@Hilty888 One thing that separates stuttering from other disabilities is its variability. One day I'm having a relatively easy time, the next I can barely speak. It can be pretty maddening.

first off, your video was very good, and your message as well :) honestly, i didn't mind the stutter, and you're right, it just makes people want to stop and listen to what you're saying (in this case, not in a bad way). but i have a question about the stutter.. it seems that the "h" sound is the hardest for you to pronounce. is this just a thing about stuttering in general, or is it specific to the person? and do you know why?
Learn that the world does not revolve around you, your wishes or your desires. Learn when to ask questions when appropriate and keep your hand down. You are a rude and attention seeking twitt who needs to go back to grade school. Don't blame it on your stuttering, blame it on your stupidity!

Wow you sandbag your teacher after being an annoying gunner in class who wastes everybody's time with your inane comments and questions. There are thousands of people like you with or without stutters in classrooms throughout the country and your are all annoying. You might be the worst because your victim identity is so ingrained in your mind that you are willing to destroy an adjunct teacher in the New York Times just to get your point across. It's unfortunate that a selfish, attention-seeking little punk like you can so easily ruin a teacher's life because you feel like everyone should bow down when you struggle to speak. It's a shame that you stutter but guess what, we all have to deal with challenges in life and that happens to be yours. Stop being a whiny, feel-sorry-for-yourself crybaby, and buck up and learn to behave like an adult. If want to get on with your life and go to college it's time to grow up!
There's always one person like you in my classes, a nerd who talks to much and asks too many questions. When you waste the class' time with too many questions you're wasting their money and interfering with their ability to learn. Don't crucify a teacher for trying to be reasonable.
You are an incredible kid. I've watched your video and I think you are an engaging speaker. I once had a grief counselor who had a profound stutter. She helped me tremendously after the sudden loss of my father. Keep spreading the word, kid.I'm listening and I think you have a lot to say.
Hey Philip! Just dropping by after I read the NY Times article. I can't believe the instructor would do such a thing and it's really unprofessional on her part. I think it's really cool of you to make these videos because it's inspiring to a lot of us and I think everyone can gain something from your messages.
Keep on talking!! Many of us are rooting for ya! :)
You said it clearly, when you talk the people will listen. All the comments are evidence of that. For 16 years old, you are very wise. Never let a person deter you from achieving your goals. You are such a great young man.
I also read the article about you in the NYT. I was shocked at the instructor's behavior and I sympathize with you. I stutter, too, but unlike you, there have been many times I've let it stop me from doing what I wanted. I wish I was as strong as you. Thank you for the inspiring words and for educating people with your videos. We will keep persevering!
Phillip, I read the article about what happened to you in your college class and came here to read/hear more about you from the source. This video brought me to tears. Your courage is evident in every word you say. Your words are such an inspiration and are full of truth! Do not stop spreading this message!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hey Phillip! I read about the situation regarding your tutor Elizabeth Snyder! That bitch had no right emailing students out of class hours, it's very unprofessional and not to mention discriminating. I'll tell you what you should do, buy a gun, hunt down the bieacth and kill the cunt! It isn't your fault you've got a 'lil stutter going on there. Like your teacher is perfect? I hate her already!
You are a VERY wonderful and a VERY inspiring young man! I'm all for fighting this discrimination as I have two members of my family that stutter as well and were bullied their whole lives. You keep on being strong, awesome, and reach for your dreams no matter what! C:
Came here via the news article as well-- and am doubly appalled that a ::history:: teacher should fail to recognize your brilliance. I doubt she'd have told Becket, Jefferson, Darwin, or Clara Barton to be silent for their stutters, and you are no different. She should know better. I hope you have continued in a place where you are more appreciated, and if history is what you choose I look forward to reading-- and hearing-- your work. Also, love that hat.
Being a student athlete at Texas A&M College Station I am constantly surrounded by people who take their lives for granted. This gives me goosebumps just watching your videos. You handle your life in an amazing way and I hope more people follow your example. This is the first time I have ever commented on a YouTube video. In just five minutes you have turned into one of the most inspirational people I have ever known about. Keep up the good fight. The world needs more people as brave as you.
