This has always been one of my favorites. Back in 74 I used to go to sleep with this playing on my stereo. Jimi is truly missed. No one can touch him.
I don't think there was any keyboard on Drifting. A vibraphone was added posthumously. Even though I like the sound of the vibraphone, I bet, if he had lived, Jimi would finally have decided to use his guitar to simulate the vibraphone sounds - imho.
@TheDutchMill I knew Stills stomped his feet in "If 6 was 9".and played piano in "My Friend" (a fun song to play on acoustic guitar!). I really appreciate learning new details about Jimi's music. Where did you get this info about Stills on Drifting? Long live Jimi in our hearts and ears!
I love this song jimi hendrix really out did himself on this one ...jus listen to that guitar and keyboard track it was blend in together at the same time thru the same amp thats how it was récorded.......?

@ggreg93 ... Hey man.... Thanks! You really made my morning! I thank you very much for this and your follow up! I watched and this is what I was looking for. Hendrix never ceases to impress doesn't he?
Could you imagine living in this world without hearing this song? I couldn't. Thank you Jimi. I am blown away by that incredible note that starts at 2:49. I always assumed it was Jimi's voice, but maybe its his guitar that is actually singing with the passion and frailty of a trembling human voice crying out for love on a sea of forgotten tear drops. If it is his guitar, it is possibly the most mysterious single note ever played on a guitar. What do you think?
@shinyraygun it's just amp feedback probably from the neck pickup..but beautifully mixed by Eddie Kramer into the mix. the guitar was a toy in his hands basically - although honed by many years of groundwork, people forget he came up the hard way. the real hard way.
When I used to get high on pot and listen to this song, the guitar playing at the very end had me picturing Jimi emerging from beneath something.... like the sea or something.... VERY DEEP!!
IMO This is why Hendrix tops page as a guitarist, such a beautiful piece of music that has so much inocence in it. I love how other people can realate to songs like this that jimi wrote in the way i do. Rock on jim.....Rock on.
@GregasBoss22 It is, we're keeping it quiet because 'they' don't deserve to hear it. We'll just let them go on thinking that Jimi Hendrix = Foxey Lady, Purple Haze and The Wind Cries Mary. Nothing against wind.
@GregasBoss22 People who don't have much intelligence don't have the capacity to comprehend such intricate music, there are plenty of other songs out there by jimi that are AMAZING. Perfect in my opinion, its hard to try to come up with what jimi did.
Such a beautiful and haunting song. Only wish there were more serene and quiet shots of him playing. The bombastic and wild scenes are not what the song is about. Still a great vid though. Thanks for posting.
Hendrix a real dichotomy! He can throw you out into the far reaches of space with soaring apocalyptic shrills of a million atomic bombs and in an instant draw you right back in into a state of grace by coaxing hypnotic floating notes of crimson passion on sea of forgotten teardrops and leave you.....drifting! ...Gota stop smokin this stuff!
@2patero Yes, dude, he played exactly how he felt, & felt exactly how he played... one moment: "Manic Depression Must Be a MESS!!" (Manic Depression) & the next "we'll hold hands and watch the Sun rise from the bottom of the Sea" (Are You Experienced?) ... from "Evil Man makes me kill you, Evil Man makes you kill me, even though we're one under the Soul" (Machine Gun), to "Golden was the colour of the Dream I had not too long ago" (One Rainy Wish)... a mass of delicious contradictions, was Jimi.
arguing who is better is like arguing blue is better than orange.what cant be argued is jimi was an exceptional guitar player, song writer.one of the great musicians of our time...........................

@wildblueangel76 >Jimi Hendrix is my favourite electric guitarist but really you must know very little of Mozart's music to bring his name up here. Such an absurd comparison.
I am not making a comparison between them. Hendrix was a musician, Mozart was a musician and good music is good music no matter what instrument and era it was played in. Thanks for the feedback.
@Lizzie666666 > Where on earth did you pop up from? I was commenting on a comment made by wildblueangel76. People trying to justify how great they think a pop musician is will in the same breath sometimes bring up names like Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, etc, usually in my experience without having any real knowledge of their works, and yes, this IS a deliberate comparison and quite a ludicrous one. Pt. 1
@Lizzie666666 > In addition to Jimi Hendrix I also love the music of Bob Dylan, but wouldn't dream of comparing him to Shakespeare, however some people will also insist on doing this, lol, and are quite happy to do so without, I suspect, having even read one of his plays. Pt. 2

Jimi's mother was a beautiful, and sad lady. He always loved his mother and understood her sickness, even though she abandoned him, he always was sympathetic toward her, and never seemed to hold it against her. He looks just like her.
I think that this Piece Of Art shows exactly what has made Jimi (actually has forced him to become) one of the greatest (if not the greatest) guitar players and performers of all time-it was his inability to express all those emotions literally/verbally.
This is why I feel just like drifting when I hear this one.

