Thanks for the little bit of history in the description. I sang this years ago in high school chorus, and I loved it but knew very little about it. The version we sang was very similar to this.
They make it sound almost cheerful, I heard this at Outdoor School and it was the saddest song ever. Not because of the lyrics but by the way the people sang it to me. For some reason it made me homesick, and when I was back home it made me want to be back at Outdoor School again.
Great rendition, with full harmonies and haunting whistling. I just uploaded my own rendition as well. Good to see the folk process is still alive and well.
Nice song and performance. Anyone knows the tabs/chords for "The Dublin saunter" (also known as Dublin can be heaven) by the same composer? Thanks. Greetings from Portugal
Sorry about that, Dragon. We had no control over the video shooting. If you look at the liner notes for the song, you'll see we're The Chilly Winds, a semi-pro folk group from around the U.S. There are links in the notes to some of our other websites.
Great song! I'm singing this in my singing lessons but i forgot the tune because i had never heard it before, so i had to go onto youtube to find someone singing it so i could rememeber it and i founf yours! Thanks, now i rememeber it so now i can sing it to my mum and dad!
anybody know of a song about a gypsy and a settled girl who fell in love and they used to meet at a river, but then the father finds out and stops them an then the girl kills herself, and then the traveler kills himself after to be with her? have no idea what its called, who sang it, or any of the lines in the song.lookin for it for months now , its doin me head in!
I definitely like the Clancy Brothers version the best (but I suppose I'm a bit biased, since I've heard that version since I was probably 6) But thanks for posting the video! It's great to hear the song at the very least
Odd couple of comments, DQFG. However, in case the first was serious - I write the notes for all Chilly Winds videos, including the rather longer ones on "Tom Dooley" and "Country Roads." As to the second....I need say no more than that I took a look at the DQFG page...interesting...

Nice! This song is still sung by traveling troubadors. If you catch him, Darrell Keigan's (Cape Breton, NS) solo version is pristine.
