It is scenes like this that make me wish Twin Peaks could have gone on forever. Cooper, Bobby, Donna, it breaks my heart watching them here. I don't think I've seen anything as beautifully sad as Lara Flynn Boyle crying with that song in the background.
Just watched the whole series again. The haunting beautiful music. This sad sad scene as we know there's been another murder and nobody could stop it.
I'm glad to say that I listened to Julee Cruises' music without any Twin Peaks influence and can still say say that it was a very enjoyable, memorable experience. When i hear this music now I can still remember what I was thinking at the time i was hearing this album for the first time. Great stuff.
I think the series should've ended at this episode. Or maybe an episode or two after. This magically emotional scene lost its power when they dragged on the story too long.
do you think if he hadn't have failed, if he had stopped him, everything would have been different? it seems he had it, his chance to make things right. but he missed the signs and then it all fell apart. the look of reproach on the giants face...
do you think cooper could have been happy? it feels like this was the moment when it shifted, and they were all grieving that path now lost, their one chance for happiness
@zhg0507 The original soundtrack (season 1) was released before this episode from season 2 was shot. The song is included on Julee Cruise's album Floating into the Night.
If you have not seen the TV series Twin Peaks before, you will not understand the power of this scene. I think it is perhaps one of the most emotional scenes of the series because not only do the characters in the show share a feeling of devastation (unaware of why) as does the audience, the music also sets the mood. David Lynch (the creater of the show) is a genius for the worlds he creates!
@75791 OMG that is such a great assessment of what this particular episode really did mean to the show. It was like the sadness that the entire town felt over Laura's death and those who felt the evil presence in Twin Peaks, culminated in this one evening. Everybody in that town seemed to be either search desperately for what? They were not sure. And the rest were so very sad. Many were both. One of THE best episodes on TV ever! One of the BEST TV series! It raised the bar for TV drama.
@75791 I totally agree. The song combines a beautiful tune with such strong emotional power. Yet if you have seen the tv series and know who the characters are, you can feel the total devastation and despair - which was the intention of the director. Somehow it's more devastating than disaster movies such as 2012... Why? Because it IS the end of the world for those people - that's why the girl cannot stop her tears ...and yet, the world spins as if nothing happened at all....
I don't care what anyone else thinks (and I have yet to find anyone who agrees with me), but I personally am convinced that casting Hank Worden as the waiter / room service guy / human form of the alien was a direct reference to "The Searchers."
Often my mind lives in Twin Peaks subliminally. Especially since i live in a village visually quite like Twin Peaks. I just can´t control crying on many times (at this video about 1:00). Even though the TV-series seems weird. In real life things happen that are seen in the series. Mind´s eyes see things differently than real eyes.
This scene broke me into pieces when I watched the series for the first time.
And the second. And the third time, too.I found myself in every second on this 3 minutes masterpiece, my entire life, never got connected with something that strong before. Thank you,David, thank you for everything you did. Your art shaped a great part of my character.
I remember the night this aired. We were all excited to see how the mystery would be revealed, after numerous red herrings and subplots that got sillier, but then we got this episode, directed by Lynch himself. What we DIDN'T expect was for the killer to be revealed in such a brutal and terrifying way, and the deep sadness that followed, seen in this clip. We just sat there after the show ended, feeling like everyone in this scene. Brilliant tv.
The whole scene is probably my favourite in the whole series.
I love when Donna is miming along to the song to James, it's so sweet.
And then Maddie's death, which I found to be the most disturbing thing I've ever seen. And then this scene, with everyone knowing something horrible has just happened.
@panther4u25 He is sort of the real-life house for the giant - if you'll notice any time the giant appears, we see the old man first. Kind of how BOB exists inside of Leland, yet seperate. So if the giant knew, then so did the old man.
@pocky4040 Yes, although I think Droolcup and the Giant have a different relationship than BOB and Leland. Leland doesn't know anything when BOB's outside him, or he'd do something. I think the Giant plays on Droolcup's senility to allow his host to have more access, since Droolcup won't be able to do anything w/ the information.
Many seem to think it's a great moment. I believe it's the music who plays the biggest part, but to be fair I agree with you. It's combined perfection.
As good as some of the proceeding episodes were, Lynch and co could of ended it all right here and would been a really powerful and emotional way to bow out.
that was the best episode of the show that reveal the killer of Laura Palmer,I wish David Lynch had directed more episodes instead of letting all kind of so so directors make filler episodes epically in season 2
Absolutely beautiful. Lynch goes from one extreme to another. While in this scene we go to a sad realization, the preceding scene was dreadful, maybe the scariest scene in Twin Peaks. I adore David Lynch so much :))
i just finished watching this show tonight my uncle said id like it cause its a weird show like Lost but I think its like a soap opera on acid and i hate soap operas But i love this show wish their could have been another season orr 2
It was great show - almost as good as The X Files. Audrey (Sherilyn Fenn) was my favorite character and of course the most beautiful female of Twin Peaks.
Thats brilliant! Me and my bro are thinking of going. I have always wanted to get wasted at the roadhouse and then nurse my hangover at the Double R lol.