The thing about Hendrix is; he'll always be remembered as a highly innovative and influential blues/rock guitar player, whereas Lady Gaga will be remembered for some freaky dress she wore and not her music.
this is probably the most beautiful music he ever wrote (along with The Wind Cries Mary) and if only all the rock and roll bullshit and dope and everything else didn't kill him we can see what we, and he, missed
I'd actually use a wish (if I had three) To keep jimi alive immortally. So he could keep teaching humanity the harmony of earth and space. Although he is kept alive immortally. (His music)
Love, what does it mean? 56 & never loved a woman, not really been in love, was married & cared for my wife. But I LOVE Hendrix. Why the hell did he have to die so young, his last night with a screwed up young woman? His Dad was a total jerk, wish someone had taken care of him.
HELP ME Guys. PLEASE! I don't remember the name of that guitarist - singer who sang in the memorial of Jimi Hendrix. He obviously sang Drifting and i'm almost sure that there was Steve Vai playing too (and doing solo). Thank to everyone that will help me.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssss!!! That was the right answer. But the musician i was talking about was not Corey Glover!! Shit!! :D There was another guitarist-singer in that song, but hey, i smoked too much joint maybe.... I don't fuck remember the name of that musician and i've seen him in concert. I can't believe it.
I absolutely love the fact that Hendrix's music, his guitar virtuosity, the poetry in his songs, along with a lot of music from the 60s and 70s is just so timeless. Hendrix, the Beatles, Cream, all those great bands defined classic rock...truly inspirational. RIP Jimi Hendrix and the Experience.
This has always been one of my favorites. Back in 74 I used to go to sleep with this playing on my stereo. Jimi is truly missed. No one can touch him.

Jimi, one of the greatest guitarists had a lasting influence on the development of rock music.
At the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, Hendrix and his band, which has greatly increased his popularity.
JIMI burned at the end after the ninth song "Wild Thing" his guitar.
He himself, said: "The time I burned my guitar it was like a sacrifice. You sacrifice the things you love. I love my guitar"
♫
THANKS FOR SHARING. HAVE A HAPPY TIME!

All of his songs are so unique and different.
Jimi accomplished in a few years that no one could accomplish in their whole life...
World would be a better place if he would still be alive but lets be honest, he was too good to be on this planet for long.
Now he's in Heaven, jamming with Mitch, Noel, Billy, Buddy and everyone else.

Love, what does it mean? 56 & never loved a woman, not really been in love, was married & cared for my wife. But I LOVE Hendrix. Why the hell did he have to die so young, his last night with a screwed up young woman? His Dad was a total jerk, wish someone had taken care of him.
MrCorbett26 2 years ago
He took care of him self..
with the amount of wisdom and spiritual power he had death meant nothing to him.

I think the sound track is out of phase because the vocal is gone and only reverb remains.

my fav jimi track, followed by Villanova junction, may this be love and Machine gun...and so many more...
the mark of a true genius, a virtuoso...
RIP Jimi........

Happy Birthday Jimi ! Today would have been the 67th birthday of the greatest ever !
I hope you're in Heaven with a Foxy Lady by your side, while you watch the sun rise from the bottom of the sea, and you're kissing the sky !

@86lenny His murder was never investigated properly. He can not 'rest in peace'. There has been no 'justice'.

HELP ME Guys. PLEASE! I don't remember the name of that guitarist - singer who sang in the memorial of Jimi Hendrix. He obviously sang Drifting and i'm almost sure that there was Steve Vai playing too (and doing solo). Thank to everyone that will help me.
AlexDelPieroAleAle 2 years ago
Well i know Chris Whitley did a version of Drifting, not sure tif thats the version you mean...

Love when Jimi did songs like this, "May this be Love", "One Rainy Wish", "1983, a Merman I should Turn to Be", "Burning of the Midnight Lamp", ect.
Just a fantastic song from an underrated Hendrix album in my opinion.
