For a horrible moment I thought you'd just swaped the cosmetics round rather than changing the up-down shift pattern to match. Tthank god you did the job properly!

@crofty1984 yeah. I'm not that vain. I do the job properly. That said, I didn't really like it after I did the job. Funny thing is now they sell the bootleg plastic imitations on eBay out of Tawain. And now BMW has them on the new 2012 3 series. So I guess we can all agree where they got the idea from.

@hkdvdmovies not all cars have steptronic the same. Maybe your tranny is a DCT or SMG. Either way I can't tell you whats wrong if I can't see your car plus I don't have a z4.

@CHOOBYco put it in neutral, squeeze with both hands and pull the bastard off........ try not to knock yourself out by banging it into your face..... I know of someone who knocked himself out, his head landed onto the exposed metal rod which went straight through his eye and into his brain. BMW reply: das ist nicht sehr gut!! should take to dealer

Dude - I have been looking for this. Do you have a DIY on e46 fanatics?? If so pm me the link. You do some cool stuff. I hate shifting forward going up gear. It screws me up - I think it has to do with riding bikes for so long. It seems backwards. Thanks again.

@fbibogdan I used a can of Plasti-Dip to spray a new coat of 'rubberized' paint over the plates. I have a DIY write up on all the BMW forums.

I bought the shifter on eBay. The BMW dealership sells them from $190 and up. Or you could try the classifieds section on most of the BMW forums like bimmerwerkz bimmerfest or bimmerforums or e90post

@ryanairpilot737 They are usually lots of them on eBay from around $50 - they sell out quick but if you do a Saved Search you will eventually find one. Another option is to visit or call your local BMW Dealership and order a Brand New one for around $190. It is not that hard to find.

Nice conversion , but how can this be functional? , the P button doesnt work.

@adpmol This is mainly more cosmetic than functional. I "like" how it looks and I like the function that work which are the the led P R N D M/S on the knob. All BMWs E46 already has own shift lock with the brake pedal so you obviously can't put the car in R while driving in D.

The P button will not put the car into park since that is a electrical command function.
