Actually, I think the Final Fantasy character designer said that Squall was based on River Pheonix, but he said Genesis was based on Gackt.

@PurpnSlurp yes he does play genesis, the characters Cloud Strife and Tidus were also based off of Gackt and so was Squall Leonheart, and his name is mentioned in "Metal Gear Solid 2" on one of the dog tags you can snag.
