Will new heads make a big difference on my tama swingstar? It rings so much and I don't like the sound of dampening rings or anything like that. The heads are really old though. Thanks!
@MrCalebcolkmire lol! i've done that already. i'll be more specific about my problem, you hit it dead center and it sounds great, a nice pop and no extra ring. but hit it just a little off center and it buzzes in a way it... well shouldn't. it's hard to describe
i want to know the correct procedure in putting the snare wire.. i think i have no problem in the heads but i think my wire is my problem.. please help me.. :(
are all snare drums supposed to sound like this when tuned correctly?
I mean, OK, it's in the quality of the drum, it's in the heads, it's in the snares, and in the end it's in the microphone here... but some snares have that hardly bearable ringing which you can only get rid of by dampening the head with tapes and whatnot
Thank you so much Jared, this video and your tom video helped me a lot. I use a drumdial, but I really wanted to learn how to tune my drums by ear so I can have experience and I looked at your tuning videos and it helped a lot. Thank you!
can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE convince Cobus to do a video on how he tunes his snare drum? Including EVERYTHING (snare wire, reso head, batter head....EVERYTHING) I love the sound of his snare drum and ive done everything i can to replicate it but i cant get it the way he does so beautifully...
@dude028p if individual wires are sticking out or are bent then you need to replace the snare wires. but if the whoe strand is just loose and you want to make it sharper or take away a "rattle" as rite2mukund said then just tighten the snares. my drum has a little turny knob where the switch for turning the snares on and off is. Righty tighty lefty loosey haha so just tighten it if yours is like that.
I one time was polishing my snare and changing the heads and when I went to assemble it, my snare wasn't getting to the sound I wanted. The snare itself was actually slipping through the bar that it is attached to whenever I would turn the snare key on the side of the drum. Now, my snare buzzes a whole lot more than I'd like to even at max tension on the snare key. What should I do to fix it?
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! I play concert percussion as well as drumset, so I'm ridiculously picky about my snare. It just so happens I'm also terrible at tuning drums.
Hey Jared I wanted to tell you another idea. If you buy a TPMS torque wrench for Tire pressure monitors and get a allen tool head you can always match your torque. I work with a lot of wheels where torque matters so I just wanted to throw that your way. You are a great drummer I try to watch these videos often keep up the great work!
jared i was playing my drums like always and i put a huge slit in my drum but it just is not getting the same sound is there a way to get it re skined or would i have to get a whole new drum pls reply
Their could be several reasons. You won't get rid off all yor snare buzz but hopefully I can help. Not to offend you but YouTube has a ton of tuning vids. I watched alot an took pointers that best suited me. John Good, Gavin Harrison, Thomas Lang, Freedrumlessoms.. Etc etc just type in drum tuning an whamoo!!
Anyone knows how I should tune my snare to get to the sound I really want ? Here it is : I've got a Joey Jordison Signature Snare wich sounds absolutely great when it's well tuned. Though, my problem is that I want to have some "tight over tone" if you know what I mean. I don't want to hear the chain too much. I want a tick sound and a good vibration. Do I need to tight a lot my top head and loose the other or tight my top head and tight the other too ?
My question might be a little dumb but I need help with it. I just bought a DW 3000 series double bass pedal and I wanted to know if you can maybe direct me to a video or site on how to get the right tightness on the springs? basically how to get the most out out the pedal?/ maybe this would be a topic you can make a video about thanks in advance.
Hey Jared, I notice you like Evans drum head! Have you ever used an Evans HD dry on your snare? If not, I think you should try it! The head is very crisp sounding and it sounds like a studio snare without even being miced
okay, but what about the other 5 drums on your kit? how do you feel about muffling? what do you use in your kick? kick pad or no kick pad? ported or not ported front head? hmmmmm?
@miniwargamereric Sounds like your snare is leaning on the edge of your bass drum. Just make sure that they're not touching each other, and the buzz *should* disappear...
@scottmarshall456 only thing my snare stand is touching is my high hat stand, its the vibration that my 10 and 12" toms make so close to it that are attached to my bass that make the snare wires vibrate, ive tried really tightening the snare wires it helps a bit but not totally
Me personally I like my snare to pop more then have the tension wire sound if that makes any sense. I have the Joey Jordison signature snare and to me it just sounds better to pop more. Jared you should do a video on cymbals like how tight you prefer them cuz I know some people like them tighter like me and some like them really loose.