Right, and the poignancy of the surreal connection between the characters who are on the "in": The giant, the Log Lady, the Young folk (Donna and Bobby, in one of the two or three moments we like him), the old Waiter, and Cooper himself.
This is my favorite scene in all of television, and maybe movies. Abject HORROR strummed out on guitar and angel singing. It's a shame the post doen't include Julee's last line in the song: "The World Spins." or "As the World Turns." Thanks for posting. It's Lynch.
one of the best scenes I've ever seen (including the part of the murder before) in a tv-show or a movie:cruel and soft, dark and magic...thank for posting
#1 Best TV Episode of All-Time. This episode. #14, I think. I remember the first time I watched it, at this scene, my body starting heaving and then crying uncontrollably. Like having tears with convulsions. It was such a deep cry that did not match the light tinge of emotional sadness that I felt. It was an otherworldly feeling to be crying so deeply, yet not have the matching emotion. When I got to this episode and this happened to me, that's when I knew I was in love.. Pure brilliance.
The best TV scene ever. Cooper touches his ring finger (around 10 secs), but the Giant has the ring. Love it. The blaring saxophones give me goosebumps. The silent grief in the room: the Log Lady's blank look, Cooper's horror at having failed, Donna's silent sobs, that beautiful shot of Julee lit by red (around 2 mins). And then the fade to red curtains. Nothing can ever beat this scene. Light, sound, colour, editing, atmosphere ... beauty.
@chuffnobbler My favorite scene in my favorite show. You are right on all counts. And the horror is that while this terrible thing is happening--"The World Spins." The Log Lady's look, Bobby's, Donna's--as if the world were echoing the tragedy.
I've watched this entire series at least four times (from when I was a small child when it aired on ABC until now), and every time the Giant says "It's happening again!" my heart starts to ache... All the powerful symbolism, the beauty of Julee Cruise's nigh inaudibly melancholy crooning, and the shared despair on everyone's faces that link them all together break me inside every time.
i don't think Bobby is crying for any specific reason. he's just crying because he feels the grief in the air. there's this great feeling of grief AND forgiveness at that stage in the episode, don't you think?
they're all sad. Bobby, in an unknowing sort of way, Donna, in an obvious way, and even Cooper, but in a more wise and 'held-back' way, i think.
any way, it's a beautiful scene, and it always makes me cry.
I have to admit that for ever I just couldn't get why Bobby was upset (couldn't have been about Laura, he never seemed that broken up about her death, he was all about Shelly..) I guess its one of those - something bad has happened - but nobody knows what sort of scene. Maybe, I don't know. If anyone can explain it to me properly I'd love that!
Although I got why DONNA was crying. Laura/Harold's suicide - which she freaking caused. Ugh!
bobby was crying about his dad and the fact he enerv had a good relationship with him then his dad tells him about the dream he had and how he wanted his son to be happy, when usually his father doesnt show him any ofection. people go to this bar and empathise with the music the whole point is everyone is troubled
I love how Cooper gets merged into the drapes. His mind fails to get conscious about what has happened and falls back into the cloud of consciouslessness..
This episode is without a doubt the best of the entire series - every time I see it I get totally captivated... It's fabulous and ingenious in every single way! <3
I bought all the episodes on video and have been watching one a night, I can't imagine how painful it must have been to wait a whole week to see the next one!
Taste like beauty is in the eye and heart of the one who perceives it. Twin Peaks and especially this particular episode is truly beautiful, a serene and sad moment from a compelling and enduring story.
A story of innocence lost forever...the terrible and ongoing battle between good and evil... while a world spins mindlessly on...
Hey Coop, your 25 years are almost up! Come back this way and finish the story!
This scene is so unbelievable... real art. I watched this series when I was oh 10 or 11, and it truly blew my mind in all sorts of ways.
During the entirety of the series, even through all its ups and downs, it was one of those rare moments where you just knew you were witnessing genius. It's just that intangible factor that you just don't see very often.
There'll never be another you, Twin Peaks. Much love.
Much magic. Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Agent Cooper knew that another had fallen to that ancient evil of the woods that the Bookhouse Boys were sworn to oppose. Am I right?
There are so many, beautiful, wonderful comments on this scene it's hard to think of anything else to say except that I agree with them all. I especially agree with the one about Bobby. Very heartrending. It completes the circle of sadness.
It did get 2 full seasons so I wouldn't say it was canceled quickly. The concept just wasn't sustainable. People didn't want to wait five years for the mystery to be solved so they solved it and then didn't know what to do next.
Ain't a god damn bad thing. TV shows aren't supposed to last forever. People would get bored of it after two seasons. Except for Married With Children. People LOVE Married With Children. And Good Times, and Martin.
This scene makes me so emotional every time I watch it. You can feel how helpless Coop feels, knowing something is terribly wrong but that he can't do anything about it.
Absolutely! The World Spins, or goes on around us, as horror descends. At the end where Coop looks up.... IN the album track, the song ends "The world spins."
Like many others, I think this is the greatest scene of the series. I was with a girl when I first saw this, a girl I had to leave behind. You can imagine how this really got to me, I was in bits after the credits started rolling. Powerful TV. Viva Mr Lynch!
It's such a shame this isn't on the soudtrack. It's Julee Cruise's best song. It's on her album Floating Into The Night. Heartbreaking. Absolutely beautiful.
I cried during this scene when I first watched it. The power of this scene made me feel like I lost someone very dear to me

