Our school did this two years ago for the musical, and this scene somehow never seemed to go right. Without fail, Pirelli's cape would get caught on the cart, the cart would get stuck under the drawbridge (it was too tall for the regular walkway, so we installed a manual drawbridge), One of the Tobys (we doublecasted) would always start singing God That's Good, and our set pieces were never on time. Oh well.
Not to hate but the Toby in the movie is amazing and is really talented.. I have this song memorized from watching it sooo much.. I love it... in this one toby just seems craizy and I'm sorry I don't like that as much as when toby is really smart and has wits to spare...
@Nester211 This Toby was meant to be portrayed as young indeed but prone to madness. Some productions may portray him as having mental issues. At the time, it is difficult to cast young boys into theatre, especially for a significant role like Toby. An older Toby in the play version would be more convincing to build up Toby's insanity by the ending. The Toby in the film version did a lovely job! But the play's emphasis is that Toby drowns into the insanity of the events by the end.
That's Neil Partick Harris is I'm not mistaken. But I'm not sure. Although I think I read somewhere he was in a production of this. Maybe not. Anyone know?
Well... they sung better because they didn't need to sing in a musical and their voices could be edited a little. This is all live and very, very professional.
This version is better than the movie, at least in my opinion, because it's supposed to be Todd and Lovett mocking the hell out of Pirelli and Tobias. Depp and Carter can be deadpan, and while they did a lovely job with such, i believe there is a time and place to be deadpan. Being deadpan in this scene is a gross sin.
Also George was supposed to say. "An arront fraud. Concocted from piss and ink. Love this scene with the contest cuz it's like Pirelli wastes all his time singing and Sweeney's just sharpening his razor, yet Sweeney still wins!! LOL!!
This is added to the phrase below. "Pirelli by name. He gaveme a liquid as precious as gold. I rubbed it in daily like what i was told. And BEHOLD! Less than 30 days old!" That's whats really supposed to be in the part when he says "I was once bald as an egg, but just look at me now! Would you like to know how?"
"Gentlemen you are about to see something what rose from the dead! On the top of me head. Scarcely a month ago gentlemen, i was suddenly srtuck with a rare oriental disease. Though the finest phecisians in London were called i awakened one moring to amazed and appaled to discover with dread that my head was as bald of a novice's knees. I was dying of shame. Till a gentleman came. An illustrious barber, Pirelli by name"
LOVE this part. Especially, "Smells like piss. Looks like piss. This is piss, piss with ink!" HAHA! Sad thing is they took out a line of Toby's...Can't write it though, it's too long for a comment. I'll try though.

One thing I do wish they did on this DVD is the opening with Tobias in a straightjacket....
The choral parts are EPIC. It makes me jealous that I'm not in the ensemble during this show this Halloween instead of Lucy. :D

Errant. And i do realize that the lines were changed. My school has the full score, but i find it the fault of the directors for this omission.
