I live in the Adirondacks and I agree with his first statement. Best part is at dusk can't wait till the come back to the area after the snow is gone.
i live on a lake in MN and in the summer they go crazy at night and early in the morning sometimes to there soo cool to here.....i love waking up to it and falling a sleep to it
Minnesota born and raised, currently in a southern Illinois hotel. Traveled all over the states for work and after seeing all America has to offer, nothing comes close, not by a long shot, of sitting by a glass calm northern lake, by the fire with crickets and frogs singing, and hearing the chilling but beautiful choir of the loons. Always loved the loons but never realizied how much I miss them until i'm far away from them.
Family Guy and the Loon ... that was a great episode but i have herd this Loon before and never knew what it was till i was watching Family guy and they said Loon i was like so that's what makes that sound i always loved it so much i always herd that loon sound on a commercial for a camping trip or something so how do you look up something that don't even know what kinda animal makes that sound how do u google that lol so family guy did help me on that part as of the name of the animal
The video didn't have another call Loons can make, it sounds crazy! It would wake you up at night because it sounded like the Loon was getting attacked or something.
@thestarwarsfan12345 i knew the sound of them since i was little there so pretty but never knew the animal that made them till i watched FG then i could look them up lol
Haha seems like Family Guy is kinda the place where a lot of people find stuff like this... Cuz that's where I got this... And i have a question is the Loons in Washington State?
@littlejapan3 OMG same here dude! I actually always loved this bird call but never knew what it's called! It was like an epiphany when Family Guy mentioned it. Thank you Family Guy!
I remember being in Algonquin Park, it was dead of night, I was on a pebble beach, and the Aurora Borealis started. Some loons started calling (in response?). It was truly surreal.
Nothing like the loon call. My grandparents' cabin on a lake in MT was a frequent vacation spot for family. We always heard the loons at dusk and at dawn. I now listen to a CD of nature sounds including loon calls sometimes when I'm going to sleep. The loon calls take me right back to that wonderful lake and cabin and the surrounding woods.
I heard my first loon call at a friend's cabin during summer about five years ago in eastern Manitoba. I will never forget that sound. It seems like they're the wolves of the bird world. Obviously not for habits and actions but just for that haunting call.
Somehow loons seem the wisest of all creatures. They seem to sense when i am nervous or scared, by myself in my cottage during an august night. As I lay under the covers with a book, I suddenly hear them, there blood curdling call saying:"i'm here, don't worry, your'e not alone" Then I feel at peace. The next morning I wake up and I see a loon peacefully floating really close to my dock, and I wonder if it's been there all night. With me, until the sun's rays come out and I don't feel so alone..
Loons are so cool! I remember being up in Wisconsin and I saw a Loon dive under the water, surface twenty feet away, and scared a flock of ducklings. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen!
I have to say.. I live in Ontario, Canada and everytime I am camping and hear the calls of the loon, it tears me up in a way I wanna cry.. their call is just so haunting and beautiful!
You look to the lambent, glowing stars in the cerulean sky, and then back to their shimmering reflection on the lake before you. A dark silhouette drifts across the water, leaving a rippling wake on the still surface. A wailing, mournful cry suddenly resonates through the mountains. It echoes through the night, a voice to the souls pure of heart.
The first time i heard this amazing bird was in Boom Lake in Banff National Park. Since then i fell in love with it. I cant describe what it makes me feel, im in love with nature and this sound is just like a kiss to my ears =)

We just got back from the Chippewa State Forrest in Crosslake MN. Our final morning, Sunday, we were treated to just those very sounds for a good 1/2 hour. Those loons made up for all 10,000 mosquito bites I received during our 5 day trip. :)
@sammelina12 they winter in the Gulf so yes they are in a great deal of danger! While some seem to be returning we have no idea what effect the polluted water will have on the health of these birds over the course of the next few years.
