  • He hasn't let her speak yet!

  • hear hear Kabogga!

  • When Ricky said'Who is your favourite painter of all time?' ,You can see Mr Hart's eyes. And he's probably thinking, 'Has it come to this? Being interviewed by this fat, talentless cunt?'

Makes you sad to think about it... :-(

  • The horrible drivel that you typed here would make anyone sad.

  • tranquility321: Likewise, I'm sure.

Now go back and get that sodding broom.

    Floors don't sweep themselves.

  • Comedy gold, no wonder you call Gervaise a fat talentless cunt. You have just cornered the market on making retarded comments, carry on regardless.

  • quite painfull to watch

  • He's just using material on him - shame really ... rather embarassing ...

  • Tony and Ricky, both geniuses, but from completely different backgrounds.I didn't know what to expect before viewing, but it actually works quite well.

  • millman

  • very sexy

  • RIP Tony Hart-a true legend. He was like the English version of Bob Ross; both were artists, and both of them came across as the happiest men in the world heh. I loved watching Tony's show as a kid, and I'm sure it would be just as popular now as it was then if the BBC decided to re-run it

  • _continentalcritics {.} blogspot {.} com_

  • Thanks for the insightful write-up on the right. TH was a gentleman and took all this well. I had no idea he was an officer in the Ghurka reg. wow.

  • I'm amazed at Tony's reactions to Gervais's humour!!!

  • so you wear one then

  • I was only joking, i respect Tony Hart a lot, i grew up watching his show.

  • They don't, however, get married and have kids with a woman they were with for 50 years

  • i remember this show and the guests really didnt know what was going on. the interview with jimmy saville was particularly awkward.

  • Hmm...Ricky's coarse humour doesn't quite mesh with Tony's gentle wit, does it?

  • Tonys composure is superb. Great man!

  • RIP tony heart

  • Perhaps this "program" was a paid for video portfolio to debut the new Mr Gervais? did this run for many episodes? seems to me he was trying to open up a new RJ shaped hole in TV, creating his own opportunities (as he mentions this in 'extras')

  • Who cares? This is not a chat show. It's a chance for Gervais to show how funny he can be. He doesn't care about his guests. He uses them to contrive jokes he's had for years. Most of the jokes from Animals are used in this TV series.

  • I love Tony Hart, what a fucking sweet old man. What a beautiful guy. I know gervais is playing a character but I find this a little hard to stomach... no offence to him though, love him...

  • yeah i agree, Tony was a real gentleman and gervias's humour is a little sharp sometimes.

  • Thats not the real ricky. If you dont like his humour, dont watch it. Simple as that. He now makes hollywood movies, so he's the one laughing now. Nice one Gervais!

  • This was made in 2000, before Rick was well known. Like or dislike his humour, this type of Anti-pc comedy was ahead of its time, now we wouldnt bat an eyelid at it. I remember seeing ricky on the 11 o'clock show and finding his comedy a little offensive, but now I think he is one of the cleverest comedians in britain. He was playing a character in these clips and also in the 11 oclock sketches.

  • you are so clever. oh irony . never had guessed that. still cheap shot humour. bit like sarcasm but branded as comedy.

  • It's amazing how few people understand irony. He's playing a character you morons, that's the point. Go and watch Last of the Summer Wine, you like that, dont you, yeah?

  • Don't let it get to you Splintersteve. It can be depressing to read the utter dribble that is posted on here. "Youtuberons" do not in any way reflect the best that society has to say.

  • Just because T Hart is dead doesn't now deem this clip sick and vile. It's comedy and it was funny and thats no disrespect to tony hart. RIP

  • nah this wan't funny when he was alive either

  • dont u morons get it? hes supposed 2 be an obnoxious idiot in this, some idiot from a reading council estate who thinks he knows everything.

  • SHUT UP RICKY! LET TONY TALK!

  • Very rude, gervais is not even funny to begin with, i find his humor lacking substance, and he does not shut up and let tony talk, what a wanker

  • Tony Hart - Old school gentleman, professional broadcaster, combat veteran in an elite unit of the British army. Pure class.

Ricky Gervais - Gob on a stick, professional smartarse, never did a real days work in his life. Fat greasy toad.

I think that sums it up ?

  • sidw I really like Gervais but I must be honest and say your comment is good , pithy and to the point and has mad me think again

  • Gervais makes himself look a proper cunt here. I'm aware the clip has been heavily edited but Gervais just won't shut the fuck up and his comments are offensive given who Tony Hart is and the way he's responding to Ricky's questions.

