@MiLLwallpaul231258 This is a drawback of re-recording narration from a US-originated programme for a UK audience - they have to stick verbatim to the original script, otherwise copyright issues arise. So even though the narration has been re-recorded for UK broadcast, the words stay the same. On all these air accident documentaries on National Geographic etc, you'll invariably hear "airplane" not "aeroplane".
lots of homophobic reactions here about Ruth etc...you should all be so couragious ..apart from that it has been my experience that homophobes are for the most part closeted and/or frustrated men strugggling with homosexual feeling but affraid to act on them and jealous(if their ignorance allows it) of the freedom and creativity of gays, compared to their own drab and grey straight lives..
Railways weren't ALLOWED to expand further into London??
They REALLY need to check their facts, a central station for all the companies to use was the overall goal but the land prices in the centre of London was too expensive. So they built the Met instead.
thats a big problem with the tube it was built by seperate companies at different times sometimes competing..and not as one whole system by government as is the case elsewhere..so to bring it together is still an issue its complex with differing signalling etc. its unique in this regard
I firmly believe the decision to go very deep and drill those narrow tunnels will ultimately be the downfall of London Underground. It means small trains, no air conditioning, narrow platforms etc. It's just not scalable and LU will forever be an uncomfortable, frustrating experience.
No there u go again far left idiot pulling out the race card whenever somone mentions immgrant its a fact there are to many immgrants in London its one of the most over Populated cities in europe and indeed the world and the underground was built i the late 18th century its very old systerm and one of the most haunted at night there have been more problems than solved ever since the flood gates were opened
more like there are too many ppl in london who dont need to be here and its putting too much strain on the underground and other public services at least in the 19th century the underground wasnt competely croweded as it is today
Compressed air? On the Metropolitan??? Who on earth did the research on that? The Metropolitan could never have worked as a pneumatic railway, that's absolute bunkum! They had specially designed steam engines that recycled most of the steam for tunnel use. It was only considered for the first deep level Tube line, the City and South London Railway.
put in "ghosts on the underground" on youtube, interesting doccumentry if you like ghosts and london underground, apprantly its the mot haunted place on earth
the LondonTube is the most haunted place in the World! I am a Londoner myself and have traveled the underground many times.
There are literally thousands of graves that have been dug up for construction of the tube...also not to mention the countless deaths (either singually or in large quantities) and suicides that have happened over the years..
apparantely the exit at bank, as you come up from the escelators, was where a Crypt was...right where people pass everyday there were bodies lying there before construction of the Underground. and the entrance to the crypt was where the ticket office is now ; ) interesting huh
well i dont believe in the supernatural, i think of the history! but i'd like to see the closed stations...good atmoshphere, if u like morbid thngs ; P
You didnt detect the irony, friend.. In England its called a 'Railway' Someone mentioned 'Railroad' which unfortunately is becoming to be used in the UK by young people.. We INVENTED the bloody thing!
PS Saw your guitar stuff , check mine out!
And I live in Scotland (Weve had a railway since 1840!) :)
In 1818, however, Brunel patented the tunneling shield, a device that made possible tunneling in safety through waterbearing strata. did not have invent it. he improved brunels version. after all greatheads version was used in 1884 60 years after brunels thames tunnel was opened.
