why did you cut it off at the end??? hop sing was about to catch a beatin off those 4 guys, like he did every time he went into virginia city. you skipped the best part.
Not the best interpretation of a Chinese American but one made with affection. It seems Asians were the only minority that didn't get pissed when tv made them look goofy (see Get Smart, Wild Wild West, many cartoons of the era, etc).
Victor Sen Yung also played "Jimmy" in "Charlie Chan in Reno". He spoke English before he learned Chinese. His IMDB bio says that he was placed in an orphanage when he was 4 and his father returned from china when he was nine and then taught him Chinese. This fake Chines accent, simpleton act must have grated on his nerves.
op yeah, some of the Bonanzas were very dramatic and serious and some were hilarious, my favorite ones, of course were the funny ones, the one I remember most was "The Burma Rarity" with Arnold Stang(Top Cat) I loved Hop Sing, Victor Sen Yung was a great actor, I love to catch him in the old reruns of different shows "Hey, thats Victor Sen Yung" Kung Fu, Mr Ed, Here's Lucy or The Lucy Show, I wonder if that's why James Hong called "Cartwright" instead of "Costanza" in that Seinfeld episode?
the sage of annie o' toole... the rescue...the fear merchants,..... i think enter mark twain....and the one with the donut cant remember...lol....hope this helps...
This was great Your right Hop Sing wa a member of the family/ Remember in Mark of Guilt when he saved Little Joe from Jail? After those men cut his ponytail off and Little Joe went after them.
Nice to see a tribute to Hop Sing - he was such a great character. I'd love to know what some of his Chinese "mutterings" actually said. Thanks for posting.
I understood the gist of the Cantonese that Hop Sing was saying in that clip!
From 2:11-2:13, as he's closing the door, he was definitely saying "Working from sunrise, working til nightfall!"
Afterwards, the gist of what he's saying (if I understand correctly) is, "and then these moments where I have to deal with these added hassles" or "this added craziness" or "this added foolishness", etc.
As an aside, I actually watched my very 1st Bonanza episode a week ago as part of some Film, TV, & Society class @ university ("The Fear Merchants", where Hop Sing gets beaten up in Virginia City, & his cousin, Jimmy Chang, is accused of a murder he didn't commit)! Afterwards, I did some YouTube checking, then I stumbled onto this vid!
I'm glad that you enjoyed your 1st Bonanza. I hope you'll watch more - there are some really great episodes. If you like the ones with a Chinese element, try 'Day of the Dragon' and 'A Pink Cloud Comes from Old Cathay'. 'San Francisco Holiday' also featuires Hop Sing and his cousins quite a bit. Enjoy!!

Hop Sing was not speaking Cantonese. He was speaking Toisanese. Most of the early chinese migrant workers were from the region of Toisan.

It wasn't until recently I learned Hop Sing and Jimmy Chan (Charlie Chan's #2 son) were the same person. Victor was very good looking in his 20s.