  • i thought that Tony Hart looked pretty uncomfortable here & for such a gracious man was probably not used to this foul mouthed language from someone that was trying to upstage this lovely man.I was never great as an artist(cant even draw a dog properly)but this guy was a true true gent & genius rolled into one.Shame he couldn't have had a few more years on this earth & the world is a sadder place without you Tony RIP

  • Did you know that Tony Hart was in an episode of BANZAI, faking it as a youth club DJ..He had a great sense of humour. I dont think Ricky Gervais is all that cruel in this, he's playing a 'Billy Bigot'..(Though I still think that PEN-15 club joke was crass, and Jonathan Ross-esque).

  • As an irreverent comedy chat show it's got a Frank Skinner tongue-in-cheek feel (not ABUSE like the Andrew Sachs calls..), and Tony Hart would have been going along with it I'm sure..The guy has been cluey enough to succeed in television for many decades so he knew it would be a bit rude.

  • Obviously embarrassing for Gervais now, but this was filmed years ago.

Tony Hart was the embodiment of what a gentleman should be.

I'm glad that this clip is here to show my nieces and nephews that manners really do count but also so they may be inspired by other Tony Hart clips on youtube.

I had the privelage of watching the series 'Hartbeat' as a kid and even now I am influenced by his personality and talent.

Thank you Mr. Hart and God bless your family.

  • When people complain about recent gratuitous bad language on TV, let's not forget this 'gem' was back in 2000.

The smut & swearing jarred so horribly with the presence of a truly eloquent & classy broadcaster.

When Tony - being a good sport - agreed to take part in this pointless show, in which Gervais clearly considered himself much more interesting than his esteemed guest, it just highlighted how Tony's legacy goes beyond his huge contribution to educational TV.

    He was also a gentleman!

  • I like Gervais but I was surprised with the low quality smut on show here. Probably why this show didnt last too long

  • would you prefer some higher quality smut? :D

  • well Id rather my smut contained less penis ;p and some humour to warrant it would be nice. tut tut ricky!

  • mr little77 get off the moral high ground gervais is still a tosser. are you his mother?

  • Ahhah, The PEN15 club, heeheeee-heh-hah-ho, hilarious. I don't think I've heard that since I was 5. This was awful.

    RIP, Tony Hart.

  • What all you retards are missing is that Tony Hart was probably made aware this was going to be a tongue in cheek interview and there is no way Ricky would be nasty or rude to the legend that is Mr Hart if youve seen any of his interviews, hes not like that. Imbeciles. Ricky is a legend!!!!!

  • i agree with everything i like ricky gervais but he looks a cunt tony hart genius ricky should say he,s sorry

  • Through mournful eyes this appears to be disrespectful and inappropriate conduct by Gervais, however Tony was a very intelligent man and knew what he was participating in. Ricky Gervais is in his evasive persona here, don't judge this out of context. I believe Gervais will be remembered in years to come as he revolutionised the sitcom. Two very different worlds collide, not the most successful meeting I grant you.

  • This is awful. Cringeworthy.

Tony Hart was a legend and Ricky was an idiot in this interview.

    RIP Tony Hart.

  • ricky what a tosser you are, tony was and always be a legend, pity ricky isnt where tony is now, Tony Hart irreplaceable

  • what a complete wanker! that's embarrassing to watch...

  • what a tosser

  • Ricky Gervais is a bloody idiot who will soon be a has-been, but my great great great great great great grandchildren will tell their own children about the genius that was Tony Hart. Asking him to do rude art with cucumbers and walnuts. Bless him, Tony was simply being polite, but the stupid audience laughed. And to think he never had an OBE, yet there a huge chance that w***** will get one in 10 years time. RIP Tony - we your children-in-art are now 'Morphans', but your legacy lives on.

  • Who was that DJ on BBC6 who got pilloried by the hoi polloi for his awful interview with Ray Davies of The Kinks?

The words "pales" and "in significance" spring to mind.

  • Actually, its embarrasing as well as sad to watch this. And the annoying thing is, I contribute to that tosser Gervais's wages.

  • I can only imagine what Tony's family must think when they watch this clip. He was such a talented and wise man, far too much so to be featured on a shite programme like this. It made me sad to watch this! He didn't give Tony more than 30 seconds to talk during the whole thing. Lets put Gervais on the front line instead shall we? Lets see him take the piss then.

  • rip

  • This really shows how much of an idiot Gervais really is and how little he knows about both his guest and how little he understands art in general. Also this interview is about the guest, not him.

