Thanks for pointing that out. This is my favorite film score and I honestly hadn't made the connection, since I assumed that Goldsmith had scored the film from the storyboards and that this cue was intended for the V'Ger ship in Earth orbit shot. When the 1999 expanded score CD was released, it had the longer 'Total Logic' cue for the uncompleted 3 shot San Fransico/Star Fleet intro and I noticed some other minor changes from the 1979 film score edit.
This was put in for the scene where Vejur fully appears over Earth in the Directors Cut. Even though it wasn't meant for that scene it still worked well.
