This is one of the most epic philosophical moment in a superhero movie. What people need to understand is that Rorschach and Doctor Manhattan are still heroes fighting for their beliefs and philosophies to the very end: Rorschach is holding on to his ideal of truth, that people need to know what is happening to the world so they can be free to take action themselves, the Doctor fights for Humanity to protect them even if it means it must be in the shadows and Rorschach understands this.
I love how, with the knowledge of his pending death, Rorschach was not above fear. He was trembling, he was afraid. For that moment, Rorschach became Walter, and he was afraid to die. But upon sensing Manhattan's hesitation, he held back his own fear, become Rorschach again and ordered him to finish it.
@rinraiden Yeah and I love (from a cinematic point of view) the look in Manhatten's eyes when he realizes that Rorschach isn't going to back down because he knows that he's right. But to defened what he (Dr. Manhatten) thinks he's going to have to kill Rorschack. I still hate Manhatten though, he got convinced from the dickhead blonde Adrian that lying to gain world peace was ok which inadvertantly leads to Rorschach's death
@rinraiden Oh and I'm not arguing with you, but to me it seems like he's trembling more out of anger and sorrow that he can't live on without lying and giving up his legacy for justice, which he wouldn't ever do, so he just decides to die for his legacy rather than live for nothing
hmm... anyone else thing the guy who plays Rorschach, could play an older version of Jason Todd? you know the Red Hood, Batman's former sidekick, who now has his own comic series? eh i think their a lot alike. Rorschach and Jason.
@NillyFmusic And that's what Rorschach said earlier in the seen, "Never compromise, not even in the face of Armagedon, that's the difference between you and me, Daniel."
@crazyhead217 because he's a true hero. even in the face of death he was unwilling to lay aside his principles. it was either dr. manhatten kills him, or he goes on his way to tell the world of veidt's plans. rorshach is the epitiome of the unsung hero. he died for the world, and not a single person would know (night owl doesn't see him die in the comic)
I was disappointed after reading the novel, Rorschach died alone and no one seemed to give a shit. Imo the level of emotion, if ever so slight, brought to this scene by Nite Owl made the film version seem more complete I think.
@P00PD0G89 I agree completely. I found this ending much more satisfying than the novel.
I also preferred the use of equipment replicating Dr Manhattan's power to be much better than a silly psychic squid, even though neither is less sci-fi than the other.
But in the context of the Watchmen world, it does make a lot more sense as a plan.
@P00PD0G89 I think that was kind of the point of his death in the book though. He was alone in his opinions and would not compromise. He was the only real hero of the group and therefore died a forgotten death. Think of all the real heroes in our time who had the same happen in the military or in other heroic acts. I was not against Nite Owl being in the scene (I actually mostly agree his inclusion was nice), but it could have been executed better to keep that lone death idea intact.
@P00PD0G89 But thats the brilliance of it,rorschach died like he said everyone would, and him being punished for not betraying his ideals paints the grim world that mr.Moore was trying to paint.
Yep Rorscach and Nightowl. Tho, Nightowl didn't do that much in the movie I like how he cheered up Rorschach whenever he could (because he was his FRIEND) and Nightowls scream at the end didn't really seem like acting. Almost like it was real?
@fantastic097 well mostly for the things hes done the people who died because of him his life as a chlid plus his was crzy and he wanted it it to stop is what i think your welcome.
Upon first viewing (or reading!) i think everyone sympathizes with Rorschach. He was our conduit into the story, and received the most screentime. However, upon repeated viewings, i start to sympathize with all of the characters. I'm to the point now where my two favourites are the Comedian and Veidt. These two were the only two that REALLY understood the problem, and did the most to serve and protect humanity.
For me it is impossible to sympathize with Blake. The reason is that he was not only cynical, he was simply evil. Laughing at the rotten face of the world is one thing, and it could even be considered a cool character feature, but being a part of it, is something completly different.
Being cynical does not justify killing a president or shooting preagnant woman in the face.
@Themadhorse I do, but you obviously don't. And hmm yes, it's been out for a while...
Well, Casablanca has been out for almost 70 years and I'm pretty sure a lot of people, myself included, haven't seen it. Kinda puts a dent in your theory of "if a movie has been out for a while, everyone must have seen it."
@yogs0th0th The only ones who know who the watchmen is, are those who reads comics. And they have probably seen the movie already. Why would someone search for Rorschachs death if they don't even know who Rorchach is?
@souldragon121 oh ok,yea if you read the novel before you saw the film ,his death came as no suprise..agreed rorschach was plain badass and the best character in the film
@usernameDOGS i never read the novel might pick it up and i was pissed cause he was the best character =p also i was pissed that veidt only got punched in the face a few times should have been killed
@feladir123 How can one tell if you have a soul? I'm a ginger... In fact people tell me I look like Rorschach. Not sure if I have a soul or I have to earn it...
@legofrea3 1) Basically, it's a whodunit. In a world where vigilantes have been outlawed and all former superheroes either work for the government or are retired, somebody appears to be trying to kill ex-superheroes. Rorschach begins an investigation into the matter, and the movie goes from there.
2) That really reveals A LOT about the plot of the story. Do you really want to know?
@legofrea3 1) like Stiqmatainmypants said is right.
2) he cared about the people and didnt want to be a villain by killings millions to save others. He wanted to do so that he didnt want to live with this though of being responsible for deaths of millions.
This is one of the most epic philosophical moment in a superhero movie. @fantastic097 He was the last true "hero" of this dysfunctional team, the only one who couldn't accept what Ozymandias had done to "save" the world.
He didn't want to die, Doctor Manhattan needed to kill him. Rorschach would have stopped at nothing to tell the world what happened.
In the end, the decision is left up to the viewer. Does Rorschach's journal make the paper, or does it sit in the bin for all eternity?
TheKingOfRuckus 2 months ago
@TheKingOfRuckus so dr. manhattan is like the liberal agenda, and rorschach's journal is like the republican party?