Tony Hart is legend of a man may he rest in peace and always be remembered for inspiring so many young artists and designers.

  • Gervais really really looks ridiculous. Here was a terrific opportunity to meet with and chat to a lovely chap who has contributed more than he ever will, and he wastes it by talking incessantly at him. Rude and arrogant man.

  • Yes, agreed. It's a real shame and I hope Tony wasn't too offended by all this. I think Ricky has grown up a lot since then (thankfully)

  • Gervais IS A WANKER

  • gervais is clearly trying to take the piss out of this dear man. gervais is a tosser

  • This clip shows Gervais for what he really is a complete Wanker.

Please BBC ITV etc etc Give Ross, Gervais and the rest of the chat show hosts who use respected guest apperances to showcase there unfunny scripted drivel the boot!!! It's just not funny........

  • For such a gentle and quiet man, Tony in his younger years enrolled in the Indian Army with the 1st Gurkha Rifles. That alone commands a fair bit of respect. But I suppose Gervais, the talentless prick, would not know what a Ghurka was anyway. He probably thinks its a pickled vegetable at the centre of his Quarter Pounder with cheese.. Poor Tony.

  • yeah you're right.. I'm not that convinced that Gervais was really being 'himself' though. He's not quite as crass as the other two buffoons.. As for Hart, he wasn't some flash-in-the-pan TV star from those days. Desperate onflicts like 1939 were everyday life and being in the Gurkas was a topic of modesty for him (in REAL wars against invaders) ..then began in TV after periods of setbacks in his career in art.

  • he was david brent in this, david brent in the office, david brent in extras, david brent in the couple of films he's been in???? god when will people see he's the most talentless cunt that has the honour of being on our tv and movie screens!!! all he does now is arse lick all of hollywood and david bowie along with jonathan "tosspot" ross, highly overpaid pricks.

  • What a complete prick Gervais is. Tony deserved so much more respect during his interview than this uneducated tosser could possibly grant him. If only he would let poor Tony get a word in edgeways.. I wonder what Tony was thinking during this farce of an interview? Cant believe we pay for tossers like this! RIP Tony..

  • What a plonker that Ricky is. Is that what are license fee pays for? A wanker of a man who won't give guests time to speak. He is the worst interviewer ever!!!!!!!!!

  • Ricky Gervais this is an interview for Tony Hart and not about you. Why is it we hear you more than Tony who we are more interested in.

  • Sorry Tony that you had to endure this Jonathon Ross style of a presenter. Makes me cringe every time Gervais makes a stupid comment to your views.

R.I.P. Tony you were far better than the trash for entertainment we get now. When are tv producers going to wake up to putting on decent telly not these ego tripping assholes we get now.

  • Wish Ricky Gervais didn't do this interview with the stupid cheap Ross style that is so unintelligent. Tony Hart was a man deserving the respect of a decent interviewer not a clown.

  • What a very sad loss for all of us. A man who inspired more creativity in 20 minutes on TV than all the polititians in the world have ever done. We'll miss you Tony "and now, the gallery....."

  • I must say, I normally like Gervais, but this 'interview' is excruciating. I wish Tone had had more opportunity to get his points out.

  • What a dude. This man was the living embodiment of my childhood. Thanks, Tone!

By rights, it really should have been an 'art attack, though, shouldn't it?

  • Someone linked to this from the Guardian site: What's the point of an interview if you only want to hear the sound of your own voice? Gervais is a tool.

  • Tony Hart is going to be missed a talented man, well spoken gentleman. Rest In Peace.

  • Old tony Is pure class I will miss him very much

my daughter bought me a diy morph for xmas

then we all got talking about tony

my bro in law said tonys dead Isn't he I said no he had 2 strokes but he Is still here but alas he has gone to a better place problably painting the uk skys a brighter shade of blue hopefully R,I,P Mr Hart.

  • Tony Hart 1925 - 2009 R.I.P.

  • Once again I see the single layer, one dimensional performance of Gervais. He really is disturbingly unfunny most of the time. Put him next to Morecombe, Barker, Cooper, or any of the pythons... Kay just leaves him looking pathetic, He should give up and just become a pub quizmaster, he might actually be funny once a week on a Wednesday night if I was a little pissed.

