I love Pavarotti and prefer his voice but Bruce Sledge has an incredible clear voice like no other opera singer without lacking emotions. In my opinion little better than Domingo, Carraras or Villazon.
I don`t know how to choose between all the excellent singers, but i prefer Sledge and Pavarotti the most.
Especially....i saw that movie again...Sum of all fears.....and it reminded me how good this singer was.
“Bruce Sledge, a bel canto tenor with a silky, almost sensual voice, won over his audience at Friday night's San Antonio Opera with his rendition, his voice cresting effortlessly, his mannerisms clean and stripped of artifice.”
Its a nice version indeed, which I first heard in the film The Sum of all Fears. Ive googled Mr. Sledge, there are 520.000 (!) pages related to his name, I have looked up some 20 of them, but Ive been unable to trace so far any biographical details. I am surprised to read he sings in many known lyric theaters including The Met and he is rather unknown.
This track is from the OST of the movie The Sum of all Fears. It appears in the end scene of the movie. It's one of the best movie ends scene I ever seen. Check it out here in YT, is sublime...
@egv19 I completely agree. What a fantastic ending to "The Sum Of All Fears." Or as I've humorously called the ending, "Cotton Weary Saves The Day." All joking aside, Bruce's version was an excellent choice. Beautiful.
Where is Mr. Sledge from..have to get some of his CD's..nice voice, different than Pavarotti's, of course.."milder"..if yo0u will..I wish I would have seen Pavarotti in person before God called him home...my lose..
I've always thought Pavoratti was the best as a performance to be seen in person. But I think Bruce Sledge really provided a calm, atmospheric version of this wonderful song. Both are absolutely outstanding.
This recording of Bruce's was featured in the closing sequence of the U.S. movie "The Sum of All Fears". his singing of this ties the entire end of that movie together... totally fantastic. When I watch that movie at home I anticipate the part of the movie when his voice comes in. Such a great moment, and wonderful voice.
great voice, but perhaps the music could be allowed to breathe more... pavarotti sounds like he has all the time in the world to get those notes fully shaped - and it's nothing to do with the tempo
This is probably the best version ever.

And I think this version is the best !!!

The Sum Of All Fears used a lot of unknown singers and artists in its soundtrack.
Nevertheless, the soundtrack turned out to be truly brilliant.

What a marvelous, nearly tender reading of this piece. Compare it to no one, the music gets heard, the great mantle of past masters is passed on.
