I think Chris Houlihan was just a little cheated. He won a contest that promised the winner would get a cameo. But it was relegated to a room that no one was ever supposed to see unless something went wrong with the game. I'm not sure that deserves to be called a cameo.
The Houlihan Room, is the room where you are sent when the game hasn't had the time to load the next room in memory. It's sort of an emergency 'panic' room for the game to send you so it doesn't crash. Running all the way there causes the a bug in the room transitions, requiring it to send you there. It is named after an old Nintendo Power contest winner, and not supposed to be found unless you bug the game.
I actually found the Chris Houlihan room through another entrance when I was younger. I believe it was a hole that you fall down near the Witch's hut....
There is no time limit to get to Chris Houlihan's room. You just need to use the dash for scrolling the screen at certain places which will make the game lose track of your position in the map and then when you fall down a hole you will be taken to a fail-safe room.
Sooo a bunny is in Link's heart and mind?......um ok say no more,so I guess what Link's thinking is showing Zelda "what's up doc"....oh gosh that was terrible
Alright so I ran through the first few Temples to see what happens if you don't ge the Pearl... It's just one bonus line of dialouge telling you to go get the Moon Pearl.
I happened to find out something else that's probably known though.
You can use the Bug Catching Net for the "final boss" just like you can use the bottle to defeat Ganon in OoT.
"The lahhmp" - Ahh! Real Monsters ref? If so, then you my good man continue to be the voice of my generation. I actually found the Houlihan room quite by accident when I first played this game, and remember getting spooked because I thought my cartridge was haunted.
the chris houlihan room isn't a glitch. when ALLTP was being advertised, nintendo power held a contest, chris won. this was a built in easter egg, not a glitch.
Is it just me or does the title of this remind me of Scarlet Monastery Interrogator Vishas? "I'll rip the secrets from your flesh!" Sorry... I had a nerd moment. Plz forgive. <3
Hey HCBaily, I don't know if you knew the whole story behind that Chris Houllihan room. Nintendo Power had a competition to get your name in this game. That's the just of it. figured full knowledge of it would be good to know (I only found about this myself a few years ago).
If I am not mistaken Nintendo's official guide, which i still own, tells how to access the Chris Houlihan room. It's definitely not a widely known secret, but rom hackers did not discover it that's for sure.
@HCBailly Before going to the Tower of Hera make a savestate then play through the tower and complete it WITHOUT getting the Moon Pearl. Head to Hyrule Castle and fight the Wizard Aghiman(sp) You should get glitched into the Dark World as a bunny.
@BrianD0313 It's not a glitch. The game mentions to you to go back to get it when you listen to the plot voice when you get to the Dark World as a bunny after fighting him.
Being an avid reader of Nintendo Power back in the day, I knew all about the Chris Houlihan room. I can't remember if NP actually told people how to access it, but I do remember finding it myself once.
I did not, however, know about cucco-lady. I am amazed that after nearly 20 years and more than two dozen playthroughs, I actually learned something new about this game.
I remember finding the Chris Houlihan room when I was like 7 years old, I barely understood how big a secret this was, but I knew I should call my mom at work (who was a huge SNES gamer) and tell her about it. I'll never forget it XD
I'm learning things about this game that I never knew before. I had heard about the Chris Houlihan room and I read about the woman who turns into a fairy just yesterday (I'm attempting a perfect run of this game), but I didn't know about the chicken-woman! Wow!
I never really noticed that stuff about the old man mentioning the king so much... After all, as the intro told us, Agahnim killed the king... so saying "the wizard has deceived the king", and "The king took my granddaughter to the castle" doesn't make much sense. I guess it must have been a translation error.
Also, I always got the feeling that the man DID want you to look for the Golden Power and save the world, despite his protests otherwise.
Wow! I never knew about how to get Chris Houlihan's room, or those two uses of the Magic Powder... and I've beat this game dozens upon dozens of times since it first came out in 1992! Thanks, HC! I love learning little things like that about my favorite games from your LPs :)
Actually, they knew about it. The problem with that secret room was that he won the contest but it was either Nintendo of America or Japan that later refused to put it in, so they snuck it in for the kid.
"You hit these guys, they turn to stone. There's probably a way to kill them."
Indeed, and you had the item equipped! Using the Magic Powder turns them into the sandbag enemies. Very easy to kill then. (Something I learned only recently.)
It's always a good episode when you make a secret episode. They should have made a random cameo phrase "It's a secret to everyone." from the first Zelda game. That would've been pretty cool.
@AirPirateCid They did that with the thief that gave him 300 rupies to not tell anyone about his hideout in the last episode, except they translated it properly.
Yeah, Chris Houlihan won a contest in Nintendo Power to win a cameo appearance in a Zelda game. He isn't mentioned in the gba version but the room is still there.
Hey HCBailly, call me ignorant, but concerning 8:44, wouldn't it be easier for you if you stopped the recording after doing something difficult like getting into the Chris Houlihan room and then continuing with another recording? Or do you avoid doing this because of the people who might complain otherwise?
