I wish to hear the drum track(if it was ever a distinct recording or has any seperation at all)I love the rolls Mister Moon makes.Especially just before the the first verse and after the key channge where he simply cannot contain himself any longer. What a beautiful thing this is-one of my top 5 'The Who' ditties!Mister Townshend was listening to some Purcell and some Motown and perchance a little Byrds.Mister Lambert might have laid a few17th century platters on him in his avuncular capacity.
the best who album of the 60s i think its better than tommy!! a quick one is one of the landmarks in rock history and so sad should have given the who they're first no1.I also like the cover by the jam and weller and townsend doing it live
In my opinion, the true test of a rock band lay in whether it can make NOISE and make MUSIC at the same time. Here is The Who, passing the test WITH FLYING COLORS!
@brentenireland Oh yeah, The Breeders did an awesome cover. Check out their Letterman show appearance doing this song. Kim just cannot stop smiling, it is absolutely adorable.
The Bass sound they got on this track is amazing ...it growls......don't know what bass J.E. used, but sound like a Rickenbacker.....He made Rotosound roundwound strings famous for that sound...love that growling bottom-end sound with a clancky top...Magic!!!!!!!!!!
@satorres82 The Jam covered "So Sad About Us" in 1978 and The Merseys version was released in 1966 pre-dating the release of The Who's (they had the same management and Townshend gave them the demo). Find it here on YT.....
i remember how i was indoctrinated into Who music. bought a batch of original Who albums at a garage sale down the street from our house. 25 cents each :)). got this album, Who Sell Out, Magic Bus, Tommy, My Generation - the whole early Who enchilada you might say. my favorite has always been Who Sell Out although each of the other albums has tones of my favorite tunes as well. still have the albums, now worth $30 to $40? a piece...
i keep looking for them at garage sales but no dice :))
Great song from one of the best albums of all time. i Bought it on May 3rd, 1967 at Mays in Jamaica NY (the day after my high school prom) and been enjoying it ever since.
To me, in their early days, the who sounds like the beatles but with a kickass drummer.

This song should have been released as a single.

such a good song. I can see why The Breeders (or any band, for that matter) would want to cover it.

I think John had a better bass sound on the earlier records than he did the later ones.
Bluesub6 2 years ago 2
I would disagree his bass playing in the later records was more melodic and interesting

The Breeders covered this song on their first single that contained the minor hit "Safari". I think this is the only time this song has been covered.
satorres82 2 years ago 2
The Jam covered this song as well

That doesn't surprise me. They strike me as one of the few bands that could pull off a Who cover.
