nah the first that were there were the celts, then later the norse-men came driven on by the hammer of the gods, about the same time they landed in dublin, they also landed in normandy as well. So when the irish defeated them only to have the normans land later and conquer them again.. We conquerd ireland and england and europe, hell we would of conquerd the world if it wasnt for christianity that turned fathers against sons and brothers against brothers
Ireland was actauly taken over by vikings in a way because in dublin there was signs of vikings found but there never was irish vikings theres only celts and thats kinda piss take i think....:P
Well yes, in the same way there were arabic Viking and african Viking, and Greek Vikings and Italian Vikings in that their were trading post set yp. That doesn't change the inhabitance of the post to that nation though, their where ever their from Vikings until they decide to leave the fold. I see your point though.
Maybe you should educate yourself with history. The first Viking Raid was in Ireland. THey gave the vikings land so they wouldn't kill them. So there is bound to be Irish Vikings...like myself :p
Im quite aware with the history of my people and the fact that many nations offered the Viking hordes, particulary under the rule of Rangar, as peace tribute as well as a constant supply of food to prevent further raids upon their lands.
However I am also quite aware that no nation under the support of any Cheiftan, Warboss, Emporer or otherwise was permitted to found itself in a foreign land without declaring itself a trade post of its motherland or it would be sacked for treason.
Ergo I repeat myself. I am quite aware that there were several trade post and forward camps stationed in foreign land, however this did not make them a member of those lands nor their decendents.
I am also quite aware that during the black crusades many trade post and camps were abandon due to the largely growing zeal of many more southern european lands such as ireland and briton and many if not all were recalled to the mother land to defend themselves and our pagan kingdoms.
well one of the greatest viking trading citys was dublin, and seeing as vikings lived there from its foundation until its capture by the normans, its save to say that most were born and raised in irelenda, hence, 'irish vikings' (same applys to limerick, cork and waterford)
no not really, the vikings in ireland at the time of the norman invasion were still very viking like in the traditional sense, but the normans, although sharing the same ancient viking ancestry, were completly deffirent, being heavily influencend by the french and english
Vikings are a commen term for Norsemen in the early medieval period, especially in connection with raids and monastic plundering made by Norsemen in Great Britain and Ireland. Northmen was famously used in the prayer A furore normannorum libera nos domine ("From the fury of the Northmen deliver us, O Lord!"), doubtfully attributed to monks of the English monasteries plundered by Viking raids in the 8th and 9th centuries.
yes, im well aware of all that, it doesnt change the fact that the vikings of ireland had very little in commen with the normans that invaded the island
thiere where vikings in Ireland but they didnt have orgins from ireland they where pure North Germanics and the none North germanic population in Ireland where celts
true, thats where their origins lay, but i can assure you by the time of the norman invasion the vikings of those cities had become 'more irish than the irish themselves' with the majority adopting irish cultural customs, the irish language, irish husbands and wifes, etc etc, hence 'celtic vikings'
Celts didnt have Runescript, the tech to build longboats, North Germanic language; The North Germanic Cultura, the Asatru or the mental part of a viking
no aspect for them to identitty to make them a viking
in The North Germanic language the word viking means something else then a Raider, I know what it means but what does it mean in Irish?
@irelandrocks2 i think they made up mostly as aristocracy. although many viking men married irish woman more so than irish men marrying nordic woman. not all the viking men brought over woman with them when they went off on raids and settled, many of them men did not bring woman because they were young and looking for these things. look at Iceland, they are half irish and half norwegian hahaha.
@Arodon3x0 Hiberno-Vikings or Viking Gaels, they were in pretty big numbers but did not have much political power because they were not into the whole clan nonsense the irish gaels praticed. most viking came via Norway and the Orkeny Islands. The Danes tried invading Ireland and thats when Brian Boru fought them and defeated them, the Danes were notorious more so for being vikings than swedes and norwegians.
It sucks

How could there be irish vikings?
Its a complete polar opposite, did they hunt themselves?
All day just chasing their ass in a circle with a spear...

I think this is the name of a Sports Team?
But there were Irish vikings. The Vikings founded the first towns in Ireland, Dublin, Waterford, Wexford, Limerick, etc.
Ireland has many Rune Stones, just visit their museums.
Yes the Irish vikings were Norse, but they lived in Ireland :)
