When I was in Hawai'i there were people who were pushing to have Native American status given to the decendants of Native Hawai'ians. I thought the point of that was for tax exemption status.
The native popultion of hawaiian is so insainly tiny, it just makes no sense what so ever to give it back, anymore then it makes any sense to give the whole of america back to an itty bitty tiny group of indians sitting around sniffing glue all day. Hawai`i does not need to secede from the USA, because it was never legally part of the USA. According to the US constitution, to acquire foreign land, there must be a treaty. FACT - No such treaty was ever passed in the USA to acquire Hawai`i legally.
@koanifoundation right or wrong ..legal or illegal... the fact is that Hawaii is a part of the USA and it's going to stay that way... trust me..no one in Washington takes you seriously..the only way Hawaii could ever become it's own nation state is if there was a coup d'etat.. and seeing as there is no national Hawaiian military, nor significant civilian support for such action it's an outlandish pipe dream to believe that government control will ever be handed over to a tribal leadership..

@koanifoundation that's just your perspective..one could also make the analogy that it is like a farmer finding a stray sheep before the pack of wolves did... while I respect your efforts to give a voice to the native peoples and protect the natural environment, I think it is irrational for you to believe that Hawaii would be better off without the political and economic stability of being a part of one of the most democratic and wealthiest nations in the world...

But I'm not commenting today to argue which faction is right or wrong, what I am doing is saying mahalo for bringing forward an excellent point, and one I believe a lot of people need to step back to the full picture and see.
