@rodricktucker I bet that makes life easy. When I was working I had to sort into 6 sections on the route... that process wasted a TON of time. Glad to see they don't have to sort on route up in Michigan! =)
LOL yeah you've got that right.... this is one of the last stops for this route... so he's probably got a dozen or so bins left. I bet he was worn out. You know how WM works drivers =)
Thanks! I use a tiny Canon PowerShot "SD1100 IS" its one of those point and shoot cameras that can do vids/pics. It's very easy to carry around.. so I try to keep it with me as often as possible.
There's 4 sections on this truck. I think they are from front to back: metal, glass, paper, plastic. Plastic is usually the one that fills up the fastest.. and in the vid you can see that section is almost full.
LOL, actually, when I picked up the bin, I noticed that one of the labels had separated from one of the plastic bottles, I think he was trying to shake it loose - thinking it was paper, but it was stuck to the bin.
Honestly, I have NO idea where the controls for this truck are... usually they are in the middle of the cab. This guy has been on this route for a while, so it wouldn't shock me.
(4 months after the original comment/response) Yes he did cycle it with his foot. When I was at that dealer the other day, I definitely saw controls in that area. There's a pic somewhere buried on Flickr.
This truck has 4 sections - I think they are front to back: metal, glass, paper, plastic. We are way behind the times here... when it comes to collection... but that's how the residents want it.
When I did recycle with a 6 section truck: IF the material was presorted, I would take it. IF the material was mixed I would take it ONLY if they had a bin that I could sort the material in, if not, it got tagged and I drove on. I left a large contractor bag of mixed recycle cuz I couldn't sort it.
One time I had a large wire basket that was about the size of a 95 gallon cart that was full of cans, I took that a little at a time, I had to raise my hopper 4 or 5 times to get it all in the truck.
On my old truck from front to back... the sections were: plastic, newspaper, misc color glass, brown glass, clear glass, and metal.
As for needing a garbage can for recycling, I've never generated enough waste over the course of the week to require and entire garbage can for recycling (and most places I've lived have strict recycling rules with limited collection). Usually I crush all my recyclables, and I have more than enough space in the several bins that I do have.
It stayed in the bin. WM didn't except office paper either - we bailed and sold all our own recyclables at the transfer station. Only took newspaper - nothing more for paper products on residential routes.
Interesting side note: IF the divider locks on the truck failed during dumping while at the transfer and the load mixed, then the entire load became garbage. It was more cost effective to trash it all rather than re-sort everything. This is why I REALLY LIKE single stream.
I use to drive a 6 section recycling truck similar to this one. There's dividers inside the body that keep everything separate. Now... if one of the divider locks fail (I've had that happen), when you go to dump (its a tip to dump body) the load will mix. But when everything works right, you can dump each section individually starting with the rear-most section. The dividers will swing like a dog-door when they are unlocked. I hope that makes sense... sometimes I'm bad at explaining things.
Cool we used to have this in Winnipeg about 7 years ago!

Think that's the first time I've seen the bucket operated from inside the cab... cool! :) Nice vid, this guy was cruising along nicely haha

LOL yeah. Not many of the trucks appear to have in cab controls for the hopper. I know my old truck didn't. I bet it's a nice feature.

Like the beeper on that truck.
Nice catch indeed. My question is: What happens if residents use normal trash cans for their recyclables because of the size of their families?
Wow.

What were the 6 sections? Would you use a normal garbage can for your recyclables like straight plastic or straight metal or paper?

Where did white and coloured paper and cardboard go? In the newsprint section?