@MrPiazza82 tune it lower and itll be fine. if you tune higher the sound will go from low to high. if you tune even it will sound flat IMO. but yea that it.
a snare is a piece of art that has its own beauty, with a snare drum every shell, head, snares, muffling, hoops and even the hardware matter as far as sonic character is defined. even if two snare drums of the same age and everything else same can be different due to playing styles. at the end my friend the conclusion is that you need to have a good ear for tuning. or you can cheat and always use a monochromatic tunner
@rite2mukund tighten ur snares, change the pitch of the bottem heads, theres really nothing to help a whole lot cause its physics and ur cant get past that
@rite2mukund just tighten the snares. i wouldnt mess with the bottom head unless you have too. but dont over tighten them because then you could get a nasty after ring.
@rite2mukund English is not my native language, then I dont know the name of the thing that makes this noise, but I know what you're talking about. I think the only way of minimizing is to increase its tension a lot. But I don't like the snare sound when I do that. Maybe there already is an acessory to minimize that, but I don't know any one. :/ I also wish this problem soluved.
@rite2mukund As I understand it, that's because of the frequencies of your toms and bass drum in relation to your snare drum. Tightening your snare wires can help a bit, but what some drummers do is they re-tune their toms and bass drum to a different pitch that doesn't set off the snares. It'll take a while to figure out, and you may lose that great sound you've already found for your toms, but if the buzz is really bothering you it may be worth doing.
@rite2mukund the snare will rattle whenever it moves. This could be without anything actually touching it, as vibrations in the air from playing loud can cause it to rattle. For example, when I jam, mine rattles if our bassist is playing, no matter what. However, the snare rattling is so quiet its barely noticable.
@rite2mukund They will rattle, nomatter what. You can't remove it entirely, and it won't be noticeable in a gig, or in plays, so just don't bother with it.
@fishballrox it could be that the snares are just a bit too loose. same thing happens to meevery now and then. i just tighten them untill it stops. just slowly turn it while hitting the kick and floor tom until its balanced (and im one that hates having my snare super tight as well as my snare being tuned high lol)
hi! very good video thanks! only one question , what can i put in my snare to drawn the eco, because i had put tape but it lefts marks and i don´t like them, i have heard about humm.. like a type of gum ... what can you recommend me? thanks :D
I always thought that this kind of vids are missing something, by that I mean the tension of the snare wires and what kind of snare wires you need to use to get the sound you like. I've tryed a lot of tunnings, and I've noticed that the snare wire is the thing what really gives the snare the sound you're looking for.
My opinion is that setting the head is over rated. I prefer to tension the head, play it. Retune as necessary. I don't like that pushing down on it, I let it break in naturally. Different strokes...see what I did there?
@JJMR322 (in my oppinion at least) its all person preference with that. some like them really tight and choke the drum and some like it really loose almost to the point that they arent even on the drum itself. (again in my oppinion) some of the best sounds ive heard for how tight the wires (snares) are is just tight enough to where if you just tap the drum with the stick lightly, you still get a nice smooth sound. in other words you dont hear a "tom" sound i guess. its hard to explain XD i tried
Could you show us how to get more of a "Black Album" snare sound? I have no idea how Lars tuned his snare and I've been trying for ages to mimic it but it's almost impossible! Major props if you can do it
@Dialga205 Start with an 8 inch deep snare, add deep-seated pent-up sexual frustration with James Hetfield and one Bob Rock to destroy everything that was great about the band. Viola, you now have Lars' snare sound.
This honestly helped me so much. I've always had a problem with tuning my snare. One question tho. Whenever i hit my high tom my snare starts to buzz. And no matter how many times i re-tuned both snare and toms it still buzz's. Do you know how to fix it?
@GabeRiseAndFall Your snare buzzes.. because of the vibrations caused by your tom, vibrating your resonant head, it can be minimized, but not always completely removed. Try loostening your snare wires ever so slightly, see if that helps. It can also be related to the position of your tom, is it really close to the snare, to what angle is it turned? (pointing 45 degrees towards you, or pointing more towards the roof)
Is that batter side head Evans G2? One thing I've found really useful when tuning drums is to use TWO drum keys at the same time (one on each side!) and turn them the same amount! By doing this it'll be sooo much easier and faster to tune your drum! At least for me! What do you think Jared? :)
thats a brilliant snare sound i am defenitely going to try that