  • RIP Tony...You make our childhoods special and will be missed alot. One of a kind

  • RIP Tony Hart

  • agree - but look, things were happening for Ricky at this point (pre-Office) so, like all of us at some stage, got a bit over excited. Ambition i think. I forgive him anyway. RIP Tony Heart

  • Rest in peace Tony. I still have that picture of a tiger that you drew for my brothers and I in the early 90s. I will treasure it. x

  • I normally like Ricky Gervais but in this he's just disrespectful and vile. Rest in peace, Mr Hart and thank you for starting my love of art

  • R.I.P Tony Hart

  • Ricky could have done with shutting up for his "interview"

  • Sad news that we've lost one of the best personalties the BBC ever had.

  • R.I.P tony hart

  • R.I.P Tony hart :(

  • RIP Tony Hart, one of the last true gentlemen

  • rip tony, u were a legend

  • Tony passed away in the early hours of sunday 18th of January 2008. Rest well Tony, you gave us the will to draw.

  • R.I.P

  • uurrrggh Ricky Gervais is such a twat

  • rip tony

  • R.I.P TONY YOU WAS ONE OF THE BEST

  • R.I.P. tony

  • I have just heard the extremely sad news that Tony Hart has passed away. May you rest in peace with Morph!

  • R.I.P Tony

  • It's disgusting to think how losers like Jonathan Ross (a pig) have an OBE and heros like Tony Hart have not. Shame on the powers that be.

Tony Hart rest in peace. Love from your fans.

  • Yep ltalbless you're so right about Ross who was suspended for those infantile, abusive phone rants..a real disgrace to an OBE. I think Ross probably deserved this punishment, maybe more.

And true Tony Hart was one of a kind, and one of the THE best, and most positively beneficial. He's one of the most talented and genuinely likeable personalities to ever grace the BBC.

  • Tony Hart RIP

  • RIP Tony - many happy memories

  • Tony was a nice man and a good artist.

  • Just heard Tony has passed away - what a loss! Very influential to lots of kids in the 70's who are now graphic artists, animators and even film makers . . RIP

  • RIP Tony. I loved your work as a kid and even managed to forgive you for not featuring my (terrible) picture in the Gallery!

I completely agree with the comments here. I Actually wanted to hear Tony develop his opinions on art but he's just a sounding board for Gervais's ego and the dembed down audience.

  • God Bless Tony Hart RIP

you made art lessons at school so fun

  • This is one of the few times I got bloody annoyed with Gervais. I would have liked to have heard a lot more from Tony, about his background and about the creation of Morph.

  • The pity is, we couldn't hear more of Tony Hart, a true genius....but then, we all have to bow down to people Ricky Gervais. But then he knows Tony would upstage him, in his quiet modest way, so he has to keep talking loudly and pointlessly. But Ricky, it has been done before, and funnier, by Alan Partridge.

  • prontfond, unfortunately this is how people are these days.....we have the "I'm more important and wonderful than you" syndrome. Alas, the truly important and clever people never get the chance to talk, usually because they are too modest.

  • ' You must of come in the gallery sometimes and said 'I don't care if she is 7 that is rubbish -get it off my wall'

    lol

  • comedy genius

  • people need to see old gervais stuff like this (& also the utter garbage that is Flanimals) to realise that although very funny in things like "the office" he certainly isn't the comedy genius he's made out to be. Tony Hart on the other hand is a genius & tv art legend & I hope had fully agreed to the kind of "interview" ricky subjected him to.

  • gervais is being ironic

its funny as we know its tongue in cheek

    lighten up

p.s tony hart is laughing, why don't you try and get the joke?

  • yeah I think Gervais's comedy CAN be cringingly one-dimensional for some, but is quoted saying he was playing 'billy bigot'... He's doing pretty well and more people like him than his errm mate 'Wossy'.

Tony Hart shouldn't even be included in the same sentence..he's got a 'sense of humour'.

  • He's laughing to be polite... that's obvious

  • I couldn't watch much of this. On one side we have Tony Hart, what an Englishman ought to be like, and on the other side Ricky Gervais, what unfortunately a lot of Englishmen are like.

I realise that Gervais is doing his act here, but this is still embarrassing.

  • I agree, it is embarassing, but no doubt Tony Hart has heard worse during his army days. Though it's not so much the bad language as the dismissive lack of respect that's the problem. Apparently, it's seen as "old fashioned" these days to afford others kindness & respect. Sure, it's his style, but why subject a man like Hart to it? Maybe that's the point, but it's more uncomfortable than funny.

