This performance was shown on the beeb in the early 60's. It stood out then, as it stands out now, one of the most powerful and passionate performances of the last half century, or so
This a sick song. "There's a battle outside and it's raging. It will soon shake you windows and rattle your walls....Mothers and fathers throughout the land...your sons and your daughters are beyond your command. Your road is rapidly aging." Not only does this stink of anarchy, but it's disrespectful to parents who the song basically tells to let their brats be rebellious.
@Sistarovat yes, is disrespectful. Now kids are brats, rebellious and atheist. But parents in the 50s were very oppressive, abusive and violent toward their children.
@Sistarovat While I can certainly understand your feelings concerning the lyrics to this song and not knowing your age (not listed on your profile page) one must realize the context of the time it was presented. President Kennedy had been assassinated, the Vietnam war was raging and the country was split and I imagine some families were split as well and to try and tell you the history of that time period would require pages.
it is an awesome piece of film. I almost always get chills when Mary sings. Her passion is just beyond. but this clip from Newport - with the wind kicking up during her solo and the lyrics - amazing moment.
@gypsydog24 It was more the time & atmosphere that let true voices be heard.Today is all sound bytes,Tweeters,blogs,1 line jokes & cellphones ringing while you stand on the edge of the Grand Canyon or in a redwood forest without it effecting our polluted ears. Its why I still haven't bought a cellphone & livein a small village where everyone knows each other.
@davidnewman51 Steve Jobs stayed home for the next few days, blinds drawn, his answering machine on, seeing only his girlfriend, Tina Redse. For hours on end he sat there playing his Bob Dylan tapes, especially “The Times They Are a-Changin.’” He had recited the second verse the day he unveiled the
Macintosh to the Apple shareholders sixteen months earlier. That verse ended nicely: “For the loser now / Will be later to win. . . .”

Songs of protest sung at a time of uncertainty and change,if we only had people of this calibre today.

Does anyone know when and where this was taped? Seems like an outdoor venue somewhere.

Gosh. I feel rather silly.
I have no idea where this was recorded even though I have it and uploaded it.
If anyone knows you are welcome to let us know; I am curious myself.
