He did win throphies with United, but he deserved much more. Such a shame he missed the golden era. After he left, United won... well, pretty much everything. There were better strikers than him in the past, but he surely is my favourite.

I would have to disagree with you there. We had an aging club and lost due to their egos people like Stam, Beckham, Yorke, Cole and players got old like Irwin and Keano. Then we didn't have a consistent goalie and went through Van de Grouh, Barthiez, Carroll, Howard. The list went on and on top of that we had young talent like Rooney and Ronaldo that wouldn't be great for another 3 years. It wasn't until the 2006-2007 season everything feel into place. We had Evra,Vidic, and Van Der Sar.

Yes we did well in 99,00,02 but that was because Arsenal just blew it and United didn't choke in the league. Other than 2001 SF in the Champions League we didn't get past QF until 2006-2007 season. Solkjaer was good and then he got hurt for 2 1/2 years. Ruud was basically it for United. Honestly looking back he was just a stop gap for Rooney and Ronaldo.

Then Ruud got hurt and got hurt even more the last 5 years. Now United has the new generation of players that are going to put Carrick, Fletcher, Park, Valencia on the bench.

He still will always be a Man United legend though.

@TaffTalk Thats garbage. As much as I love SAF he made an error in judement to let him go. Neither Rooney or Ronaldo played the same role as Ruud.Those 3 co existed fine. SAF just gave up on him because he was injured and, SAF was drinking the kool-aid of saha. They had a falling out and as per usual SAF then offloaded him. He was not declining yet. He went to Real and continued his goal scoring brilliance for them for 2-3 yrs there as well.

Ruud's role was fulfilled and we now had to look to grow Ronaldo and Rooney. Plus, Fergie has made it abundantly clear that no player is bigger than Man United, and when he started to act up and demean Sir Alex, he was half way out of the door. SAF doesn't tolerate egos (same case with Stam). Plus he wanted to go, and the £12Mil was a nice offer for 30 year old striker.

I think with Rooney it was more frustration with the scandal, the poor World Cup performance, the ankle injuries, etc. After talking with SAF and got everything cleared away then Rooney stepped up his game. I mean Chicharito was put in there to give Berbatov and Rooney a scare into their jobs and it worked.

Now look after he left and go with (2006-2001), 4 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League title, 2 League Cups. By that point we had a goalie, had defenders, and had Rooney and Ronaldo stepped up.

The teams that followed RVN had the best player in the world a far superior defense and keeper. There is just no denying what this man could do on the pitch in terms of scoring simply none. Just wasnt young enough to get in with ronaldo and that defense.
