god next to him is this man and his voice im not that musical but im told when im on key and at my best im a semi-barratone not quite sure what that is but i do atempt this song probly badly but this is pure gold dust thank you for poting.
I am a 60+ white guy, fortunate to have been raised "color blind" & to have listened to Paul since the 50s. Paul's lyric version "Old Man River" was the first song I sang as a performance. The music of his many songs speaks volumes about dealing with adversity.
Be it slave masters, weather, cancer, or any other source, there are things outside of our control. The character of his music fits with the saying:
Pain and suffering are inevitable; misery is optional
@MySerpentine And if that's not one of the biggest travesties and show of the ever-lasting stupidity of our age, even after so much "progress," I don't know what is.
But he's survived by his great work, so perhaps one day the world will awake from its bigotted slumber to rediscover this gem of a performer...
And really, this song could almost be said to be autobiographical of the man, this and "Ol' Man River," because Robeson, despite the slings and arrowsm "Just keeps rollin' along." RIP
Paul Robeson, who spoke twenty languages, who was the first black man to recieve a law degree from an ivey league university, an all american football player and a shakespearen acteor, has been burried alive, deleated from history for his political beliefs. That's why you've never heard of him.
@MySerpentine Perhaps the last couple of generations have never heard of him, but I was playing his records in the late 30s on a wind up gramophone. Saw him in a film in which he played a coal miner in a Welsh village, and his rendition of 'All through the night' is the best I ever heard.
I have a large family, and while my grandkids may not be fans of Paul Robeson, they most certainly have heard of him. Nothing can bury or delete from history his great personality or his magnificent voice.
@kwgrid My Dad tells me this song was written with Paul Robeson in mind. I don't know the facts, but it flows so perfectly from his mouth, it's easy to believe.
This is the BEST interpretation of this beautiful spiritual song, and this come from a person that was born and raised in South America that has no connection with this type of music. But beautiful music has no boundries and What a great interpretation! What a great voice!.... Thank you for this video.
Meaningful, beautiful intonation and enunciation of Mr. Robeson imbues this song of encouragement and endurance with a solemn, respectful gravity that communicates the internal depth it traverses without overworking the material. Classic. Canon. Perfect. (that said, I could have done w/out the piano, but whatcha gonna do?)
But still it has a little melancholy mood to it... I'm suprised some of you don't understand this. "Nobody knows my sorrow."
I feel like this is a song that greatly reflects the way I feel.. people around me are not aware of what I'm going through and I'm not aware of what kind of trouble they are facing either. It is sad since we feel like we're fighting alone when other people, although they may not be going through the same thing, share the same pain. That is all.
Whenever I'm feeling down, I just plug this into my stereo and jam along with some bluesy trumpet and the whole world brightens up

A genious way ahead of his time, but not even opression and racism made him stop being the brightest star in the clearest sky.

if you ever want to feel grounded again, listen to this song, and understand the solidity and important things in life.

Only watching this because I've seen it sung in a few comics and games and wanted to listen to the full song. Not really what I expected

He has a good voice but it'd be nice to hear it without the annoying vibrato and with a more natural less constipated vocal...
valleyshrew 1 year ago
@valleyshrew Why is his vibrato annoying? I think it's your annoyance, not his.

Even I, who listens to the newest game-electronica music, thinks this is beautiful and real. This is one of the best singers of all time.

No, it's not a downer. It's real life. No need to live in a fantasy, just thank the Lord for the good and the bad!
