He said that Cromwell may have been a manic-depressive. I think most dictators, if not all, are. They are that, or suffer from Borderline P.D.-mood swings . And if they weren't before assuming power, they sure will be by the time they are powerless. And we wonder why history is full of wars&genocide. Its the leaders personalities. How they react. And their need to impose their will. What good is it to have power¬ use it. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. :D
Oliver was a wolf in sheeps clothing, presumably pius and humble but a filthy asshole Jew in disguise. Goodbye England Charles the I was your last king.
@Talbot6832 Just what is wrong with simon schama? He is one of the most highly respected historians on British, European and American history today. I have read some of his books and the reviews by fellow historians are glowing. This man really knows his subjects.
oh Im so pleased the bbc is putting full docs on youtube now instead of using it as a advert for its shows. so now instead of getting one or two mins clips we can watch the great history docs the bbc produce.
Cromwell was a brilliant military man, but also a religious fanatic and a traitor. The regime he built couldn't outlive him. Charles II was a man of the world, but that's what England needed.
Oh yes, and Robespierre and the Jacobins were real guardians of liberty. Cromwell and his puritanical major generals were very similar to the perpetrators of the great terror which brutaly punished any dissent in France, big or small, real or imagined.
bloody or not the french revoltuion changed the world
i will give you this
as bad as cromwell was he was a step towards parlaimentary demopcracy
but he was a proetestant and i never liked
that religion my grandfather was a clavinist and as much as i loved and respected him his beliefs were bigoted and disgusting i hate cromwell for what he did to ireland, at least the catholic side of my family knew how to have a good time, i dont like any religon that doesnt drink, dont trust it
Well you're right, it did change the world, but so did Stalin's Great Terror, and the holocaust etc...
I also agree that Calvinism is a dreary and bigoted tradition, but I have Ulster protestant family and believe me, they know how to have a good time, and they definitely drink!
I see what you're getting at but its a bit of a caricature to say prods are dreary and catholics are fun-loving.

This documentary has a little problem, it doesn't have letterings. It's important to understand better.

Great series! This episode should have been called "King Oliver" or something. The title "Revolutions" didn't quite seem to fit in my opinion.

cromwell was more like osama bin laden
the first REAL revolution was the french revolution, madame revolution's children all spoke french

there still a very puritan streak in protestants i never liked it
its horrid lawys snuck off with the cahtlic side when i wanted to have some fun
the fench revolution for all its excess
gave us secualr liberal democratic world we live in
and that change is a far cry from soviet communism
