this video sure is dated. i'm sure you could find condescension with liberals and conservatives and anyone else. i don't think of liberalism as inherently condescending.
One thing for sure, George Will is not a visionary. Hillary Clinton leading foreign policy, and unemployment at over 9%. It should be apparent that if the American people think that there is a recession then damn it there is going to be a recession, because the market is driven by perception.
My point is that these terms, in the manner George is using them, actually have quantifiable parameters. In short, once you do a bit of reading, it's clear that George was and is still right: Though the recovery is problem-stricken, the recession has been long over.
@RavingDissension "Americans have never been more prosperous and felt more precarious" The classic definition of a recession being 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth is too narrow a definition. If growth in GNP does not exceed the growth in population it is possible to have a growing economy and a declining standard of living. During the Bush era wages remained flat while GNP rose only marginally, what little growth there was did not find its way into the pockets of the Average American.
Output did grow under Bush, but at historic levels. The reason it seemed paltry is due to the prosperous decade that proceeded it: In the 1990's, the U.S. economy, spurred by a tech boom, saw rapid increases in productivity and no inflation. That's a rarity, not a commonality. But, on the larger issue of Bush's economic policy, you do have a point. Some of the Bush era tax cuts were unnecessary and Greenspan's devaluation of the dollar yielded little benefit.
@RavingDissension In the 32 quarter under Bush the nominal GNP growth was less than 1% in 9 of them. 4 quarters showed negative growth. The highest growth of 2.24% occurred in Q3 2003. Only 3 quarters exceeded 2%. I will send you the URL for my data and direct your attention to the Carter years for an example of growth at historic levels.
There are several problems with your data. Nominal output only provides a cursory overview; it is far from conclusive. Any economist will tell you that economic growth is measured by changes in real GDP, not nominal. Nominal does not adjust for inflation, meaning that even if production stagnates while prices soar, the nominal GDP will portray a static economy as a growing one. Of course, for the sake of argument, we're assuming GDP and GNP are relatively one and the same.
@RavingDissension This opens up a whole other can of worms. The CPI that the BLS uses is a slanted statistic that has no relation to the real world. Some times I think that their basket of goods is a can of subsidized corn, section 8 housing, and a candy bar. Meanwhile in my world the cost of a tank of gas or some fish and chips at the local stand are going up like a sky rocket.
Theoretically real GNP and Adjusted GNP should be very close as putative inflation has been very low. LMFAO
Citing nominal GDP might work in times of low inflation; however, the period of which you specifically cited date for, the Carter administration, was plagued with inflation. Remember stagflation, the nightmare of the Keynesians? Who can forget?
And you're telling me that all those price level increases have to counted as growth? I don't think even you believe that.
Moreover, the historical growth rate of the U.S., as most economists hold it, is about 2-3% increase in real GDP per year (not quarter). If you calculate the Bush years (4Q of X year - 4Q of previous year)/(4Q of previous year), you find that the growth rates fluctuated around this range.
@RavingDissension Quite succinctly George Will is out of touch with the common working American. Growth is significantly better under President Obama, but at what cost? A healthy economy revolves around money shifting back and forth between the entrepreneur class and labor, but the Bush tax cuts have removed any incentive to re-capitalize businesses. Why grow a business when there is an oligarchy of corporations and no competition? The stimulus should have been financed with taxes not borrowing.
Growth is better under Obama? Obama gained temporary boosts in GDP and employment by propping up government jobs and pet projects. All the while, his stimulus transferred half a trillion from the private sector, and many economists argue that this is a crucial factor in the sluggish recovery. A healthy economy revolves around productivity, and productivity is optimized by the decentralized interactions of households and firms.
@RavingDissension That is true, the velocity of household spending is more than any bureaucracy could hope to match. Unfortunately the transfer did not come from the private sector, it came from Chinese and Arab dollar reserves through treasury bonds. I've said this many times high taxes promote capitalization in the short run because you either pay the taxes or look for deductions. In the long run they are bad because who wants to invest in an economy where you can't make a profit.
Higher taxes and higher spending in a time of recession is cognitive dissonance. On one end, you siphon money out of the market, thereby diminishing the consumption function and investment component of GDP. On the flip side, the increased expenditures, assuming it is highly effective, would boost GDP; however, the exact amount needed to offset the contractionary tax policy would mean that spending on just the stimulus would have to be in the trillions! Clearly unfeasible.
Lastly, I'm curious: What's your take on monetary policy? While your policy would devastate the economy on the fiscal front, what do you think the interest rates should be?
George's Will should not be allowed any more forums in the media. He championed propoganda like Salman Pak, Iraq in 2002/2003 to help catapult the march to an uneccessary war. He should be there on the frontline somewhere staring down tribesmen with Kalishnakovs. Alas, that would be a different world indeed. Imagine.

