im an old school boy..here in britain...ive loved what you have done since i was 14 years old....im now 39......just like to say thankyou for all the music and interest in music you personally have given me. you started me on a road of hip hop 20 odd years ago.......then i got into soul etc and rare groove...mr 45 king id just like to say one big thankyou .............feel the love brother
I see he's using mostly original pressings, but I can't tell with the Mohawks piece..it looks like a reissue..? What a mix though, I'm going to borrow bits of this when I'm spinning m' funk 45s as I have most of these joints, except for an original mohawks hahah..that one is ESPENSIVE..hehe but everyone has a reissue at least..Of course probably from Ultimate breaks and beats series.
For those that have never mixed with 45's..it can BE TOUGH! You have to be so light.. he's got big arms too!
Wait..... do you have a third thing playing some of the backing tracks, or does the sound not sync with what you are doing?
For example 1:18 you start a sample on the left deck, whilst playing a James Brown vocal sample on the right. However, when you stop the left deck the riff keeps on playing.
This is just one example, it seems to happen quite a bit throughout the recording.
Or am I being cynical and you are in fact using two copies of the same record? If so its very good well done.
@trnfinger Actually Kool Herc never doubled up breaks (he had djs like Imperial JC, Whiz Kid, Black Jack etc to extend breaks cause he couldn't) , he was like a regular dj who played break records. Flash invented the quick mix (which every hip hop dj after him adopted) although there were earlier djs like Pete Dj Jones who extended breaks using two copies as early as the late 60's (allegedly)
@soulful1illusion @soulful1illusion thanks for update, we recently found out about it, and put interview with Pete DJ Jones on Oldschoolers Crew page few weeks ago. Big up and happy 2012 year
You have to understand what a mixer does between the two turntables how you blend them or cut one or the other in the sound mix. This is the essence of what the Crossfader is used for, to create seamless sound flow, this I'm sure is why you get the impression of the riff that continues, and as mentioned the fact with each sequence for a time, he uses 2 copies of the same record to loop infinite if he chooses by he's doing a timed routine so it's brief. It's all real, he's solid.
@oatstao I understand fully well what a mixer does and that's why I said what I did because I saw what he did was beyond the capabilities of a mixer (that has no loop sampler). As has been said its real and down the a combination of great skill and having two copies of some records.
here is the scoop. The "sample" you say starts at 1:18 is the left deck already playing since 1:16 here's the break down.. I think you are getting confused by seeing his hand cuing the Right side before he engages the fade (HINT He's listening to the cue with headphones before he crosses the fader)
He starts the James Brown @ ....
1:08 Right- 1:16 Left 1:20 back to the right 1:25 Left 1:29 Right 1:34 left..you got it? PEAS AND RICE BABY ;)
@oatstao I understand the mechanics of it. If you read my first post you will see what I am saying is that the only way to acheive that if by having two copies of the same record playing symataniously on each deck but at different positions. As has been confirmed that is preceicely how he is doing it which demonstrates his skill, because no mixer (unless it has a sampler) can do this without doubles.
@DJNation Please dont mistake my comments as critisicm, they are quite the oposite. I was meerly analysing his techique, and praising his work because he's so good at what he does it seems impossible.
Its the same thing as say watching a magician at work with people saying, thats not possible surely, but it is with practice.
how many complaints do you get from people for giving them splinters in their nikes?

his routine sounds like the way he mashes his samples.
It's true reflection of Mark. Thanks for sharing this, better routine than
95% of grown Dj ego's around these parts on the portables and 45s..sublime.

@GBscottieUK as you said - it's called looping using doubles , originated by Kool Herc. 45King in full effect
