@Big77Jim It's all very relative "hating" an album by one's favourite band. I guess if Rick Wakeman had his reasons to "hate it" ... so if fans are "hating" an album has to be put in perspective... It's all part of the Yes-soap-opera lifestyle:)
I don't know why this album gets so slated. This was the first Yes music I ever heard (in the early ninties) & Oceans was the first CD I ever bought. I'm still hearing fresh things in it after all these years. Nice playing as well by the way.
Good to see another generation that cut their teeth on Squire. Cool! And good to see you know what dead spots are. Had some joker on here claim they had to do with frets....didn't like being corrected. I need to do something on dead spots on guitars (both 6 and 4 string) as there is nothing here....it's how I found this. Loved that white Ric in the other vid. I miss my Ric even 30 years after trading it on another bass.
This 22 minutes of cathedral and canyon,of pasture with wildflower and bird chat.Of wayside and skyline,of reach and quay.Yes,This the Opus of music that seems so overlooked by students of Yes
@TheTherese3 I think it's becoming less disregarded... although it has been uses as a sort of "dinosaur-flag" to thrash prog when it started to get out of fashion... but fashions are precisely fashions and music prevails much longer then fashions.
altrough, i like the song very much, i can't approve playing bass with a pick, it's degenerative, awful control of sound. But, as i'm not a relevant person here, who gives a fuck :DD
@Budjopro No problem. People will always have preferences and some will agree with you. Still if you took the time to watch the clip, thank you very much!
This was very enjoyable to watch and listen to. Chris Squire is a magnificent musician that amongst bass players never got the full recognition he deserves because he plays with a pick. Yes plays complex, intricate music that complements the lyrics which speak to the soul, communion with the Self, inspired by those that have self realization and listened to by those that hear their soul's reminder by its' indulgence in their music to aspire to the same goal. Squire is so integral. Great job.
@TheBrilliantGeniuses He doesn't think he's Chris Squire. He's a talented fan who loves playing Chris's Basslines. What's the matter, you jealous of his ability?
@TheBrilliantGeniuses Post your own video attempting to play one single chord on any instrument, and then, MAYBE, you'll have the "authority" to say things like that other asshole Simon Cowell would say. You own MiguelBass an apology, that is if you aren't a complete dickhead.
I'm not sure why, but this has always been my favourit song from Oceans. I know Revealing Science and Ritual are better songs, but I can't help but like this song more.
@TheMothershabooboo I read somewhere that this is one of the basslines that Chris himself is prouder of making, albeit it's not one of the most "famous".
One of my all time favorites..I am who I am today...a woman of spirit because of these days of my life. This causes me to remember who I truly am..so much beauty, so intense of movement..so heartful. Simply wonderful..
The lyrics and music are quite mystical. The composition has impacted me my entire life. I suppose I am considered "old" now. I was present when YES performed this in 1973. At that time, the audience was quiet as the musicians played, unlike now. So long ago and such a splendid memory I have held over the decades. For me, Tales From Topograhic Oceans is the Great Work of YES.
@200909will As much as I remember it was an old set of roundwounds (i always use them) . The tone is somewhat less bright perhaps because of the bass' acoustics and/or pickups. I don't remember about the pickups being full open but I usually do that - thanks!
I always felt like Squire turned down his bass for the first three tracks of 'Tales' - ok Ritual has the bass solo, but even in Wakeman's keyboard solo at the end of 'Revealing Science..' there is very little grunt, where he could have really put in an equally amazing bassline. The bass on Fragile, CTTE and Relayer still seems more prominent to me. However, this is just my opinion.
Thanks :) I partly agree... It was also a matter of the mixing and production, plus the drummer change, eventually. If the bass would be produced like on Fragile, I believe Chris playing would emerge anyway... as it does, only you have to make an extra effort, coming from the earlier albums :)
Man forget Rock Band! People should do what you're doing. I do this all the time at home. If I had a better camera I would do the same thing. This is my favorite song from that album too.
That's how I see it too. Of course I like playing live, but for this sort of work, which means a lot t me, here I have more audience who knows better and can appreciate and discuss what I am doing. Hope you'll start uploading sometime! Thanks
Wow...that was probably one of the most artful things I've seen on this site. I too am doing some revisiting of my own of the old progressive rock. I can't even imagine the amount of work you put into this.
Thank you! It was really very "Tales" for me... I used a real projector and played to the film I composed for the background. I remember my old room was very colourful :))
The sound is nowhere near as bad as you think. I find that J-bass gets pretty close to the Ric sound, with enough tweaking. I've got 2 of them, a Fender '62 and a new cheap Squier Fretless, and they both sound great.
Excellent job! Truly an amazing bass part by Chris. Imagine playing that, on a fretless no less, and singing the incredible harmonies that he created! I saw them do the entire album live in the '70s just after they recorded it and was completely blown away. Yes at their absolute peak.
Indeed! They still put on a great show. I've seen them several times on recent tours. One of the more memorable shows was at Jones Beach in NY a couple of days before 9-11 in 2001. They performed "Gates of Delirium" and "In the Presence Of," among others. I had backstage passes through a friend and got to meet Chris and Alan after the show. We hung out and chatted for a while. Two extremely nice guys! Meeting Chris, in particular, was a dream come true.
Um... An Indian delicacy that involves rice, but that's not the point. There's a legend that Rick himself brags about to this day, about how for him the Tales tour was so boring and the parts to the songs were so easy, that one night he decided that he'd have a curry dinner on-stage while playing, and this supposedly upset Jon Anderson a great deal, which set in motion Rick's departure from the group. That's why I ask, because maybe, just maybe, you could've been there on that fateful night.
Buen trabajo miguel! very nice job!!! I've been a fan of Yes for over 30 years, but more a fan of Chris Squire... Tienes un gran talento. Muito obrigado