@Cyron757 By that point, I was so far into the video, I didn't feel like editing two clips together. Also, the thrill of getting into that room got me so excited, I forgot to say Piece of POWA!
@HCBailly HCBailly I got into the chris houlihan room because i like to randomly dash around the map. Are you going to make another video with more secrets? And I also very much enjoy your walkthroughs like FF7 FF8 FF9 and FFT have you thought about crisis core and when are you thinking about starting 12?
Those stone monsters on Death Mountain can be killed with Magic Powder or a certain "shaky" attack you get later on.
If Zelda's calling Link a cocktease, that's... kind of disturbing. Though I did lol at the "Zelda said I moved too fast" bit.
I have made it to the CH room a couple times, at least once through that thief's cave under a rock near the desert entrance. But I never knew about the chicken trick, even after 20 years of playing the game.
HCBailly, have you ever tried the Golden Sun series? I don't remember if you've already said so, I'm sorry... I've played through the first game, but own all three and the first time I played it it blew my mind how such a great game could go so unnoticed... you should really give it a try and if you already have, I hope you liked it...
Wow. I didn't think he could do it, but HCBailly has actually taught me something new and interesting about this game(although I probably should have just looked up all the secrets some time ago anyway). I had no idea about the chicken-lady or the lady-fairy... huh! And I knew about the Chris room, but I didn't know you could get there without hacking...man.
My very first time going through A Link to the Past when I was a kid, I got up to the part at the end of the video here...and got stuck. I had *no* freaking clue what to do for at least a day. I remember waking up the next morning, turning the game on, wander around the mountain for an hour, and then hit the warp zone. I had tried using a few items before, but it wouldn't let me, then my eyes went to the mirror...used it...and felt like an idiot for the rest of the day.
I always knew about the secret room, but never how to get there since I didn't bother looking it up after the advent of internet.
That's Zelda logic. If you really need hearts, you're gonna get Rupees, even if you were at max. If you are full hearts but need to get more Rupees to buy something expensive, you get hearts.
I wonder, is the cave part from Chapter 1 in Mother 3 a parody of that old man escorting in this video? It feels like it, what with it being pitch black and receiving directions.
It's kind of like discovering a Civil War relic or something like that in the backyard you've had for years. The new games are in a way, like the Wild West or such. There is still much to learn and explore, so there is no rush.
My analogy is most likely wrong, but hopefully, you get what I'm trying to say.
So, to answer that question you posed in one of your Radiant Historia responses regarding why people are more interested in seeing someone play a 20 year old game (such as this) rather than the new stuff; I'd have to say it's because we like seeing stuff or people showing stuff being revealed in a game we thought we knew about.
the chris Houltain contest was in nintendo power that said if you take a picture of a boss in a certain Final Faintisy game you whould get your name hidden in a NES game but was delayed to the SNES
@HCBailly Complete confusion and suspense. At 2:17 I was like, "so, wait.. He's going to go back into the castle dungeon? What then?" You basically blew my mind when you didn't end up there.
@Duorsa It's easier and more fun for me to make 10-minute episodes. I'd prefer to do that all the time. However, I'd also rather my LPs not go over 90 episodes, 120 max. If I feel an LP would go over that amount with 10-minute episodes, then I'll increase the episode length to compensate. It also partially depends on how much progress I feel I can make in 10-15 minutes.
@Duorsa Notice how this has been uploaded consistently every day since it started, despite being a side LP (i.e. IN ADDITION to his main LP)? It's because the episodes are quick and easy to make. Increasing the length would probably decrease the likelihood of episodes being uploaded so consecutively.
If I had decided to play a drinking game where I would guzzle everytime you said "Stay away from me, man!" to an approaching enemy in this LP, I would have been hammered by the end of episode #02. Just kidding! Great job as always, Mr. Bailly!
Wow I never figured out how to get back into that room in the castles basement. It was so simple too. That's been bugging me since I first played this game all those years ago. I did know about the Chris Houlihan room though (I read an article online lol) Wow when I said a few episode ago that "i thought i knew everything in this game"... that didn't even scratch the surface. I didn't realize how much i really didn't know about this game haha
I remember missing the Moon Pearl the first time I played through this game, and when a certain thing happened later, holy crap I don't think I've ever been that terrified in a Zelda game. That music will always resonate with me 'cause of that.
@NintendoCapriSun I never liked the music that played when you were bunny link. I always felt that something was gonna come eat me. Kinda like those Silent Guardians in Skyward Sword. O_____o I swear I had night mares about those trials.
i'm so glad you're doing this game HC. i remember my brother and i saved up our allowance when we were kids to buy this game for $50, i believe it was. totally worth it!
SNO: i wish link could have a bazooka, he could light a bom inserted in one end to shoot another bomb unparreleled distances. like maybe aim it at boulders that have no ledges you can put a bomb on. the only dounside is that it would cost two bombs

