JUST MISSED!!! "Mama Look A - Boo Boo" just missed making the Billboard's Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 20 weeks in the Top 100 in 1957!!!
I grew up singing this off an old Harry Belafonte 78rpm.... later heard the original Lord Melody... much later met some of what Harry was singing of...
This is one great song pure Calypso popular in the middle 50s. Harry was the leader, no doubt about that. What a great time that was. Thanks for a great post. Super song.
My aunt told me that this refers to when black men started =having children with white women in the UK. Some kids found it hard to accept that these strange looking people were their fathers
I remember my friend down the street putting this record on their record player and we thought it was hilarious. To this day, when I hear this song, I think of their living room with the sculptured carpet...
@MsTommyknocker yes it is it was first started in Trinidad and othe caribbean countries followed with thier own styles but it is mostly sung on things that are happening in society and people it started in slavery days when slaves use to sing about their slave masters and people that they don't like

Many thanks to Belafonte for re-popularizing calypso. The man is a giant and has a place in the calypso heavens.
However, one must also recognize that Belafonte's initial career was built primarily on covers of other calypsonians' songs. This one, for example, was done by Lord Melody of Trinidad.
Belafonte did a marvelous interview in a documentary called Calypso Dreams. It's here on youtube somewhere. If you like his music, you may well like said documentary.
Have a look-see at 'Ivospee1969' version of this. It has Harry and Nat King Cole singing together it is pure gold, they both look like they are having a ball... Brilliant and very easy listening, just listen and enjoy :0)x
Jeeeeeeeeeeeeez, lighten up, ppl!!! Just listen to the music without whining and complaining about EVERYTHING!! Music is all about joy and happiness. If you feel something else while listening to this song, something is seriously wrong with you. I pity, the fools!!!
Ok, cool....Mr. Belafonte is an amazing musician, but you don't agree with his political views so he shouldn't be heard. I will put aside the fact that he did many wonderful thing for the world and just say that it shouldn't matter what one's political believes are.....American's have right of free speech. Its ridiculous for you to say something like that. You may disagree with some of his views, but I urge you to look at the whole picture, he is a true humanitarian and a smart man.

Sorry for your liberal brainwashing and inability to see the truth. Mr. Belafonte, like virtually all blacks, hates white people and Americans in particular. While we're on the subject, how's that hope and change thing working out for ya? I'll bet you think Obama means this country no harm. Open your eyes and your mind.

Spare me the sob story on all counts. Where do I begin? I come from poor beginnings and grew up around and with many blacks. I know whereof I speak. Let's say ALL blacks aren't criminals and scam artists. What comes with the minority of them just isn't worth it. Spare me the crap about less education, ask yourself why that is. Lower paying jobs? With AA in place that's a joke. Good jobs go to unqualified blacks as a matter of course.

hab auch im Internet nachgeschaut. Du hast recht, heißt auch Fehler. Boo Boo hat anscheinend mehrere Bedeutungen. Danke für die Hilfe, hät ja auch drauf kommen können im Internet zu suchen.
i've been singing this song since i was a kid (ma granma taught me) i love this song sooooo much-it reminds me of when you want the kid(s) to shut up, cos they don't know when to zip it!
My aunt had this on a 78 record and I was probably 7 when I first heard it. The women in the family would only play it when the men weren't around and we kids would laugh our heads off.
When I was little my mother banned this record once she heard me singing along along with the disrespectful chorus. Now is the first time I heard this song again since the early 60's. Thanks for uploading this one.

Obama was elected legally by most of the nation and even if u dont like him u should respect the results of elections. It s the point of democracy.
About racism. Black ppl r also, in general, poorer then white ppl and have worse paid jobs and less education.
Even if not, this doesnt show that they hate all white ppl or that they r all criminals. Ur point makes no sense

In the case of a child, it means a little cut or a bruise. It's also a silly way of referring to a mistake.

I used to exercise with my mom in our living room to this song and the other songs on that album. Harry was a cool cat way before his time.
