@ibaneziceman2007 Roads are built for cars and paid for by car owners? Oh dear, perhaps it’s because people like you hold such ill informed and selfish attitudes that Critical Mass exists in the first place. The road system is for everyone and paid for out of general taxation.. get over it and learn to share.
@TCTC68 I'm not sure what website you skimmed over to get your information but roads are paid for by vehicle owners. This is why it is required to get a license plate and renew it once a year.
Even if the tax from vehicles didn't go towards roads, the roads were put there for cars and should therefore be used by cars.
@ibaneziceman2007 I’m afraid you’re simply wrong, both morally and legally. Apart from the TV licence there are no hypothecated taxes in the UK. Public roads are legal rights of way for all pedestrians, cyclists and horseriders etc EXCEPT for motorists who may, subject to certain conditions, drive a motor vehicle on a public road under licence.. get your facts right before making ignorant posts…
@ibaneziceman2007 Roads were built for horse drawn carriages son, unless there were cars at the time the road system was originally being built (Roman times onwards to the Georgian era) - which there weren't. If they were cycling on a motorway, then you'd have a point - motorways are the one road system built specifically for cars, and that's why cyclists aren't allowed on it. You really are poorly informed. General taxation pays for the road.
@thewizardofrhythm If general taxation pays for the roads, please tell why we pay a fee once a year for license plates. In the era of horse drawn carriages, I would probably consider them to be paths and trails rather than roads. Once the automobile was invented, these paths and trails were eventually updated for AUTOMOBILES, NOT bicycles. Therefore, roads are meant for cars.
@ibaneziceman2007 The roads were not updated for automobiles alone I'm afraid, all road systems aside from motorways are provisioned and designed for all road users from HGVs to cyclists. Even in the US, where I'm assuming you live, the money you put forward for your license plate is more likely to be spent on defence than road building - this is why it is called GENERAL taxation i.e. it is added into the public accounts and spent on anything. Please, before you repost, try to educate yourself.
@thewizardofrhythm That doesn't make any sense. I believe the general taxation goes towards defense and license plates towards roads because it is paid by vehicle owners. What's not to understand? If you use it, you pay for it. All I am arguing is that it is simply not safe for bikes and cars to travel on the same roads because cars obviously go much faster. Of course our society is bettering itself by adding bike lanes to streets and some roads, but this is not the case in many areas.
@ibaneziceman2007 With regards to your idea about roads being paths in the time of horse-drawn carriages, this may be partly true - the surface isn't how we know it - i.e. always unpaved. The important thing for you to consider is that the road layout was designed for horse drawn carriages; dangerous roads that see numerous, often lethal, accidents were never considered a problem because they were designed for horse drawn carriages. The "roads belong to cars" argument, it doesn't hold water.
@ibaneziceman2007 Finally, here are a few examples for you to ponder. First, the Fosse Way, Avon, UK built in Roman times and retains it's road layout to this very day - like the vast majority of roads over here - and this work for the US too, albeit the roads were designed later (for horse drawn carriages). Second, the Cycle Superhighway System, London - a series of large cycle lanes, an example of roads being designed with more than cars in mind. You don't know how bigoted you sound. Goodbye.
@thewizardofrhythm Of course, the American government is pretty crooked and loves to spread tax dollars around like prostitutes but that is the only point that would suggest that I am wrong about taxes for vehicles going towards roads.
@ibaneziceman2007 As for my original comment to this video... I simply think it is stupid that bicyclists want to "share the road" yet here they are hogging up half of the street. I'm not against bicyclists. I actually ride a bike pretty often myself, but when a vehicle is coming, I yield to them as though I were a pedestrian. I understand that someone in a vehicle is trying to get somewhere faster than me and therefore, I don't hold them up like some asshole.
Been such a long time since I lived in the UK and forgot about the driving on the left side. Never seen zig zag lines on a street B4. It's illegal to ride a bike in Vancouver without a helmet so that looks odd too. Critical Mass still happens here but the bike wars have been mostly won with new bike lanes being put in everywhere downtown and across major bridges except the Lion's Gate which has sidewalks (it's a large suspension bridge).
I love how bicyclists want drivers to "share the road" and then they go on mass bike rides and hog an entire lane.
