Christine doesn't really kill Arnie in the book. Actually, Arnie is driving with his mother to see about a college that Leigh is attending, and LeBay's spirit tries to overtake him. He tries to fight it off, as he finally has started to realize it's destroying him, and a car accident occurs killing him and his mother.

It's hard to understand if you've only seen the movie as LeBay's ghost and Arnie's relationship with Leigh do not factor in as much.
