@elegantlyamused do you think they have this book in the Barnes & Noble website? Usually they have out-of-print books. Hopefully I can find that book, it seems something that I would love to find.
yes I googled it thank you, I did find a few images. I can't find a copy of that book in any library. I don't suppose there is a chance you might photograph the pages and private message them to me?
Did you go to a special stylist, or do you think you'd be able to get this style from any salon, even a great clips or something? I'd love to know what to ask for. :)
@Euterpe27 I go to a stylist who is a friend and she does my hair; I've never tried one of the chain stores, as I've had bad experiences in the past! You might want to check out this diagram to take to show whoever cuts your hair: lisafremontpages.blogspot.com/2009/07/middy-haircut.html
@elegantlyamused Looks great! I'd love to see the diagram, a client has asked me to cut her hair in this style. Unfortunately the link no longer works... I looked around Lisa freemont's blog but couldn't find it there. any ideas? Thank you.
Did you have the hair stylist cut your hair exactly as in those diagrams, or did you modify the cut? How did you explain it to your stylist? Did you have your hair cut to 6 inches all around? I like that your hair looks "normal" even without it styled (from what I can tell on the video). The only think I worry about is getting it cut like that and then having to style it every single day. That is too much maintenance for me.
@dmll1024 I take both the Middy diagram and some pictures of classic films stars (Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall) and Dita von Teese (when she has longer hair) in with me to show my stylist. The gal who cuts my hair right now doesn't really pay attention to the diagrams in the book--she just goes by what I want to be able to do with my hair afterward! It's basically just a modification of the modern layered cut. So when I don't style it (which honestly, isn't every day!), it doesn't look too odd!
what are some of the longer styles in the book called? cause i want my hair to stay somewhat long, and i don't have enough time to get the book before my hair appointment. i want to see if i can find some of the diagrams on google. or maybe i could just tell them to do the middy plus but a bit longer? idk
@xmissmandymousex I don' have the book with me at the moment, but you could certainly just ask for a middy cut longer--I typically do get mine a tiny bit longer. I've been growing it out and plan on getting it trimmed like the middy, only more along the lines of the cut that gals like Veronica Lake sported. ;)
@ScarlettOhara2007 I have some pictures on my Flickr account of my hair not in curls (just click through to my blog link and go to my Flickr from there... YT won't let me post a link here!) in the "outfits" set. It's basically just a layered cut--nothing too odd looking! ;)
Hi! I'm getting a hair cut in about 2 weeks. I have reaaaaally curly, thick hair and I want a 30s/40s haircut, but I have NO clue what to ask my stylist for... What do I ask??
Between 0:34 and 0:36, when Casey holds up the book with Gene Tierney on the cover, I realized how much Casey looks like Gene. Casey, if you're reading this, I want you to know you're one lucky, lucky girl- not many women nowadays have that classic, "vintage" beauty.
I loooove it. And I wish my curls would look like this. They usually look rather like Bette Davis as Baby Jane :P lol. I guess it's because of the haircut, maybe I should try cutting it like this!
If it makes sense, you've definitely got a face for this. I mean, I see people with faces that work for older looks, such as an actress wanting to play in a 1950s piece may have a look that says 1950s. Dunno, but you look great!!!
i'm a guy but i like watching vids like this cuz i find them interesting and relaxing..weird as that may sound but this girls pretty cool...and gorgous! :P
my hair is about your length before you cut it. im planning on adding lower layers to achieve a veronica lake style of hair. would those diagrams still be good for my stylist?
ur soooo pretty!=-) rita hayworth has some gorgous hair! i admire her hair alot i think she has the best hair! when i think of a 1940s hairstyle i think of rita!=-)
You look gorgeous! I love it. I have naturally curly hair and have been trying to use a couple of rollers in the front to get that "peek-a-boo" look, but it never comes out right. Yours looks PERFECT. How did you do that part?
first just wanted to say that i Love your vids! so cute. and second, i Really want to cut my hair a "vintage" 40's style, but i have NO idea where to start.... if you could help me, that would be Great! Thank you, Lots of Love <3