sullydude24 3 months ago
you didnt set your head???
mrjoshfryer 3 months ago
@mrjoshfryer yes he did. lol
DjIsotope 3 months ago
@mrjoshfryer It's not mandatory to "set" or "seat" a drum head, but yes he did.

I have a question about the tension on the wires. Is there a proper way of putting them or does it depend on the sound im looking for?
JJMR322 3 months ago
@JJMR322 (in my oppinion at least) its all person preference with that. some like them really tight and choke the drum and some like it really loose almost to the point that they arent even on the drum itself. (again in my oppinion) some of the best sounds ive heard for how tight the wires (snares) are is just tight enough to where if you just tap the drum with the stick lightly, you still get a nice smooth sound. in other words you dont hear a "tom" sound i guess. its hard to explain XD i tried

@masterzero0000 you always wanna go a bit lower than your brain tells you i guess hahah. thats always worked for me =D
masterzero0000 3 months ago
Hey Jared... if I send you my snare will you tune it like that? lol
JJMR322 3 months ago
Could you show us how to get more of a "Black Album" snare sound? I have no idea how Lars tuned his snare and I've been trying for ages to mimic it but it's almost impossible! Major props if you can do it
Dialga205 3 months ago
@Dialga205 room mics, room mics, room mics.
thats all it is.
slapfish 3 months ago
@Dialga205 Start with an 8 inch deep snare, add deep-seated pent-up sexual frustration with James Hetfield and one Bob Rock to destroy everything that was great about the band. Viola, you now have Lars' snare sound.

@Logiser it actually sounds like he did! hahaha! Damn mics can pick up everything! XD
Guerrillablackdog 3 months ago
@Logiser lol,i thought so too,but no,is just that the rim touches the microphone and make that sound :S
MrMilkyMonster 3 months ago
@Logiser haha, good spot - but it looks like it's the hoop scraping along the grill on the mic. The timing of it seems to match up anyway :)
jamestownsend100 3 months ago
@Logiser nah.. if you look closely, his hand hit the mic
youngdrummer3 3 months ago
@Logiser no man, he just played a couple of notes on the snare w/ his mind

Nice video; this will help a lot! just a comment on the sound mixing, I'd turn the base drum down a tiny bit as it's very overpowering...

This honestly helped me so much. I've always had a problem with tuning my snare. One question tho. Whenever i hit my high tom my snare starts to buzz. And no matter how many times i re-tuned both snare and toms it still buzz's. Do you know how to fix it?
GabeRiseAndFall 3 months ago
@GabeRiseAndFall Your snare buzzes.. because of the vibrations caused by your tom, vibrating your resonant head, it can be minimized, but not always completely removed. Try loostening your snare wires ever so slightly, see if that helps. It can also be related to the position of your tom, is it really close to the snare, to what angle is it turned? (pointing 45 degrees towards you, or pointing more towards the roof)

Could you please consider making a video on changing the snare wires? It's always been a frustrating experience for me. Thanks!
Paranundrum 3 months ago
Hey, could you do a video on tuning the toms? I am just awful haha.

question: how does the lower side influence the sound?
krcn00b 3 months ago
Is that batter side head Evans G2? One thing I've found really useful when tuning drums is to use TWO drum keys at the same time (one on each side!) and turn them the same amount! By doing this it'll be sooo much easier and faster to tune your drum! At least for me! What do you think Jared? :)
