I use the pinky as well. But in that case of using the pinky, it's really down to the cords you are using. once you can pick with all fingers including the pinky without any training, you can let your fingers do all the work. meaning that it may be more comfortable for you to hit that last string with your pinky on a certain chord Vs. another chord you may use a different finger even if it doesn't make any sense. Your hand basically does what it wants at that point.
@seisner1 don't worry about his nails. You should definitely grow your nails out, always file them down so they're nice and curved (there are plenty of picture tutorials on what shape to keep your nails in on google) so that your flesh and nail will pluck the string together and create a nice mellow tone, not too sharp, and not to muddled.