Why do Republicans refuse to acknowledge the seriousness of poverty in America. Things are pretty desperate out there. Child poverty rose significantly in the Bush years. George Will is out of touch.
Americans idea of poverty is considered upper middle class or higher in some countries. Poverty in America is a person that doesn't go hungry, has a home to live in with tv, pc, and air conditioning. Poverty in other countries eat dirt cookies, there's a huge difference.

Will is great. However he must understand the American political economy appears as a Ponzi scheme to most people. Real wage increases over the past 20 years are zero. Yes people live longer but the Federal debt will require monetization/high inflation/high interest rates. I respect Will's intellect but the American political class suffers from pure delusion. Awful times ahead unless we can fundamentally change. There are solutions but to simply disdain Fox or MSNBC is on the pre-school level.

Well, Democracy in the United States was fun while it lasted. Now it's time to live in a country where WE THE PEOPLE no longer have a say in who gets elected to REPRESENT.
United States post FEC v. Citizens United = Not A Democracy. Throw your little $20 campaign contributions away - they don't matter.
I too am a radical leftist, but one has to respect Will's raw intellect. Rush Limbaugh debating George Will would certainly be a laughable event, at best.
Not sure about Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, but Neil Peart would probably shake hands and have a beer with George Will considering his political beliefs.
Rush Limbaugh would be in a debate for two minutes with George Will before cutting off his mike and yelling like an idiot about how much of a lefty "loon" George Will is. Even though half of his own listeners (the other half are too stupid and brainwashed to tell the difference) would be saying that he got owned.
I want politicians like George Will. He is so intelligent. People like Hannity, Beck, and many progressives are so annoying. They have a few talking points that they recite over and over. George Will thinks. You can tell he thinks and reads by hearing him talk. Beck and Hannity say they read 3-5 books every week. I seriously doubt that.
I'm a liberal, but I like George Will. He's so intelligent, and I agree with about everything he said, except when he implied that the US economic prosperity has lifted all boats equally. It's true that we are often too whiney (myself definitely included). But by that same token, that doesn't mean that every who complains has no legitimate gripe -- many do, such as the underclass who get poor schools generationally, those who through no fault of their own born into poverty which perpetuates.
i didnt mean to give you a thumbsdown...i clicked the wrong button...i know why you like him...he is a realist...he understands peoples reasonings and motivations...it sounds like you do as well

