  • Once you're in the water, start by holding the bow line (painter) and your

    body will act like a sea anchor and get the bow pointed into the wind for you

    (instead of swimming it around by the dagger board). On a bigger boat in heavy air & rough seas, it's sometimes the only way that reliably works.

    Let the wind do the work for you.

    Of course, it's easier to step over the gunwale an onto the dagger board as the boat is going down & pop it right back up (w/o even getting wet, if done right)
