So sad to hear of the recent news of Leslie West. To be honest I was thinking he was looking fairly healthy recently. To lose a leg for such an energetic guy must be absolutely terrible. Hope he is able to perform again soon and I wish him the best.
I have a Les Paul Studio '60s Tribute and I really want to get some higher gain out of it from my 2P90's. Im very interested in the DLX Plus soapbar. Is it possible to change my P90's to the DLX Plus?
dude, if it wasn't for the "nantucket sleighride" album, I would not play bass and/or guitar the way I do now. Leslie West & Felix Pappalardi forever.
Cool, I didn't know Leslie West was the inspiration behind DiMarzio pickups but it makes sense. I called DiMarzio a few years ago to order some parts and talked to this lady who was really nice and had this great New York accent (kinda like Leslie's!). Great company!
"Leslie West uses Fast Track 2 Megadrive and custom DiMarzio pickups, DiMarzio straps and cables on his signature Dean guitar, and a right hand crafted from God's elite craftsmen Saint Kick & Saint Ass, best knows as Saints Kick Ass!" :) When it comes to Tone, the West stands Alone.
Hi Larry, really nice video! I've been wondering. Back in the day, Leslie always seemed to prefer P90 pickups. He even had a Flying V with a single P90 in the bridge. I've always thought of his tone as "The P90 tone". How come that he is using full-size humbuckers nowdays?
You are right, Leslie's original sound had a lot to do with P90s and Sun PA heads. However, with the introduction of hi-gain amps and custom pickups he gets a sound he likes.
I have to say that the tone that Leslie got in those early Mountain days was really memorable. There are loads of flash guitarists around but to have a "tone" is a damned sight harder to achieve.
Check out Mountain performing under the World Trade Center in the Summer 2001, 30 days before the towers fell... Recorded two songs: Mississippi Queen and Crossroads... both stellar versions!! Enjoy! Check my profile page for links...
Ahh no problem Larry. I had it on CVHS for so long in a closet... it was just too memorable a show to never have it see light again. I just wish I had the knowledge you did to transfer it to youtube without the wigglies, the original is much clearer. Thank you for your truly unique contribution to rock and roll. Peace!
What is the name of the song at the end of the video? It is awesome!!

He's a real comedian. Mountain played a gig in Manchester a few years ago, and he had the audience crying with laughter.