George Will loves George Will and jerks off to George Will. He defends nonproliferation to the extent of finger-pointing toward Iran, while at the same time claiming (at the time of this interview) the the US is not in recession. That's a lot of diverse territory that is not linked, despite how Georgie might wish to frame it. Do thinking folk really listen to this lacky and think, 'yeah, he's on to something'?
I couldn't agree more. Republicans should look more to intellectuals like George Will and the late William F. Buckley than ignorant blowhards like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Ann Coulter.
I think it's going to take another destruction in a general election for the Republicans to get it through there heads. They think they lost this time around because they put up a moderate in McCain. So in 2012 they'll probably turn hard right and nominate someone like Sarah Palin. Get killed, and by 2016 come to the realization that their aren't enough religious bigots for them to keep winning elections anymore. However, I do very much like Mike Huckabee.
Yeah, they probably won't learn any time soon. There was a poll that apparently asked registered Republicans whether the party should be more or less like Sarah Palin, and lo and behold, they said they should be more like her. So I guess there's no "Hope" that the Republicans will "Change" any time soon. And yeah, Huckabee's a good guy, at least on a personal level.
You'll notice on a lot of his videos here on youtube, Liberals will comment saying that they're devout Leftists, but they really like Huckabee. I've never seen that before in my life!
I think with his level of charisma and great communication skills, he can beat Obama in 2012. In fact, I think he's the only 1 who can. social conservatism aside, he has a deep understanding of market principles, and is the only Republican candidate who supports the FairTax. That says a lot about his intellect.
@TimeWarp66 I feel exactly the same way. There is no doubt that characters like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Rupert Murdoch have done more to attack and defame the conservative tradition in America than the progressives ever could have, maybe purposely?
Of course he can't bring himself to say anything positive about Clinton. If Bill Clinton won a 2 car race, Will would say he finished second from last.
I usually like George Will, but he was dead wrong here...the fact of the matter is that the average American HAS NOT seen an increase of wealth during the Bush administration: wages have been either flattened or decreased. George Will wouldn't understand this because he likely makes more than the average American
Did you factor in benefits which have been rising? Are you measuring the individual and not the "family" income? Are you including increases in technology and industry? We have a vaccine for cervical cancer, we have faster internet service, better cell phones, etc.
I'm not sure when this interview took place. However, in October of 2008 I have a question for Mr. Will. Mr. Will, are we in a recession yet? I'll be watching for your next interview.
From one of the "cry babies of the western world."
This was an older interview and Will was right that we were not in a recession by definition. He wasn't wrong just because we are in one right now. If he said we will never be in one, then he would indeed be incorrect. Will is also correct that Americans have a very low pain threshold-we are so used to being on top, getting everything we want right away, and we freak out when there is a slight dip in the economy. This is a MAJOR dip, yes, but we need to go through some pain to get back on top.
Professor Will is the guy who, when Reagan met Gorbachev in Iceland, announced that the West had lost the Cold War. This, only a few years before the USSR collapsed! Will is just another right-wing alarmist chickenhawk HACK. Whether it's politics, war or baseball, he loves to talk about things he has no personal experience of.
The Saturday Night Live Weekend Update reported that erecting windmills across the United States would be a very good energy strategy because domestic windmills would greatly reduce our energy dependence on FOREIGN wind (as opposed to foreign oil).
He doesn't seems to be that intelligent. Like rw5791 said starbucks theory works in reverse, the UK found that out in the run up to ww1. "crybabies of the western world", "globalization does not undermine individual security", i guess the world really is flat.
blacklocust - "End the liberal madness", and here I thought it had been neo conservative republicanism that had brought us into the demise of the Constitution. End the madness? Yes, let's. Remove Lobbyists from Washington. Forbid elected officials from taking money from special interests. End black budgets. Oh, and then impeach Cheney and Bush. Then, and only then will we actually End The Madness!
I'm in agreement with everything you have said, but an impeachment is not the answer, we have an election this November, protection American jobs, moving manufacturing back to our nation, and consolidating our industrial resources is the answer.
starbucks theory works in reverse.China is changing america and they will finish the job on nov.4.This is completely lost on george will, the proto-typical check-pant republican.
We need to level the playing field across the world, nations who employ slave labor, and prison labor in mass to dump cheap products on our market must end. The answer is American industries, thinking about what Americans need, ending corporate welfare, and deportation through attrition, decreasing immigration from non-western nations, and repatriating those who are already here.
I'm looking for that George Will video from 1990 where he scoffs that the comment from a black historian that Bach and Beetoven were really black people and not white.
I know he didn't but just because someone doesn't suck up to the electorate shouldn't cause people not to vote for them. Earning the college educated vote shouldn't be embarrassing.
America has lost it's leadership under the rule of conservatives. Prosperity is relative George. Americans have never been relatively LESS prosperous that's why they are anxious closing in on 500 million people have a higher GDP per capita (Eurozone*+ Scandinavia** +UK+Swiss+Canada+Australia).
actually, under President Bush, America has experienced the strongest economy in all of world history, much to the disappointment of America-hating socialists like jpbalkendende