  • "I obviously havent just brought you here for a chat" says Ricky,

Indeed, he has brought them there as a way to practice his own stand up material,in a rehersed style similar to Mrs Merton. Mrs Merton, however, was funny. Ricky looks uncomfortable, his delivery wooden, zero charisma and in general looks and sounds like the typical cunt you would find at some pub who thinks they are hilarious.

  • And also Caroline Aherne, whose "The Royle Family", is a far far sharper series than "The Office", would never be labelled "genius" or "king of comedy", largely because of her gender of course. Gervais' success is largely due to his "averageness", which is what we are all told we ought to be today...average.

  • Read this today about Tony hart:

Tony Hart has been forced to give up art after two strokes left him unable to draw.

The 83-year-old TV artist told The Times that he spends most of his time confined to a chair at his home in Surrey.

He said: "It has been my lifetime passion, but I endeavour to stay cheerful as there is nothing to be done about my condition."

"Today my studio lies abandoned and I spend most of my day confined to my chair."

  • Why doesnt he let Tony talk?

  • Cos he's like the rest of these oiks,Jonathon Ross included, egotistical and love the sound of their voices. I thought that interview was disrespectful to Tony Hart

  • I have to agree, i think the interview is disrespectful to the legend and proper gent Tony Hart. I would have loved to hear about Tonys life without Gervais trying to be funny. This just ends up being cringe-worthy, which was the sort of humour the office was based on i spose. I am a Gervais fan not in this instance anyone got any vids of life and times of Tony Hart thro me a link!

  • Tony Rocks!

  • PEN15

    nice.

  • I like Ricky, but if you're going to have someone on the show and then talk over them with shit jokes it should be some twit, not a legend like Tony.

  • Oh Gervais...you absolute genius!

  • Ironic statement, right.....?

  • lol. i love ricky gervais. he is one funny guy imo.

  • Ricky was doing his Karl Pilkington impression and worldview during this whole series - see that?

  • man that sucked!! Is this show for real? Or is it a Gervais spoof like Extras style? I definitely missed something here...ie. the humour. Don't know why he invited Tony Hart on if he was just going to bombard him with such utter shite.

  • It is a spoof. This was a character Ricky used to play on the 11 o'clock show so I'm sure backstage they would have had a good relationship

  • yer as much as i like ricky he's a shit interviewer, tony is wicked

  • His Penny Hill interview was absolutely hilarious.

  • iv always been a fan of ricky, but i do admit hes not cut out for interviewing, but tonys service with the gurkas i think he wont get offended by the swearing, and he does loo as though hes enjoying himself, hes a bigger man than that to be offended by it. the guy that comes out the worst is the bloke of bullseye, hes just acting a twat, for the laughs,

  • Not only is Gervais dismissive of Tony Hart's gifts, he doesn't discuss his years of TV experience. TH was there at the beginnings of British TV. He has an artistic gift that brought pleasure to millions. He even fought in WWII. You'd be hard-pushed to know that from this sorry interview.

  • what you say seeing this is true.. but in the guy's defence, if you read Ricky Gervais' comments on this series from 2000 (or my description blurb) then you can see it's actually designed so that the interviewer is irreverent and in his own word "playing Billy Bigot".. I particularly resent the casual, disregarding and slightly self-centred brand of interviewing (Jonathan Ross does it by really lowering the tone ending up looking smarmy or sleezy rather than witty, loveable & sleek as intended).

  • ps. can't agree more about your thoughts on Tony Hart. His TV contribution since the 60s were media-transforming (along with the like of Attenborough in natural history). He's an outstanding television presenter, especially childrens TV xx

  • Thanks, wayzotoichi. I see what you mean about his "Billy Bigot" / devil's advocate pose. But surely we can see sweary bigots every day of the week, just by walking down the street or jumping on a bus!? I think that TV / showbiz should perhaps aim a wee bit higher!

Jonathon Ross you rightly name and shame as another practitioner of self-centred interviewing. No doubt he's an intelligent chap but.... what wasted conversational opportunities!

  • Ricky Gervais is yet another overhyped TV interviewer who clearly thinks he's more important than the interviewee. BTW Using the f*** word is COMPLETELY inappropriate in this context but Gervais doesn't care; he showed very little respect for his guests.

  • Tony Hart seems to be genuinely enjoying himself here.

  • I didn't know Ricky did a chatshow.

  • It was hardly a chatshow. Chat implies a two-way conversation. The guests were invited to listen to Gervais.

He asked Tony Hart a couple of questions at the beginning and showed no interest in the answers, then monologued for the rest of the "interview".

  • Erm..... Ok.
