If any modern British songwriter deserves to be called a genius, it's Paddy. Met him in Newcastle at a book signing given by Stewart Maconie and got his autograph. Lovely bloke, and the experinece sent shivers down my spine. He is one of my all-time idols.

Paddy is a genius in the same league as people like Donald Fagen: creative, original. That said, I've just bought the album and have to say I expected a little less synth and a bit more guitars, but it's full of songs that will grow on you. Some of his best singing, though i's a real pity the rest of the band didn't get to record it and as it is a one-man effort, it´s a bit too heavy on programming and drum machines, at least for my taste.
I totally agree Paddy has some of the warmest chord progressons, & the music is so alluring in the way of it striking your emotions that is remenicint of Todd rundgren. This song reminds me of being in Germany riding around in cars

Music is a Princess off the new cd is McAloon at his melodic best, and the sentiment about the beauty of music is on the money as usual. I hope that this cruelly underrated band are accorded their rightful place in the pantheon of great artists one day, and recognised for their brilliant work. @sirarthurfiggis I can only think of one other: Green Gartside of Scritti Politti. Have a listen on YouTube to the beautiful 'Petrococadollar' from Scritti's most recent album. Green's voice, like Paddy's, is still in the same superb nick it ever was (Green's grown a big beard as well!). Great that he and Paddy are still around and making music.
It certainly is a wonderful album but not as good as Steve McQueen or From Langley Park To Memphis imo. Just as good as Jordan though which is an enormous compliment.

I'm very disappointed with this. Seems to have gone the same way of Bob Zimmerman and proclaimed god as music. It sounds like death to me - the summoning up of empty and trite biblical language. Sounds like what the historian E.P. Thompson called, 'Physcic masturbation'. An empty 1980's wine bar that just heard it's last sad, confused conversation. From Manley Park to Wastelands.
This album is a demo that Paddy put together between Jordan and Andromeda which Sony rejected for various reasons.
The reason the band does not appear is this was only a demo which never made it to the point of being recorded by the band.
Paddy has an incredible amount of unreleased material which will likely never be release so it is great that this one has finally seen the light of day.
So glad I went to see the Sprouts (minus a couple of members) on their last tour back in 2000.
Paddy has made it pretty clear he has no intention of touring again due to his health problems.
I just wish the crowd at the Shepherds Bush Empire that night had showed a little more respect instead of chattering their way through the entire gig. Middle class media cunts.

No doubt Jordan was a classic album but The Sprouts have done some great things since. Terrific banjo on Cowboy Dreams, fantastic guitar solo on The Gunman and who could forget the fiddles on Farmyard Cat. Anyone who can get away with the lyric " he's got 9 lives and he rhymes with Matt" is a genius in my book.
Put aside your medieval superstitious beliefs and sky-fairy stories and listen to the music. Listen to the voices of Darwin, Dawkins, Derren Brown etc and join the rest of us in the real world.
I agree with the complimentary reviews of this track. It's a relief - although needs the Wendy touch to make it great.
I also agree with the comments about Paddy's beard. He looks like the president of the Frosty Jack's Cider Appreciation Society. But, let's overlook that. Welcome back.

@sirarthurfiggis I can only think of one other: Green Gartside of Scritti Politti. Have a listen on YouTube to the beautiful 'Petrococadollar' from Scritti's most recent album. Green's voice, like Paddy's, is still in the same superb nick it ever was (Green's grown a big beard as well!). Great that he and Paddy are still around and making music.

It certainly is a wonderful album but not as good as Steve McQueen or From Langley Park To Memphis imo. Just as good as Jordan though which is an enormous compliment.

I'm very disappointed with this. Seems to have gone the same way of Bob Zimmerman and proclaimed god as music. It sounds like death to me - the summoning up of empty and trite biblical language. Sounds like what the historian E.P. Thompson called, 'Physcic masturbation'. An empty 1980's wine bar that just heard it's last sad, confused conversation. From Manley Park to Wastelands.

Great song, but not new.
This album is a demo that Paddy put together between Jordan and Andromeda which Sony rejected for various reasons.
The reason the band does not appear is this was only a demo which never made it to the point of being recorded by the band.
Paddy has an incredible amount of unreleased material which will likely never be release so it is great that this one has finally seen the light of day.

So glad I went to see the Sprouts (minus a couple of members) on their last tour back in 2000.
Paddy has made it pretty clear he has no intention of touring again due to his health problems.
I just wish the crowd at the Shepherds Bush Empire that night had showed a little more respect instead of chattering their way through the entire gig. Middle class media cunts.

Only got the album yesterday but I am loving it so far. Earth the story so far is a beautiful song. I know it originally belonged between Jordan and Andromeda Heights and you can really hear that.

Naff 80's production. Sounds like a cross between Prince and Dollar. Paddy reached a pinnacle with Jordon. I'm yet to be convinced he's done much since.

Mmm. Have you thrown your rattle out of the pram? ;-) We've been shortchanged by Paddy for years now. The Gunman was just re-hashed oldies and a lot of the early singles are still not available on CD. Whether it's his illness or just sheer disregard for the fans, who knows?

No doubt Jordan was a classic album but The Sprouts have done some great things since. Terrific banjo on Cowboy Dreams, fantastic guitar solo on The Gunman and who could forget the fiddles on Farmyard Cat. Anyone who can get away with the lyric " he's got 9 lives and he rhymes with Matt" is a genius in my book.

I agree with the complimentary reviews of this track. It's a relief - although needs the Wendy touch to make it great.
