I lived next to a guy that had a homemade version of a outdoor wood boiler. He would put old shingles and tires in his at night to boost his heat up. He claimed it was better to burn waste than to bury it in a landfill. Usually the wind did not cause it to blow towards my house, but every now and then it would, and boy did it stink. He even showed me some logs made of old carpet that he used to get wet wood burning, this guy loved to burn stuff and was a pyromaniac.
This guy is an absolute moron!! There ain't nothing on his system that is done right!
I agree with a lot of the comments on here about this guy. I can see scale buildup in his future and a leaky firebox cause his steel ain't thick enough to withstand the environment that he has subjected it to. I can also see people getting burned by his domestic hot water cause there is no way to regulate the heat of the water... I feel sorry for everyone who knows/lives with this guy. He is a walking disaster.
@Efram007 if he is using the water storage and central heating systems them they will both have tpr valves on them which releive over pressure and over temperature
@2362marshall - This is very true on the temp of the domestic hot water. What he should have done is have a side-arm heat exchanger for the domestic so he don't overheat the domestic hot water and pop-offs to relieve the pressure. Once he heats that water up in a closed system @ 60+psi the system WILL build pressure. He needs a regulator on it for his makeup. Temper valves don't do squat as far as pressure they just lower the temp of the water NOT the pressure!
yes but you can get different rated ptr valves eg to blow at over temp or over pressure ,i think in australia its a company called rmc if my memory is right ,its 12 years since i worked in australia
@2362marshall - what you are making reference to is a T & P pop off. But what I am getting at is that it is all in the same loop. The same water that goes to the hot water tank is the same as going to the house for heat, etc. To me he knows just enough to get hurt or someone else hurt. If he had his domestic hooked up to an side arm heat exchanger that is actuated by a aqua stat and/or a actuator valve he would have closer to what all the outdoor wood furnace companies have.
Nice looking furnace, Nice craftsmanship, I was wondering if any pop off valves were used in making this boiler or how about a low water safety? I would hate to see one of the kids put cool water to a hot boiler, non the less nice looking unit hope it works safetly for many years for you.
Could be airflow or water flow depends on the valve - might sound difficult but i'm trying to explain how easy it is but it's not turned on right now - anyways it's as cheap as an 80 watt bulb if thet explains everything

Won't the burning wood eventually rot a hole in the old pressure tank? Did you line the bottom of it with sand and heat bricks? It seems it would be a real SOB to replace the pressure tank if a hole eventually burns in it.
hey Doc, cool idea. part 3 was a big improvement! Thanks for sharing the information, could you do something like that inside? Would probably be more dangerous.
dr furnace you idiot from part two to part three theres a huge gap.. I hope pepsi isnt paying for your failor.. you missed a huge part in the video. how am i supposed to replicate this you idiot.. oh and by the way i can tell when your trying to pitch pepsi retard.
my man bob!, very nice homebrew setup. looks like you just saved yourself about 10 grand! this is how its done and it's no different than what you'd pay someone to install.
Question: is your heat still regulated by a thermostat? or do you just open a window!! maybe i missed it in the videos, not sure but i guess you could use a thermo with a solenoid or circ pump or something. anyway nice work man, i'm jealous, seriously. that's something to be proud of!
That"s one Mad Max looking rig

Maybe I'm not seeing this water tank setup completely, but all I see is one pipe tied into the tank itself. What's wrong with this picture?

Dr. Furnace? Really? This dude is terrible at explaining shit. I hope he's not a plumber because his piping looks like hell.

So what are you doing to stop flue heat loss?

I bet you could use it as a distiller for your own moonshine. I guess that's wat the third pipe is for.