Though there are many, many amazing YouTube videos out there, this is the *first* time I have been moved to comment. Thank you for sharing your voice and your spirit and your perspective. Hug!
Ms Snyder has a preconceived idea of how the world should be, and those not conforming to it are then subject to her judgements and forced to comply. She has a sever teaching disability for which I hope she gets immediate help!!! Mr Garber you are dead on and courageous in everything you are doing. Do not let the Snyders you encounter hinder you or your endeavors.
I have to say that you are an inspiration. You have an amazing perspective on the hand that life has dealt you. Your ability to transform what could potentially be a life restricting affliction into something that has strength and power should not be understated.
Your speaking style and enunciation of your words is compelling and reminded me of John Lithgow and how he enunciates his words when he talks with purpose. Not only do you have a powerful message but you have a powerful voice as well.
I'm 18, I have a stutter and I struggle with getting myself to talk in public all the time. You inspire me so much!! Please keep it up. You made my day today.
Philip, you are such a talented and cute kid! sorry to hear about your history teacher , but don't get upset or disappointed. keep your head up as u always do!
As a lifelong stutterer, I know exactly what you go/have gone through. I heard the snickers throughout secondary school, and still notice them in my third year of college. Just like the NYTimes article says, many people don't recognize stuttering for the disability that it is. Thank you for making a stand and getting our story to one of the biggest media outlets in the world.
I have to say, you are an amazing person. I saw your article on gawker.com and I was really impressed. A lot of the comments on the article were pretty judgmental (some were also supportive) but regardless of what you have to say or what you want to say, you still have a voice and you deserve to be heard. And to tell someone that nobody cares what they have to SAY, is absolutely terrible. I hope your teacher and class mates watch this video because you are a fantastic and brave person.
my first week of college, one of my classmates turned to me after class and he told me, "o wow, u stutter?!? that is so cool! its very nice. i like it. its unique like a work of art or poetry." i just took out my SpeechEasy and we ended up talking for about an hour. he made me really happy bout my stuttering. and now u just made me happy about it too. :)
Ya know- I stutter sometimes and I deffinately stop and pause mid-stream in my sentences, as I am thinking of the best way to say what I want to say. I think you are a very interesting person and I would feel honored to talk to you. as anyone should.
Found your "Sword not Jail Cell" video via NY Times article. I am a stutterer in my sixties who has "worked through" most of my stuttering problem (therapy 30+ years ago), but still avoid public speaking. Your attitude is terrific, I'm sure you will find joy and success. Have you tried any therapy?
every single one of us is slow at something basic like thinking, solving problems, walking, talking, eating, peeing, reading, understanding, feeling, expressing, reacting, deciding ... and we all should accommodate each other in goodwill, knowing others accommodate us.
I also was linked here from the NYTimes story. I loved hearing your story in this video. I would feel honored to sit and listen to you talk all day long whether you stuttered or not. I like your message and your insight. You have a great speaking voice for someone your age.
If I quoted your words exactly to make a video about 'stuttering' I could not keep the interest or touch people's hearts (and brains) as you do. BTW I'm a public speaker who has never been a stutterer.
yea i just read the article too and your stutter is not even bad at all.. i could listen to you talk for hours. u are cute charming and charismatic. that teacher is a @%#&* but props to you for turning her hating on you into a positive thing that will help bring awareness to people everywhere. KUDOS
I also just read the article on the New York Times online and just wanted to express my support for you. I was incredibly disappointed to read how the professor treated you and how passively the school responded. Keep up your advanced studies and don't let that professor hold you back. You're not alone and you've clearly got a great mind, so embrace your stutter and show Ms. Snyder who the unworthy person really is.
You are not a victim nor disabled. You choose to force society to endure your self-indulgent monologues that are slowed down to one-tenth the speed of all the other "smarter-than-the-teacher" students in most college classrooms by choosing to forgo therapy. I feel bad that the teacher was forced to point out to you that your need to verbally be heard in the classroom was selfish and disruptive to the other students learning. Your poor sense of social cues? Blame homeschooling or Aspergers.
