Great Observation. I sometimes simplify the explanations of my demos to make the concept understandable to people with less scientific understanding, hence your response to me. You have aq greater knowledge.
You have pretty much summed up the answer. Air pressing down upon the newspaper approx A back of the envelope calculation shows that there is about a ton of air pressing down on about 1 square foot of flat surface. Assume that the new2spaper surface is 2 square feet.
I'm suspicious of the idea that air pressure is responsible for breaking the ruler since air pressure on the newspaper is acting in all directions, not simply from above. Perhaps instead the amount of air that needs to be moved when the paper is lifted creates additional work since the newspaper is not very aerodynamic. Either way, I think it would be incredibly interesting to see this done in a vacuum. Doing this under water while changing the water pressure would be interesting too.
Suspicion is a good thing. This is what allows science to move forward. There is a very little air under the newspaper as it is resting atop the table. Consequently there is no equal air pressure on the opposite side of the newspaper. Since there is hardly anything pushing the paper up from underneath, the main force is air pressure from above, which allows the paper to stay flat enough until it breaks.
Just learn the science behind the magic and the rest or your life will be boring. Dont listen to this guy, keep life a mystery as long as possible, stay stupid.
I wonder what kind of position you would have held in ancient Babylon, I have been briefly studying the system back then. It was much more "alchemical". Science and "magic" were indivisible. I remember when I was a kid I read that cup trick in one of your books Bob, and I was mad because we didn't have any plastic cups to waste inside the house. Now I'm finally getting to see it done by the master!
Thanks for the kind words. You have made me realize that too many young people take instructions too literally. The trick can be done with a cardboard or styrofoam (r) cup (though you don't actually see the water in the cup) or a real glass, though you may not be able to drill through the glass. There are always methods of adapting. I will remember this as I write instructions in the future. Thanks for the input.
The video is great, of course. I am a 6th grade science teacher in south Georgia (US). I am wondering how I can take advantage of your expertise? U-Tube is blocked at my school.
I use to do that trick when i took baths as a kid. put the cup under water upside down turn it a little so water enters the cup, pull the cup to the surface so that the rim is just touching the end of the water in the tub. Then the cup would sit half full. I always wondered why the water wouldn't fall. but then i got older.
I enjoyed your video, If you need help getting your video exposed i use a service at Tubeviews . Net They offer views, ratings, and comments. They helped my video get ranked on the first page
Hey, I rmb that trick when you poured the water into that white cup and when you upside down it ,the water had disappear. I also remember that my teacher gave me a kind of chemical that were used in diapers. It's a kind of chemical that absorb water and turned it immediately into a solid. Thanks for your show. I'm not sure whether you did the same thing.
but it isnt a chemical, its just a super absorbent polymer called sodium polyacrylate. it can be used in potting soils to absorb water for the roots to absorb
here it is: you put a chemical in a metal bread pan, put a liquid chemical in it, set it afire, here's some good stuff you can do with it: put any food coloring on it and it will change color, it's very interesting
Wow...Is this really Professor Bob? That is amazing!!! I wish you were around when I was going to school!!! I always explain to my daughter that science is a part of life, and now it is her favourite subject!!!!!!

This is a neat video. I actually found out that water trick on my own when I was younger, just fooling around with holes in the cup. Making people spill over there shirts and I put the paper on and my finger was on the hole, and someone tried to knock the cup out of my hand. It I guess you could say, spun on my finger and turned upside. But it didn't leak. I immediately dropped the cup because I was young and had no idea what I had done. Once again. Nice video.
actually. I'm still not sure I understand it lol. I mean, if your finger's blocking the hole then how is that any different from the hole not even being there?
I love science so much i plan to be a kind of person who researches and figure things out like a scientist but how did u do tht thing where u made the water dissapear from the cup?? btw ur so cool like i can tell u have such a way with kids plus u seem really nice u should come to my school!
Thanks for those nice words and I'm pleased that you are asking for answers. The water never really vanishes. It only looks that way. The water is inside of the cup but has been concealed with a chemical. If you want to know more you will have to go the library and take out some books on magic, chemistry and physics, maybe even some of the books that I have written.

