This was on the back of one of their 45s. I think I still have it. I saw him live a couple of times, once on Feb. 8, 1969 in Athens, Ga., and once in Merrillville, Ind. on my 50th birthday. Great singer.
saw Gary at Holiday Star in Indiana; wanted his autograph but he was getting ready to sing so he told me to come to the side door after the set!!....and he was there!!...very nice!!...we had a great conversation about his music!!...HE'S THE BEST!!!
Dang! I just read in Wikipedia that Gary Puckett grew up in Yakima Washington, which is only about an hour from where I grew up! Of course I was only 11 when this song came out--as the song says "much too young, girl!" I loved it then and I love it now. This man could really sing and he was seriously CUTE!
I saw him for free, and by accident at a local outdoors (now called "strip-malls) shopping mall. I saw a small crowd gathering around a newly constructed "stage" in the parking lot. I heard the first two notes of "Young Girl," and I KNEW who was singing! Got to see the whole show, up close and personal!
What a man. Thanks for posting. Saw him live a long time ago, and we stalked his stage room...oh what fun...they were outta there long before we got in; however, we did get to touch and sniff his jacket! Young love, and days gone by.
Summer 1969.I remember myself, then a 14 y.o boy,at night(those really hot summer nights in Spain),listening to this song on Radio Luxembourg with a small transistor device stuck to my ear not to disturb my family's sleep. Those were the days!
I saw Gary Puckett in concert about 3 1/2 yrs ago in Hanover PA.....I have to admit that I was a little disappointed with his singing. He didn't, or couldn't hold the notes on particular songs the way he did when he was young, but so what. He can still sing great. I don't think there are any American Idol singers who could touch him when he was in his hey day. He had the perfect voice and one I'll never get tired of hearing. Thanks for all the memories, Gary.
Met Gary after a concert. I mentioned that we have the same birthday (10/17). His look said basically, "Hey, guy, I'm signing autographs for these cute teeny-boppers. I really don't care about your birthday." I don't blame him. They did nothing but great songs!
JG you have impeccable taste!! Gary Puckett couldn't sing a bum song if he tried.I know that some recent live shows have drawn muted criticism but what do people want after 40 years.Pityis that he didn't get the outstanding acclaim he deserved 40 years ago. Thanks for the memories.
Hey Pucket fans...if you have the opportunity, check out another one called 'Give In'. Just another great Puckett song! If I could figure out some video, I would put it up there myself, cos I have it.
I love Gary Puckett and the Union Gap and I've never heard this song before. It's great... Has anyone heard of his song Lullabye? It's really beautiful...
Yes, Lullabye is another of those songs that work very well with holding that special lady in your arms. Gary Puckett was one of the great voices of our generation, and he held many a military serviceman together during the war. Be sure to catch all of his tunes recently released on CD. Check out "Home"......"And everynight they lie awake.....and dream of Mama's chocolate cake..........Phenomenal!!!
Lullabye is a great piece of Puckett vocal. But if you want the ultimate in the Puckett experience, check out the song 'I'm Losing You'. My absolute favorite song by GP, and the BEST torch song I've ever heard. Check out 'Give In' as well. (sigh!)
This song, Could I, is so amazing.....I just can't believe it wasn't a major hit by him. I sure would've bought it. I haven't heard the other song you're speaking of..."I'm Losing You" and I can't find it on You Tube.
I'm losing you is on the "Incredible" CD, along with other songs mentioned here. Very appropriately named as the whole CD is incredible ! Tourqpool on Youtube usually can download requests for you.
I'm Losing You is a superb ballad. I'm happy to say that I have all of his music, and I know all of the melodies and lyrics by heart. I played his tunes as loud as my amplifier would allow during my military time, and his voice cascaded throughout the barracks. Not one guy complained. Gary's songs meant thinking of family back home, and of that special girl. Gary Puckett and The Union Gap deserve to be in the Rock Hall. For you drummers out there, Paul Wheatbread was incredible!
I'm so glad to hear that. His songs touched so many hearts, it's nice to know you guys had gotten some comfort from it, and I am positive that GP and the rest of the group, Paul Wheatbread especially included, would love to hear that.
Hey GaGa.......I've seen Gary twice in the past 4 years and he still has some of that magic. Can't hit all the high notes, but the notes he can hit he can hold in his own silky way. He's great with the crowd and stays afterwards for autographs until everyone is taken care of. Catch him if you can. Anyone out there dig the great sounds of Toto? Rock on citizens!
when i was about 8 or 9, i was going though someones garbage and found about 5 or 6 records. I guess it was about 1972. The records were zombies-time of the season, cream- sunsine of your love, for what its worth-, i forget who sings it, boxtops-cry like a baby and gary puckett- young girl and on the other side of young girl was could i. I remember the color red on the record, anyway its been about 35 years since i heard could i, just want to say thanks for the upload
No one even comes close to the voice of Gary Puckett. Just an amazing voice. I never get tired of his singing and listen to his music over and over again. There will never be another voice like the gift God gave to Gary.
Two CD's just released with two former albums on each. One CD has the Young Girl album, and the other is the Over You album. The Common Cold is on the Over You album. All have been remastered and they are awesome. Gary's silky voice will never be duplicated.
I have loved this song for most of my life. Gary had an amazing voice! His songs were always so sincere and emotional. Sometimes I find it hard not to get overemotional when listening to any his great songs. They were fantastic! I'm glad that others know this as well.
If you ever go see him perform, Gary is very fan friendly after his shows. In fact, I think he's one of the nicest people I've ever met. Very gracious.
Thanks StanBennet. I've wanted to see him for ages, but the few times I heard he was performing, it was always way out on the east coast. Great to hear that he is fan friendly! You're so lucky to have seen him. I guess I will always have his great recordings to satisfy me. Thanks again StanBennet.