...Too...much...mind blowing...secrets...
So, to answer that question you posed in one of your Radiant Historia responses regarding why people are more interested in seeing someone play a 20 year old game (such as this) rather than the new stuff; I'd have to say it's because we like seeing stuff or people showing stuff being revealed in a game we thought we knew about.
gilgamesh255 2 months ago
the chris Houltain contest was in nintendo power that said if you take a picture of a boss in a certain Final Faintisy game you whould get your name hidden in a NES game but was delayed to the SNES
emfolkerts 2 months ago
I always wanted to test that... I never did...
What the hell happens "at that point" when you keep playing without the Moon Pearl...?
RagingRabite 2 months ago
@RagingRabite You play as a defenseless bunny, fail to progress, get lost, panic, and then you choose one of the following options:
1- You realise you missed something and go search for it
2- Play the game all over again
3- Look up on the internet
4- Give up.
Eincrossfire 2 months ago
@RagingRabite Sahasrahla telepathically tells you "You done screwed up", basically. I think he tells you you have to go back and get it.

So... You say you won't be able to fit all the secrets in this LP? Do I smell bonus episodes~?

2:25 HOLY SHIT!!! (I yelled aloud, making my roomie ask, "What?")
I NEVER KNEW ABOUT THAT.
HCB, blowing my mind, even with games I thought I knew like clockwork!

@TrueSoreThumb What were you thinking @ 1:50?
HCBailly 2 months ago 2
@HCBailly Complete confusion and suspense. At 2:17 I was like, "so, wait.. He's going to go back into the castle dungeon? What then?" You basically blew my mind when you didn't end up there.

@HCBailly O.o "Wat is he trying to achieve"
LukkiiAsian 2 months ago
HCBailly, are you purposefully making all these episodes short compared to your other LP's to preserve the legnth of ths LP?
Duorsa 2 months ago
@Duorsa It's easier and more fun for me to make 10-minute episodes. I'd prefer to do that all the time. However, I'd also rather my LPs not go over 90 episodes, 120 max. If I feel an LP would go over that amount with 10-minute episodes, then I'll increase the episode length to compensate. It also partially depends on how much progress I feel I can make in 10-15 minutes.
HCBailly 2 months ago
@Duorsa Notice how this has been uploaded consistently every day since it started, despite being a side LP (i.e. IN ADDITION to his main LP)? It's because the episodes are quick and easy to make. Increasing the length would probably decrease the likelihood of episodes being uploaded so consecutively.
speyeker 2 months ago
I don't mind mind watching this rather than plot progression at all
wtfareyousmoking 2 months ago
Because, as we all know, viewers, the best time for HCBailly to talk is when he says he's going to be quiet. :)

I didn't realize how much i really didn't know about this game haha
himez123 2 months ago
In the Game Boy Advance version, touching one of those green jellies also induces a highly irritating screen-blurring effect.

Why is it that whenever I watch a new episode it's always at 301 or 302 vies?
BankaiKisuke 2 months ago
@BankaiKisuke YT freezes the viewer count at 301-304 to verify that they aren't "fake" views.

I remember missing the Moon Pearl the first time I played through this game, and when a certain thing happened later, holy crap I don't think I've ever been that terrified in a Zelda game. That music will always resonate with me 'cause of that.

@NintendoCapriSun Yeah I remember that happening to me a couple times while I first played through the game. Freaked me out.
Urzaran 2 months ago
@NintendoCapriSun I never liked the music that played when you were bunny link. I always felt that something was gonna come eat me. Kinda like those Silent Guardians in Skyward Sword. O_____o I swear I had night mares about those trials.

Fun fact, the dungeons in LttP matches up with the ones from Skyward Sword if you overlay the maps on top of each other.