Saw YES twice in the seventies. Tickets were $8.50 and that was with 3 other groups(Bob Seger, Starz, Donovan) at Rich Stadium, where the Buffalo Bills play.
Never was my favourite but I just didn't have the patience to go through the first minutes... Now, after doing the clip and all the study that went with it, I especially like it, as much as tRSoG.
Bestial!
hey man you should look into john entwistle stuff... he does some amazing stuff, especially live... by the way i just saw yes 4 times and chris ripped my face off
I believe this was a tricky song to make a great bassline to with all the rythmic changes and it's soo atmospheric at the same time. I understand why Chris felt this was kinda special to him.
Never heard another bassplayer who playes those fast atmospheric fillings that appears in this song here at 04:40 and again at 07:38, and in Ritual etc. it sounds soo good, really like that. Miguel, as usual you handle Chris bass work really great. Looking forward to hear you play other Yes/Chris stuff.
Good playing for one of Yes' lost classics. You should try out 'Ritual' as well. That song had some impressive bass playing. Overall, you have some impressive chops. Squire can't be equalled, but you come pretty close to his original playing. I look forward to seeing Fish on the 'In The Present' tour Yes is about to perform.
Hi Alex! Thank you so much. It's really much more that meets the eye, this bassline that I didn't know so well before. It's been very rewarding to discover many aspects of this particular work. The song itself grew up on me immenselly. Just nowadays I learned that this is one of the basslines that Chris Squire actually stated he is really proud of what he's done. I understand now why! Hang on to part 2 and thanks for your words and support. Um abraço!
A complete joy to watch and listen to. This song has been a long time favourite of mine. I'm totally thrilled with your brilliant work, you really have outdone yourself with this song choice, miguel. This is not an easy one to play on bass AT ALL. Muito obrigado and waiting anxiously for part 2!

Bestial!

Estou neste momento a ler o livro do Yogananda.

Parabens, Miguel.

Gorgeous; the design of the video, as well. I feel funny, becoming a fan of a fan (of Chris Sqire :).
With all respect to your talent devoted to Yes only.