I *love* that book, the middy plus is the one I got too. I've really been thinking of going with the middy, though, but not the baby because it gives me too much of what I call an Autry 30s look (the girls in the Gene Autry films are gorgeous, but it's a bit before US Wartime and that's what I'm going for lol). I *love* your hair, it looks amazing! I'm more of a pincurls darling, I can't really use hotrollers to save my life lol.
I also love how the 1940's era had such beautiful hairstyles, this being one of them. I loved how the style looked incredably classy and sifisticated yet wrapped up with a bit of sexy, nothing like the teezing and bleach blond styles today:( I really do wish this style would come back in, it would be fairly entertainging to be walking down the hall of my high school and all the girls look as if they've just returned from a 1940's movie.
Can you tell me if there is any way that I could do this without having layers past mid neck? (Besides sideswept bangs, of course.) Is there a long style in the book?
i love your videos they help a little but my hair is extremely long and i would like to keep it that way, my hair holds the curls very well so its not a problem. anyway what do you recommend for me for the cutting i can't find anything online- please help
Love it!! I love these hairstyles and I can't ever do anything with my hair. It's thin, straight and my forehead is pretty big. Wish I could achieve this look - I hate modern hairstyles.
OMG, love this look, you are gorgeous, I love the 40's hair styles, I wear my hair like this all the time, this type of hair style works the best if you hair is naturally wavy,( mine is too) if it is straight you will have a little harder time doing it, the layers are the key my hair is golden red and I have pale skin, I LOVE THIS Look, I get compliments a lot, more girls should go back to this style, a lot of girls now adays dont know what it is like to be femminine.
so you know how you do your hairstyle like the 40 and 50's...i was wondering how do you dress??..you should make one of how you dress!!...along with your hairstyle,,,if u do do it can you like message me or tel me,.... cus i wanna noe ,,,
My mother had hair like yours in the fifties and she always just pin curled her hair with bobby pins. It's a lot more complicated than hot rollers and more time consuming. I used to pin curl my hair in the 60's using Dippidy Do hair gel to get the curls not to frizz which was a major problem especially if you pin curled your hair right after washing it. We didn't have mousses or styling prod. like we do now. I love your hair! I'm growing mine again so I can wear it layered long.
As a hairstylist I feel compelled to say that your haircut isn't 1940s specific, I'm sorry. I do that same haircut daily on modern women who have no interest in the 1940s. From the front it appears to be a square one length, round layers with a bit of the stylists personal touch. Not that your hair doesn't look lovely cut, you had too much before... but haircuts are the same yesterday and tomorrow, only how you style it and length changes.
I think she meant she wanted it cut so that she could work it into those 40s styles more easily... I think that's what the diagrams in the book are about.
Wow! I never knew anyone would have an interest in 1940's styles in these days. I listen to songs by Bobby Darin, Pied Pipers, Ink Spots. My teachers were even surprised that I know about them.
although the turdich book is out of print, Bramcost Publications has published 4 or 5 1940s hairstyle books, from the original books actually printed in the 1940s. these were the same books it appears turdich used when writing her book -- so find these books and you can get them affordably -- turdich's book is expensive! their books have cutting instructions and hairstyle curling info!
You can catch your teeth and chip them! NEVER use your mouth to open bobby pins! Its also very unsanitary! PLUS the moisture and heat of your spit can make your hair BURN and split when heated! USE A FLAT SURFACE OF A TABLE AND A CLEAN FINGER TO OPEN! SAVE HUNDREDS ON REPAIRING YOUR TEETH!
the book is out of print, i think, and the copies available online sell for upwards of $200. BUT, if you google "1940s hairstyles by daniela turudich" you can find some scanned pages from the book, including the diagram for this style!
one question for all of you guys i've always loved this era the music, the style, the dances am in high skool goin to 10 ive always loved it but i wont dress like that cause i was shy but now i want to start dressing and style my hair like that since its my fav era will that consider me a poser? please not bad comments just ti and great style you know how to explain it really good thnks foo the video
