You have to think about the situation in the context of the Cold War. What were the Soviets going to think if Britain let a second-rate power like Argentina walk all over her? Maintaining peace in the Cold War was all about maintaining th balance of power. Plus it demonstrated to the Soviets that Britain had the ability to project power over long distances.

The war with Argentina showed that even a "first-rate power" such as Britain (this seems to be your implication anyway) would rather send their own people to die in order to keep control over some grey islands on the other side of the planet.