actually, America's economy under our great President Bush is the strongest economy in all of human history, much to the disappointment of America-hating socialists. naturally nubbs the America-hating socialist hates China's growing free-market capitalism and economic prosperity
Ha... no. Actually, anybody who refers to ol' Jeedubya as "Our great President Bush" needs some sort of psychiatric evaluation. George Bush is a TERRIBLE president, quite possibly (and likely) the worst in American history.
anybody who refers to our great President Bush as Dubya needs sensitivity training, to be taught to not be such a bigot against Southern Whites. President Bush is a FANTASTIC President, quite possibly the greatest American President ever. weirdo593 is a TERRIBLE youTube participant, the worst in youTube history
The fact that a.) you call me gay b.) you resort to such childish insults c.) you support George Bush all proves that your IQ cannot possibly be above 80. Thank you for your time.
the fact that weirdo593 the childish gay homo does not appreciate the greatness of our great President Bush, shows that weirdo593 has an IQ below eighty
Nubbs will probably never be invited onto The Charlie Rose Show to pontificate on the important matters in life but he is more than qualified to sit in on Keith Olbermann's show. Or Al Franken's, if Franken goes back to doing radio.
I respect George Will's opinion, but I think the American people are far more moderate than he gives them credit for. Despite his rosy view of the Bush economy, there is real pain felt by the many left behind in debt and record prices. And despite his assumed anti-trade overreaction, the american people know the value of free trade but also believe in moderation. Doom-and-gloom conservatives who preach the end will come every-time a democrat holds office should give moderation a chance.
1. you are being redundant. if they are already conservative, then they already heed his conservative talking points. what you should say is that you hope any non conservative heeds his wise words
2. what kind of heeding, exactly, do you have in mind? are conservatives supposed to listen to will talk about the wonders of the free market and then go out and kill a government regulator or something? he isnt exactly proffering a clarion call to action.
And no, not all conservatives are the same. Pat Buchanan is not a free market conservative, nor are Phyllis Schlafly. Not all conservatives think the war in Iraq was a mistake, either, as Will does.
I watched his entire interview, and his comments about teacher's unions were spot on. His lack of faith in the big government programs of FDR and LBJ and George W. Bush is spot on, too.
doug McIntyre is not a conservative. he claims he is, yet consistently denounces conservatives and their positions, while expressing his approval for liberals and their positions. doug mcIntyre is an America-hating socialist with a mean temper who screams to shut up the conservative opposition
I'd rather believe George Will doesn't wear a rug than oppose the Second Amendment, support a government takeover of health care, let teachers unions continue to ruin our public ed system, have faith in high taxation and endless government programs, et al.
To answer another of your questions, the national debt is about $9.6 trillion. All the more reason to cut government spending and reform entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security. We could start by abolishing the IRS & NEA.
All taxes except a national sales tax should be declared unconstitutional. All education should be privatized and voluntary. America needs to destroy the islamofascists once and for all. any American with a working brain and intact values will vote for John McCain in November

I too am a radical leftist, but one has to respect Will's raw intellect. Rush Limbaugh debating George Will would certainly be a laughable event, at best.
TheFifteenthStep 2 years ago
@jfulbright

George Will is a boss. It's people like him who should be representing modern conservatism, not Rush Limbaugh.

I couldn't agree more. Republicans should look more to intellectuals like George Will and the late William F. Buckley than ignorant blowhards like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Ann Coulter.
Geinmachine 3 years ago
I think it's going to take another destruction in a general election for the Republicans to get it through there heads. They think they lost this time around because they put up a moderate in McCain. So in 2012 they'll probably turn hard right and nominate someone like Sarah Palin. Get killed, and by 2016 come to the realization that their aren't enough religious bigots for them to keep winning elections anymore. However, I do very much like Mike Huckabee.
TimeWarp66 3 years ago 2
Yeah, they probably won't learn any time soon. There was a poll that apparently asked registered Republicans whether the party should be more or less like Sarah Palin, and lo and behold, they said they should be more like her. So I guess there's no "Hope" that the Republicans will "Change" any time soon. And yeah, Huckabee's a good guy, at least on a personal level.
Geinmachine 3 years ago 2
You'll notice on a lot of his videos here on youtube, Liberals will comment saying that they're devout Leftists, but they really like Huckabee. I've never seen that before in my life!
I think with his level of charisma and great communication skills, he can beat Obama in 2012. In fact, I think he's the only 1 who can. social conservatism aside, he has a deep understanding of market principles, and is the only Republican candidate who supports the FairTax. That says a lot about his intellect.

Its refreshing to see people that share the same views of Mike Huckabee that I do. There are many candidates that I'm simply sick of hearing about.

I usually like George Will, but he was dead wrong here...the fact of the matter is that the average American HAS NOT seen an increase of wealth during the Bush administration: wages have been either flattened or decreased. I'm not sure when this interview took place. However, in October of 2008 I have a question for Mr. Will. Mr. Will, are we in a recession yet? I'll be watching for your next interview.
From one of the "cry babies of the western world."
snooks73 3 years ago
This was an older interview and Will was right that we were not in a recession by definition. He wasn't wrong just because we are in one right now. If he said we will never be in one, then he would indeed be incorrect. Will is also correct that Americans have a very low pain threshold-we are so used to being on top, getting everything we want right away, and we freak out when there is a slight dip in the economy. This is a MAJOR dip, yes, but we need to go through some pain to get back on top.
