Chuck Berry didn't get arrested for tax evasion in the fifties. It was for transporting a minor across state lines. He got busted for tax evasion in the eighties.
Good catch. Surprised nobody caught this mistake before. That crazy Chuck Berry! I'm sure he was transporting a minor across state lines to help her in some way, and not for anything immoral.
I'm not into the rockabilly scene, but I really dig vintage ca. 30s - early 60s. 99% of my wardrobe is vintage. I have a vintage gabardine(pre-Dupont fire) addiction/obsession.
yeah but in 1978 they were not the stray cats but the tom cats, they later called them self the stray cats after there big hit in england, where they wrote runaway boys.
This guy must be just like me because I have an old wedding photo of a couple that looks circa 1945 or so. I had it on my desk before I left my job and people thought I was weird when they asked if those were my grandparents and I said I have no idea who they are, I just like the photo and vintage frame.
I have a HUGE collection of antigue photos, and I get that "are those relatives" line all the time. It's nice to know that there are more of us out there. :)
Wonder why he goes from the rockabilly of the '50s and skips to the early '80s Stray Cat era rockabilly but doesn't mention the late '70s UK rockabilly explosion with the Rockats and The Polecats and so forth. Didn't those bands start about 1978 or so? Also the Stray Cats started in about 1978 or so too?
Ken did in fact go into greater detail. The interview by himself logged in at a little over an hour so there is a lot of stuff edited out for the sake of making a ten minute video.
Yeah but he wasn't just saying who was big in the rockabilly scene; he was saying what rockabilly was big in the world scene. The Stray Cats were really the next big thing as far as open the eyes of the world to the scene.
I'm only 14 and I love this stuff. I play guitars from the 50's and collect those old records. Is there a single person in East Texas that's into rockabilly and old stuff??? I hate being that wierd kid that is the only person in school that likes rockabilly and blues....
I have a silly question.... I'm black and I love the rockabilly lifestyle. I wrench my own bike etc. I never feel apart of it even though blacks we're the originators of rock n roll. Do greasers/ rockabilies/ Psychobilly folk like black people?? I always assume they don't. Because they act like I'm not supposed to be there. Please be honest.
im a rockabilly from germany and spent the whole last year in the us an had a lot of black friends and i still do. i also to a lot of what you would consider black music like blues and jazz and funk etc.
Rockabilly was alive and kickin gin the UK before the Stray Cats!!! There were groups like the Jets,Polecats, fab band called the Deltas and the Stargazers!!. The likes of johnny Burnette, charlie Feathers,Johhny powers,Sammy masters,Harry Carter,Lonnie Barron, the Jiants etc were what Rockabilly was all about to me.
He gives the Stray Cats credit for the rockabilly revival of the 80s but the rockabilly revival was HUGE in the UK back in '76 (that said, the Stay Cats live were awesome). There were many bands who were rockin' until they sold out and created their version of pop-rockabilly. Ken is right, rockabilly will always be underground and obscure; as soon as you try to popularise it then it just loses its edge and becomes pop - just like it did in the 50s and in the same way that punk became new wave.
Actually Ken does mention how big rockabilly was in Europe in the 70's in his interview. However, I had to cut what was an hour and fifteen minute interview down to about four minutes and a lot of great stuff is not shown.
Thanks for the kind words. Wish I'd noticed your comment earlier. If you're ever in Chicago, give me a holler. We have a monthly get-together called the Big C Jamboree at Martyr's Nightclub, first thursday of every month. Ken Mottet

Yeah totally true, but the scene is going to shit. With all the violence going on. The old violence that existed at that time mostly the old gang culture, are slowly coming back. But everything you said is true it's kinda like an addiction, not as bad as the hot rod hobby (i know more than a couple of folks that went bankrupt cuz of that).