If you keep reading and also checking out cool science videos, your understanding will increase to the point where you will probably be able to make your own cool science vids if you want.
Hi Bob, may I call you Bob? First thing I'd like to do is say thanks for showing to kids how entertaining science can be. Not many people realize that science is the only profit bringing thing. Second thing is, try to show the real side of science, make a wand that works like a Tesla coil (it's up to you to make it effective and miniature) or that destroys walls with the help of a resonance. That would be a hell of a "magic", would it not?
The egg trick is a demonstration of Isaac Newton's 1st law of motion. The egg, being massive (you can call it heavier) than the cardboard tube, is more difficult to get moving than the lighter weight tube, tends to stay in the same place. When the tube is knowcked out of the way, the only force acting on the gg is gravity, which makes it fall into the cup of water.
Sorry that you feel that way about your science teacher is who is probably working to the best of his/her abiity. Try to learn the science despite the teacher. It (science) can be so rewarding and so much fun despite a teacher you many not care for.
hello there, can you help me at my physics project. i need to demonstrate at least 1 magic at school. if you can give me some procedures, i'll be so grateful.. ;) or just sites that offers magic experiments. i hope you can help me..this video is so awesome, i love physics .. including all those computations..wuhoo.. ;) i'm so intrested at science..
I am leaving the country shortly and my time is limited. Please answer ASAP so I have a few days to come up with a proper response.
I am willing to help point you in the right direction. If you can get to a public library try to find one of my books. If you can not what are of physics do you wish to include? air pressure, center of mass/gravity, electro magnetism, properties of matter, optics, sound, or ...? What level of physics? High School or college?
There are a lot of reasons to like science. Not everyone likes it "because they get to light things on fire," there are other reasons. But, if that's your reason , please try to be safe.
This is wonderful. The spirit of science lives. You give me hope that my program is a success. Experiment away. You are testing a hypothesis to see if it will give the answer you seek. Please tell us your results.
There are so many areas that compete for the attention of children (adults too). I am pleased that I can bring the wonders of science to all in an interesting manner.
I'd like to know how you made the water dissapear from the cup. But a great video and very educational for the kids while at the same time fun for them.
Thanks for the kind words to you and everyone else who has responded. Wolfrevan, why don't you drop me an e-mail with wolfrevan in the subject line and perhaps we will chat about the effect.
Thanks for asking. The trick in magic catalogs is called an appearing cane and may be purchased from magic stores for anywhere between $50 to $75 for a good metal cane. The platisc ones do not work well. I can't tell you the secret behind the trick but will say that the trick works because of the scientific principles of potential and kinetic energy, plus lots of practice. Thanks

That would be a hell of a "magic", would it not?

i did not really get the egg one
lordford6 4 years ago
The egg trick is a demonstration of Isaac Newton's 1st law of motion. The egg, being massive (you can call it heavier) than the cardboard tube, is more difficult to get moving than the lighter weight tube, tends to stay in the same place. When the tube is knowcked out of the way, the only force acting on the gg is gravity, which makes it fall into the cup of water.
I hope this helps

Man if you were my teacher i would love science but i have an idiot teacher and i dont understand a think:(
paokole666 4 years ago
Hi
Sorry that you feel that way about your science teacher is who is probably working to the best of his/her abiity. Try to learn the science despite the teacher. It (science) can be so rewarding and so much fun despite a teacher you many not care for.

High School or college?

science is fun most ppl like because they get to light things on fire i like it for everything!
flamed112 4 years ago 5
There are a lot of reasons to like science. Not everyone likes it "because they get to light things on fire," there are other reasons. But, if that's your reason , please try to be safe.

this is great but i will go test his theory about the cup right now

This is wonderful. The spirit of science lives. You give me hope that my program is a success. Experiment away. You are testing a hypothesis to see if it will give the answer you seek. Please tell us your results.

Thanks

man my college has stupid ass teachers... i love experiments like these.
inad316 4 years ago
They were probably not stupid. Probably good physicists, just poor teachers. Thanks for the sentiment.