God I love this scene. The music is Perfect.

I bought all the episodes on video and have been watching one a night, I can't imagine how painful it must have been to wait a whole week to see the next one!

In moments such as these, David Lynch is pure genius. Image and sound. Emotion. Terrifying beauty.
'Twin Peaks' is a great piece of art. And this scene, in particular... It never fails to bring a chill down my spine.

Much love.

Ditto! Twin Peaks as the whole series wasn't always perfect but moments like this... Pure genius.
You just feel an overwhelming magic.

Hey, IWANTMYMTV... many thanks for posting this, almost went crazy trying to find this scene.
The series really was avante-garde.
daddygum 2 years ago

LibbyMaeBrown 3 years ago 11
Absolutely! The World Spins, or goes on around us, as horror descends. At the end where Coop looks up.... IN the album track, the song ends "The world spins."
The last flight of hope from the earth.
odovicor 3 years ago
Like many others, I think this is the greatest scene of the series. I was with a girl when I first saw this, a girl I had to leave behind. You can imagine how this really got to me, I was in bits after the credits started rolling. Powerful TV. Viva Mr Lynch!

Why wasn't this song on the Twin Peaks Soundtrack?
ZestonN 3 years ago 2
It's such a shame this isn't on the soudtrack. It's Julee Cruise's best song. It's on her album Floating Into The Night. Heartbreaking. Absolutely beautiful.