i was lke that too. but torwards the end of my freshman year i started doing my hair like this. but i wud wear modern clothes. i think its really pretty you just have to incorporate it into your outfit the right way.
I just found your page and am so excited!!!! I've been contemplating cutting my hair for the same reasons, lost curl and it's just too long and this is just what i needed to get it done! YOu are gorgeous doll!
I love this video (and the pincurl & roller ones too) and I have a question for you,
For my birthday party coming up (40's themed) I want to do a hairstyle just like the one you have done, the only thing is my hair is about 5-8cm shorter than this and I was wondering if it would still work well? :)
would there be any way you could like take a picture of that diagram you used for your hair and send it to me lol cause ive looked for that book and its way out of my budget lol totally expensive. if you cant its ok just wondering cuz i want mine cut like yours but i dont want it to be done wrong since my hair is down to my waist almost my butt. dont want to sacrife it lol.
Thx much!! I was too excited and got it done with an inexperience stylist, unfortunately mine was out. So - I'll have to try again when my hair grows 7 inches! Thanks for the reply and advise though!
How did it go at the salon? My stylist was baffled at the same Middy Plus diagram, and I ended up with a salvage 1920s bob (which I can marcel wave) but...did you have to explain? Or did you do a modern vintage twist hairdo? Layers with 4 1/2 lenght, with U shape? Any help would be SO appreciated!
I brought in some supporting photos of Rita Hayworth, Dita von Teese (with longer locks), and Veronica Lake to show how the style would look finished as well. Basically, my stylist looked at the diagram once, said it was more confusing than the way she had learned how to cut layers, and went from the photos I brought instead! :) I would say, that for most people, that would probably be the way to go: just bring both to explain best the cut you want. :)
Hello, first off, I have to tell you how absolutely gorgeous you look! You have really inspired me to work harder on getting that true '40s look. I plan to cut my hair similarly as well and was hoping you could share with us which photos you brought with you to the stylist. I am a bit nervous getting mine cut short (I have long hair as well) and would feel more confident knowing which references got you such a beautiful cut. Thank you SO much!
Wow! That's gorgeous! There's always been something about the style of the 40s that I've loved. I'd love to try that one of these days. Maybe get an outfit to go with it. =)
That looks fantasic :D It beats all today's boring ponytails and extensions and bobs by miles! Why don't more girls wear their hair like this? *sighs*
Thank you! :) I think a lot of people don't bother with these styles simply because they take a lot longer to prep and set, but they certainly are fun to do and wear! :)
Hello! For this set, which was with hot rollers, I just used a bit of hairspray as I was rolling the hair, and then after I styled it. For pin curls, I use a dab of a styling putty or mousse to help hold things. :)
That book is so freaking expensive now, due to it being out of print. You're lucky to have it; take care of it! haha. I have a similar one but that one is supposed to be the best. Your cut turned out great...your stylist did a good job!
Your so pretty! this inspired me to go and cut mine! :)

I love this video (and the pincurl & roller ones too) and I have a question for you,
For my birthday party coming up (40's themed) I want to do a hairstyle just like the one you have done, the only thing is my hair is about 5-8cm shorter than this and I was wondering if it would still work well? :)
happilymissing 2 years ago
I think it would still work well with shorter hair (just a shorter version); although I'd do a test run first to check! :)
Good luck!

Can you do a tutorial on how to use rollers?
Because I usually end up with an afro, and curls with no consistancy.
Thankyou!

I've had a couple requests for roller tutorials, so I'll see if I can get to it in the next month or so! :)

Thank you! :) I think a lot of people don't bother with these styles simply because they take a lot longer to prep and set, but they certainly are fun to do and wear! :)

What products do you use to keep your curls lasting all day? Your hair looks fab!
NaiveMelodiess 2 years ago