This is one of the best posts that I've seen on here. Philip was on the news tonight claiming that he doesn't want the teacher fired. He claimed to be one of her biggest supporters. If that is the case, they why take his problems to the New York Times? He is looking for attention, nothing more.
Hey StutteringMan. Your video is totally terrific. I'm a guy who recovered from stuttering about 45 years ago and who has also played an active role in the stuttering self-help movement for over 35 years. I have a 649-page book that is a FREE download on the net. The title is REDEFINING STUTTERING: what the struggle to speak is really all about. Look for it on Google. You rock, man. -- John

Hi Phillip, my name is Jon, I'm a young aspiring musician, and I believe that your story inspired me to write a song, So, with your permission, and a little time, I'd like to write a song about the challenges you've overcome, I believe your going to be a great role model for many people.
This is an extraordinary video...and you are an extraordinary young man. I'm grateful to the New York Times for bringing you to my attention, and I will look forward to watching more of your videos. What an inspiration!!!
I'm not having trouble understanding you because of your stuttering, but because of the volume. In other words, you speak beautifully, seem very smart and funny and I'm sorry you're not just a few years older so I could date you! ;)
You are absolutely right about how the discomfort of the listener actually means they have to listen more closely, and may actually give more thought to what you are saying. That is a brilliant insight.
My heart is with you brother. I began stuttering very young. I'm now 29. I don't stutter nearly as much as I used to, but my heart still pounds when I'm asked to read out loud. Thanks for the encouraging words.
I saw the article about you in the NYTimes. You've made a social good of a private misfortune. Good for you. I am a teacher with a stutterer in my class. I would never ask him not to contribute.
You inspire me. Stay strong- you have some amazing, encouraging things to say, and there are many people who are willing to listen. And for those who do not- make them! I wish you luck in everything that you do.
I read the NYT article. I honestly don't think that you have a serious stuttering problem, you are able to talk and convey your ideas with no problem. I saw you as someone who takes their time to think and then speak. Keep up the attitude, and you will be an idol for all people that have any type of stuttering problems.
Why insist on inconveniencing 20+ people instead of just writing your question down on paper and walking it up to the teacher or asking another classmate to read it for you? It is easier for everyone including yourself and doesn't waste people's time.
@xdeathlessxonex: As a college professor, I understand to a degree the teacher's situation. I've had students with very think accents, and I didn't always understand them. I took the extra time to have them repeat themselves, sometimes more than once. I felt rather than detracting from the discussion, these students enhanced it--it gave their classmates more time to think and formulate their own questions. A teacher is there first for the students, not for themselves, or their schedule.
@xdeathlessxonex It's not clear that anyone was inconvenienced except the teacher; in fact, the two classmates interviewed indicated that his questions did not take up an inordinate amount of time. These videos demonstrate that he's a complex and deep thinker. Just a guess, but maybe the adjunct instructor (many of whom notoriously just stay one chapter ahead in the textbook) was really intimidated by the depth and complexity of his questions. Better slow and thoughtful than quick and glib.
@xdeathlessxonex That's your opinion. But I think it's a shame that we don't have time for one another in this life. What's the point of rushing if we don't have time to include the people who are right before our noses?
I read your story in the Times today. The professor was totally wrong in how she dealt with you -and your classmates, whom she deprived of your observations and insights. Her attitude is what kept people with disabilities marginalized for much of our history. Would she have told a student with a disfigured face to wear a mask? Sounds like you have a very healthy attitude and will succeed in spite of this ugliness. I hope the professor gets help -she's the one who needs it.
@TheStutteringMan I just read the Times as well! Dude!! I can't believe she said that! It was totally insensitive! Your sixteen, and in college, you are a brilliant man. I'm 22, and I have a bad time with it! haha. Keep being a badass dude! StutteringMan FTW!
you should be ashamed and maybe you are. Because that woman in no way deserved the treatment she is currently receiving because of that horribly biased incomplete article.
