have you read "Halo: Fall of Reach". A lot of them died in training due to the augmentations and other things. Others died in the field and out of all who were in the Spartan II project, the Master Chief was the last surviving Spartan. All this is clearly stated in "Halo: Fall of Reach".

1. good job

2. a battle very similar to the one in the real movie happened in the halo universe. the battle of reach was where actually about 300 spartans fought against and defended reach, taking out a ton of there ships. they knew what was going to happen to them but they did it anyway. Master Chief was one of the few spartans that survived.
