos work on normal desktops ?,because mine wont work off live cd

  • it should

  • gOS is great i still prefer Ubuntu but gOS is good