Talk about a spectacular person with a beautiful gift! Lucky guy. You get to see one every morning when you look in the mirror.
I stumbled on this video after reading the NYTimes story about your experience in history class. I guess your sword was a bit too much for her -- or maybe she's just caught in a jail cell of her own making. While I think what happened to you sucks, she's the one I feel sorry for. You'll do great.
Thanks for a wonderful and wise video - and for teaching me. Peace
Even at this point I couldn't muster the courage to speak openly to a video camera like you. You are doing a great thing with these videos, and re-evaluating your stutter at a younger age. I was unfortunate to come a long way by myself, but recently I have found much support and solidarity by attending a NSA NY chapter group. Thanks for the video, and keep on keeping on.
Thank you for the kind words, brother. The NSA has been a HUGE part of my life since 2004. If you've been too a conference we've probably met :-). Be well.
Great stuff ! I'm a stutterer and i recently got my first real job in the field that i studied ( computer science ) i work in a company with about 10 000 employees. In my team there are 7 people and in the big office that we work there are several teams about 150 people .My point is that i'm very anxious this days ... because of work .I only stutter when i'm asked questions or have to give someone specific advice but in small talk or on breaks i have no problems. Can you guys give me some advice?
You had my undivided attention for all the 15 minutes and 20 seconds, and that is more than I can say for any talking head. Excellent Phil! Keep it up. How about a conversation with another stutterer your age? It might give us a different point of view. "The sword in your jail cell."
@TheStutteringMan - A group or just one-on-one chat. I'm sure you know others your age who might have something to say. Stutterers have many stories to share. For example, I spent my teen years drinking "Coke" only because I couldn't get "Seven Up" out of my mouth without stuttering. I hated Coke but I got to like it. :-)
Dude I noticed that your studdering in my opinion has gotten 10X better than it was. Phill you clearly have ALOT of confidence in your self and have many friends, thats good man, keep it up dude!
First comment! I love your videos, you make me not fear my stutter and make me feel proud of it! You sound alot better man, youre deff. stuttering less

Peace!
MrCreation2011 4 months ago

I read the NYT article. I honestly don't think that you have a serious stuttering problem, you are able to talk and convey your ideas with no problem. Why insist on inconveniencing 20+ people instead of just writing your question down on paper and walking it up to the teacher or asking another classmate to read it for you? It is easier for everyone including yourself and doesn't waste people's time.
xdeathlessxonex 4 months ago
@xdeathlessxonex: As a college professor, I understand to a degree the teacher's situation. I've had students with very think accents, and I didn't always understand them. I took the extra time to have them repeat themselves, sometimes more than once. I felt rather than detracting from the discussion, these students enhanced it--it gave their classmates more time to think and formulate their own questions. A teacher is there first for the students, not for themselves, or their schedule.
andrewsalomon 4 months ago
@xdeathlessxonex It's not clear that anyone was inconvenienced except the teacher; in fact, the two classmates interviewed indicated that his questions did not take up an inordinate amount of time. These videos demonstrate that he's a complex and deep thinker. Just a guess, but maybe the adjunct instructor (many of whom notoriously just stay one chapter ahead in the textbook) was really intimidated by the depth and complexity of his questions. Better slow and thoughtful than quick and glib.
mattboy1981 4 months ago
@xdeathlessxonex That's your opinion. But I think it's a shame that we don't have time for one another in this life. What's the point of rushing if we don't have time to include the people who are right before our noses?
melissa13699 4 months ago
I read your story in the Times today. The professor was totally wrong in how she dealt with you -and your classmates, whom she deprived of your observations and insights. Her attitude is what kept people with disabilities marginalized for much of our history. Would she have told a student with a disfigured face to wear a mask? Sounds like you have a very healthy attitude and will succeed in spite of this ugliness. I hope the professor gets help -she's the one who needs it.

@TheStutteringMan - A group or just one-on-one chat. I'm sure you know others your age who might have something to say. Stutterers have many stories to share.
